Stargate - Universe

Stargate - Universe

So, now that the first episode has aired, what do you think?

Other than the style (too BSG/Defying Gravity (camera shots and flashbacks) for my taste - it seems the norm these days though) I like it so far.

Good story line, good cast and characters, and a fresh new twist to the SG saga.

Although, why hasn't there been any mention of an actual FTL drive in the other series? If so many ships were sent out with these drives, it should have been noticed by either SG1 or SGA in their searches of the Ancients databases.

But overall, I am looking forward to (hopefully) several more new seasons of Stargate.

ah i see. Mk. Yeah we get the next episode December 4th and then midseries break! WEEEEEEEE. Fuck it.

I take it everyone complaining about the lack of woo adventures weren't much for BSG? Personally, I'm really liking this show. Except for a couple facepalm moments that are completely out of canon it has been pretty good. I was kinda tired of the way that SGA was stagnating at the end. "OHLOL WORMHOLE DRIVE" "shields are at 30%!" and all that kinda sci-fi fill in random line here cause I can't think of anything better crap was getting really old.

Yeah you can tell they need a better technical advisor :P. What I am yearning for is some interaction with other sentients or some kind of discovery. isn't that what the Stargate Franchise is about? Discovery? Its always a great feeling when something brand new is explained in depth with a coherent string of events.

More then likely its the first planet theyve come across with that amount of power fed into the Gate without it blowing up in their faces. But just like theres thousands of Earth Like planets. Its safe to assume theres 100s if not thousands of Icarus like planets.
End of Allegiance86's quote

Well the truth of the matter is that SG, like many other Sci-Fi shows, never really fessed up to the fact of how big a galaxy is.  I think Star Trek is the only series that kinda puts the whole size of the galaxy in perspective.  Babylon 5 does a poor job of this.  Our galaxy is FKIN HUGE.

I always thought they were trying to get to the destiny to unlock the dark deep secrets of the Ancients.......the most theyve accomplished to learn is........the ship has kinos......the ship uses solar power to regenerate (literally) and that the ship isnt the first its only a data hub. But beyond that theres not much discovery, everything else has been known Ancient Knowledge since SG1 which makes it UBER old.

If Rush thinks there is something important about the destiny, then there must be. He is the equivalent of a greek prophet in classic tragedy. :D

Ha.  I don't think they did a good job on this at all.  I can live with the personal drama, and some of my favorite SG1/SGA episodes have involved no gate travel at all, but thi is going a bit too far.  I agree they should meet some sort of hostile alien, like have them enter a new galaxy or something.  I mean, we know they have guns on destiny.  LOTS of guns, so when will we get to see it firing on another ship?

Also, i think the assholes need to think REAL hard about which episodes they aired.  Time pissed me off with its cliffhanger.  And Life made me want to choke a baby...okay, maybe not, but it did piss me off...anyway...i can see how they SORT OF made it obvious what would happen, but how about devoting 10 mins of the next episode for some closure?  Not like Life had much else going on anyway...I think my favorite part was the IOA girl's visit home.\o/

Overall, i like the show, but they need to get their act together quick or the viewers will riot.  Seriously.  Maybe they could do something like finally get it over with and leave someone behind...then blow all our minds by having him/her show up a few weeks earlier with a new character from another world or something...idk.  Just a suggestion.  Not like they're doing better themselves...

Something huge needs to happen, and fast.  Even if it kills the show, they at least have to try.  Or maybe send someone from earth to the ship via a ZPM...Or find a ZPM somewhere and allow travel, like they did with Atlantis.  (Earth brings ZPM to Destiny)  But people decide to stay, then they get a REAL storyline...

Sorry...I kinda rambled on there...

Ah, but if those planets have been mined by some overdressed aliens for hundreds of years, there might not be any planets with sufficient useful elements to be considered Icarus type any more,

Not that it matters.  There's plenty galaxies besides the Milky Way.

Rather than trying to gate in or gate out from Destiny, I would have thought it would have been an idea to try and come up with a newer faster FTL drive that can catch up with Destiny eventually.  Or check that Ancient database again to see if it mentions how to get into the core systems of those old ships from way back.  Maybe there's a note from Janus that says Oh yeah my password is 'password' by the way.

Personally, I'm looking for some sort of solid & humanoid based alien in the next show.  ( S01E09 is actually what I watched.. )

Maybe the ship can spawn a holographic whore to take their minds off things?

I wasn't serious when I started that comment, but somehow it didn't seem far fetched by the time I finished typing.  I admire the constitutions of the people still watching it, but pity their mental faculties...

Why would they need holo-Chloe when they have the real thing? ;P I hate that woman.....

How the hell do you mine a planets core? Icarus didnt have special resources, It had a GIANT core that fed directly into the gate. Maybe you dont understand what fuels the Stargates...Its not COALs burning I can tell you that.

