[Suggestion] raw mana shards

Now the shards seem to be aligned to an element from the beginning - earth, fire, etc.

I would like to align them while building a temple because of 2 considerations.

1) I like to play comparatively small empires on big maps. If i can choose the mana types i like i can finetune my strategy, if i am not i am forced to expand beyond the limits i intended to, only to get the mana shard i need.

2) Specialisation. Sometimes i'd like to play the Fire Mage. I want to feel fire incarnate - what use do i have for all these water mana nodes?

I'm already sort of confused, I thought the shards would give essence, not mana, so now im wondering how one gets more essence (Other than leveling/special items?). 

 

-Also as for OP idea, maybe research where you can cast a spell to change a mana shard's alignment, or somewhat easier, just change where the power is going but only get 1/2 of the normal mana from said source.

You get more essence by your sovreign leveling up. =)
