I had the same problem for a while. Not sure what I did too fix it, but I think it was my firewall that somehow messed things up.

 

Got a question from it about elemental, said yes, and everything worked fine.

Thanks for your help, It was really the problem!

 

I was sitting behind workplace firewall! I just connect via guaest account which doesn't use a proxy and now i see a corect world name and see all fractions

Ok I had the same problem as everyone above but my internet connection was down. Once my connection cmae back up the problem disappeared. So just to clarify do we have to be connected to the internet to play the game?

You must be online to start the beta. It downloads the data files from the server to make sure everyone is using the same stuff, and we can update it without needing to put a new build on Impulse (if any actual code changes though that would take a new build--this is just the data).

 

As well, update those video drivers, people! Especially the one with the 2005 drivers--the game is really struggling there as you can see in your debug, and I'm surprised it works at all.

Getting the same problem as those above ; tried updating my drivers and turning off my firewall. Anyone have any idea on where I should start to resolve this?

PAY ATTTENTION !!! That's not a true bug,  as people from stardock said before you CAN'T play Elemental when you're disconected from the internet (because it searches updates etc etc). That "bug" you posted it's the same i had when trying to play without an internet connection.

Would be great if Stardock could implement a pop up that say that you've to be connected to the net (for the beta)

Yes, unfortunately, I am connected to the internet. And, as stated above, I've also tried turning off my firewall, adding exceptions to my firewall, running a different firewall, adding exceptions to that firewall, and using two different internet connections.

If you have a DSL router, disable any software firewall (including windows one) and try (just for testing, not suggested to leave it always on) to activate the UPNP, if it needs a specific port open by chance that would open.

However maybe someone from stardock can suggesting you some port to open for elemental.

Cable router, opened litterally all ports, opened selected ports, and the other computer on my home network is capable of accessing elemental without this problem.

I myself have had the same problem and am connected to the internet, have exceptions in my firewall, ports open etc. Nothing works. Overall I just can't run the game.

The issue is being looked into, but yeah, Elemental has to be able to hit our servers to grap the necessary data files. I'll try and get CariElf in here to explain better and hopefully determine a work around.

Currently, Elemental is only making HTTP requests so it's only using ports 80 and 443.

If you are using a proxy to connect to the internet, including a program that makes you anonymous to the Internet, you will not currently be able to download the data files.  Thanks to Sebos, I was able to determine that the proxy settings were not being automatically detected, and it will simply be a matter of running a proxy config on install to allow it to do so.

I've also made a dialog that will come up and notify you if it couldn't connect for the next update.

In the meantime, check to make sure that no firewalls, spyware or anti-virus programs are trying to block Elemental.  You may want to run in a window to make sure that you're not getting a popup behind Elemental saying that the application is being blocked.

Not sure if this will help or not, but I do use Commdo Internet Security Suite (the free, bare bones version). However I have recieved no defense alerts, in the background, I've checked my logs and still nothing :(


Edit: Nevermind, relaunced it and it seems to work now :P Weird. Nothing changed on my end.

Maybe not in install. I'm using in work proxy which has 30 day password experience. Just add a network menu and a proxy box there with user and password fields. just a little soggestion from me.

One thing that I find extremely odd is that the other machine on my home network can access the beta, but that my primary machine can't ; and I've double checked the more basic things such as anti-virus, firewalls, proxy settings, permissions under firewalls, network settings, etc.

Hopefully you all can nail down a solution.
