[.24][Performance] Over time in the game it becomes laggy to the point where it hardly moves

The game runs completely fine for me but after about 20 mins it gets laggy, after about an hour it becomes so bad that I can barely play, so i just have to stop playing the game.

Debug.err

Have fun  :P

Ill explain a bit further, everything runs fine for about 20 turns, no lag at all, as I explore the map more and more the game bogs down while I am moving across the map the Sovereign keeps getting jumpier and jumpier until i cant even see that he has moved until the next turn when i select him using his picture to make him move again. but when I press escape the menu runs as smooth as ever, however the game is laggy.

And its not my computer, because I've acedently left elemental open when I'm playing Aion on full graphic's and Aion isn't lagging,

If you're running Aion, isn't it reasonable to assume that aion might be taking up a bit of your system.     Elemental is still plagued with memory leaks, but its reasonable that Aion would reserve enough RAM to keep itself stable.

I'm not playing Aion at the same time, I'm saying elemental was still running and I was able to play Aion regardless of Elemental running still, when I realized it was still open I task manager closed it.

So I was stating that elemental was the problem, and not anything else, furthermore I realize that Elemental has memory leaks, and if you read my Debug.err, you will Identify that. I just want to display it so that they can Identify the problem, and decrease the error's in the Beta so that I can assist in tracking error's.

I don't normally run multiple games at the same time, sometimes I will run a game in one monitor, and a Movie in the second. but not often.

I also had this lagging. Just started 0.24 the second time (the first time I had a VPU-recovery problem (never in 0.22 or 0.23), this time it ran fine). When I had 8 cities or so (all connected via roads), found 3 other Souvereigns, one of them already killed, the game became slower and slower. Sometimes when I told my Souv that he should move to a position several tiles away, he moved one tile and then forgot the target. Sometimes he just thought for 10 seconds, how he should move at all (to a tile directly beside him).

I had this problem in .23 as well as .24.  Last night it was real bad, I got an out of memory pop up and the game crashed, for what it is worth, I have 3gb of ram.

In my non-expert opinion this statement says it all:

"- game only updates sectors that have been exposed by FOW"

So, a top priority needs to be making updating more efficient so you can actually explore the map; right now the less of the map that you expose the more the game slows down.  I am also concerned with this message because I'm not sure if the unexposed world is frozen in time while you're building your kingdom... obviously this would be a gameplay issue.

I previously assumed that the lag issue was related to FOW, after discovering that control-u removed the FOW, I tried playing a game without it on.  I made it about 80 turns or so into the game, having control of 6 cities before the game crashed due to running out of memory (at time of crash the game was taking up 1.7gb of my 3gb of ram.  One thing that I didn't do in this game was build roads between my cities, to test for the influence of caravans; however the game was not as laggy as before so it may be the influence of caravans or potentially city size and activities.  At the moment, given the need for more active tracking of caravans, they are highly suspect to me.

You can play for an hour without crashing ? Lucky one ;)

Sounds like memory leakage :( Can you play windowed with your task manager open next time to see what your memory usage is at when things start feeling pokey?

Thanks!  :)

Regarding memory leakage:

In my laggy 0.24 game it used less then a gig each in physical and virtual memory. In 0.22 or 0.23 (don't know which one) I once had a game with 1.7 gig used each, but without the lagginess. Maybe it wasn't memory usage, but some threads (AI?) used too much CPU-power without leaving enough open to the other things.

What I did: Clicking next turn very fast (had just my souvereign moving around with a far away target). Maybe some algorithms which needed to be run every round couldn'T finish properly before being restarted which gave the game a hiccup?

Another Observation:

This happens only (so far) with many caravans on the road and clicking next turn before the caravans finished their move.

Yes, it's the caravans (or at least the caravans are sufficient).  I built/captured 18 towns with no roads, no lag, and good income.  Then I built roads and in a few turns had 91 caravans, horrible lag, and deeply negative income.

The memory leak bain of programmers everywhere...

pretty much whenever something runs well for a while and then gradually gets laggier & laggier it's a memory leak, I'm sure Stardock are interested in finding and squashing these ASAP.

I have the same issue.  As with the post above it occurs, or at least becomes very noticeable when you connect the cities and the caravans begin to move.  I hope the problem can be resolved without removing the caravans.  They will make the world feel much more alive and interesting.

The game does leak memory in several ways and severities (for kicks start a new game, open up the kingdom info window and spam-click the "design units" button while watching memory consumption).  Past 1GB consumption I get slowdown too.

But 10+ cities worth of caravans also cause massive slowdown for me on games where memory is pretty much fine, and also do after save/quit-program/reload which effectively "reclaims" the leaked memory.

Basically it's got tons of those caravan markers moving around at the end of every turn and it gets choppy.

Has anyone reported the caravan-slowdown issue in a separate thread? Edit: yes: https://forums.elementalgame.com/365814