I like the fact that it is darker (like the new BSG best series ever.) So far except for the stupid camera to send back to earth scenes it is pretty good.

I do agree on that. Looks like they're abusing of that ancient toy a "little" too much.

Actully I would like to see non-humanoid aliens as the bad guys. Something or I don't know TOTALY alien. and I sure hope these aliens DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH like every other planet in 3 galaxys seem to do. I love all the SG series but this is the one thing I really hate about them.

Yeay.... derail thread much?

Why not? Besides, most of the thread is just complaining that the show isn't perfect.

It could do without the sex scenes. Other than that, I like SGU.

Actully it should keep the sex scenes and add more. Not all of us are uptight prudes

I just saw life. Did Matt kill himself at the end? It looked like he was in the broken shuttle and I coulda sworn I saw some blue gust fill it up. Hm, although this was basically the "drama" episode, it made perfect sense. The title is life, literally hinting that the episode is about life. They used country music, infamous for its retardedly depressing lyrics about how fucked some random guy's life is, and everyone is having a REALLY bad fckn day, except that one asian chick who fux everyone and is spreading the A.I.D.S....not "reading". I congratulate the team, they made their second really believabley deep character(next to Eli, because Eli is a gamer and that= instarelate), the human resources girl that works for the IOA.     She actually has a relationship with someone, that seems to run deeper than sex and fighting....unlike Col. Young(tehe, I love judging fictional characters). I think I might be the only person that watches this show and doesn't think Rush is a dick..actually I think I am the only person that watches this show . Even though this was the drama episode, and I hate teh dramas, at least it helps make the characters seem a little more believable....nobody cares about the consequences of their actions...just like real pplz!!! This has gone from a scifi with soap opera elements, to a soap opera with scifi elements. This really epitomized everything that has built up till now, and then asploded it. Hopefully the show wont stick with this crap instead of moving on to a more adventurous SGU, with aliens....and uh, guns n shit, n violence *drones off*...an' sum shootin an sum spaseshipz....
End of Circumstantial's quote

You know they could have done worst than country music, they could have used Hip Hop or Polka music (the 2 worst forms of music on the planet)

Not me I loved BSG. I think that it was the best series to date on TV. I love the dark grittiness of it.

Well, if they want to have a porn show set on a spaceship in the Stargate universe, I'm not gonna stop them, but at least stop calling it a sci-fi series...

You left out rap. Or is that even technically music?

the show is literally 95% drama 4.9% sex and .1% Scifi it doesnt have any right to claim Scifi or even SG franchise.

Hasn't it been cancelled yet? It should definitely be put out of its misery. Sci-fi should be a lot better than this.

Personally I'm enjoying the series. It has a better feel to me than the first season of SG1, buts thats just my opinion.

ime pissed me off with its cliffhanger.
End of quote

Respectully I'd like to out that Time did not end with a cliffhanger, it ended with the resolution - they just didn't spend the screen time to explain how it played out. Do we really need to see them getting to the planet a 3rd time? And then going though all the steps to the cure again?.... Sorry its a pet peeve.

Anyways, the show has a lot of potential and the writers have a good track record(not perfect, but nothing is). I'd wait until at least the 2nd season before writing it off.

1. non humanoid aliens as the main bad guys wouldnt happen simply because of cost. having puppets or cgi would be massively expensive, compared to a bunch of 'extras'

2. the producers explained why everyone speaks english, because spending 10 mins in a 50 min show learning a new language EVERY TIME they go offworld would be REALLY boring and tedious

the english thing does not bother me, the lack of a the traditions that made SG great does

I really wanted to see a Dwarf Fortress-esque story about a group of woefully unprepared people overcoming horrible initial conditions, building a new community in relative isolation, and eventually doing something crazy-awesome. Maybe if Eli runs out of people to stalk with the kino and people stop abusing the communication stones...

I keep telling myself that the first season of SG1 was similarly lackluster and artificially tarted up, but I can't help wondering if this is really the same military that had Jack so afraid of furthering his romance with Carter.

SG1 was lackluster, but it had good intentions.

SGU is just lacking, and in no way has good intentions for protecting the SG Franchise's founding ideas. Theyve thrown everything out that makes an SG show SG. They barely go off world, I get it theyre on a ship, technically their always off world. But the fact is, youve got drug addicts, sex addicts, a slut, a guy that cries about his past, a kid that is socially akward, a lesbian trying to vie for control, a scientist that doesnt want to share what hes learning, a Colonel that cant seem to concentrate on his own issues because hes too distracted by his slut of a wife, a Medic that seems to be lacking the skills to be a proper medical expert, yet shes capable of creating a vaccine?? wtf and finally a Sgt. Thats cool as shit, Sorry Greer is the only guy that makes me feel at home watching SGU is hard ass attitude reminds me of the real military. And the fact that someone onboard has enough sense to do whats needed, not whats wanted.
