Heroes? Quests?

Some of you may recall the old SSI Dragonlance game War of the Lance released in 1989.  It is my second favorite strategy game next to MoM.  In it, your heroes could go on quests as well as stack with your armies.  Something along these lines would be an interesting option in Elemental.

One way to implement this would be to actually remove the heroes from the game while they are questing.  This would allow your opponents to counter your quest with heroes of their own (or vice versa).  This is how War of the Lance handled it.

Another way would be to utilize actual quest destinations, i.e. "Go to X ruins" or "Kill the wandering marauders."

Of course, this wouldnever not be a focus of the game.  It would only be a small game mechanic that can be used to level up the hero units.

My aplogies if this was discussed before.

There's also Fantasy Empires, heroes would basicaly go away and either win/die/come back with nothing, etc.  This is a different era of gaming though, I think questing on the main map will be the way to go.

It would be pretty cool to have a mini rogue-like when your exploring a monster lair, give your hero a certain number of action points per turn and you can move him around to explore it. You clear it when the big beast is dead but you might be able to avoid it until your stronger and steal some treasure off another area of the lair.

This rogue-like should only be available in the single player, since it could make the turns too long, so that the other human players in an MP game would be waiting too long.

It'd be cool, but i think mini rogue-like might be a bit too much to ask. I think i would be happy with just scripted battles that have some interesting backstory to it. Maybe, like having to kill a particular boss creature. Or having to move around to deactivate some protections before you can fight the boss creature. Or creatures that spawn in if you do something stupid.

Just something so that battles have a bit more story to them. Maybe even choices, such as do you want to attack or do you want to try and persuade said boss to join you. And maybe to persuade the boss to join you, he would direct you to go to fight some other boss in another dungeon to get some magical item for him.

Agreed.  Just having the engine allow *something* will hopefully allow the mods to script some fantastic add ons, too.  Just some basic quest system that we can elaborate on would be awesome.

Considering the fact that completing the Master Quest is going to be a victory condition, I think it's pretty safe to say that there will be some basic quest system.

It's funny that you bring this up.  One of my secret hopes is that Elemental ends up an awful lot like an updated game of Fantasy Empires.  I was just about to reinstall that the other day, but Mount and Blade distracted me.*

I still remember that oh-so-annoying "Your Hero Just Died On His Quest!" scream, not because it was particularly annoying, but because it meant you had to go out and train up another guy, and start all over at 1st level ...

* Speaking of which, Mount & Blade + Wizards would be nice ...
