After getting reports from people with this problem, we discovered that SDC was actually deleting files that it shouldn't have been deleting.

We think that we have the problem fixed, so you should be able to re-install Gal Civ to get back those files that were deleted.

RoyWoo, try this:

1) Stop SDCentral
2) Delete every file under "C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\data\public\gc1"
3) Delete every file under "C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Temp\base"

For any of you who still get this problem after trying this, I've e-mailed the SDC developers so that they can look into it.

I've just had very bad experiences with the new version 1.5. The game keeps suddenly closing down with a green window. I've completely uninstalled everything from stardock drengin & re-downloaded, archived, & installed. Seemed to work for a while yesterday, but now this unexpected closing down is chronic. Tried uninstalling the game & then reinstalling from the archive I made, but stardock central doesn't show anything happening when I pick restore existing (seems like a strange way to describe reinstalling from an archive after having uninstalled the game, but that seems like the only option). Unfortunately, nothing happens.

So I have completely uninstalled everything drengin & will install the original zipped retail version. Please let me know when you've got a game that works. I just don't have time to constantly re-download the huge files involved (takes 2-3 hrs or so on broadband), because the archive feature doesn't work either.

Put me down, Brad, as very disappointed in this buggy software. I use a tiger dual athlon mp2000 motherboard & cpu's with 1 gb of ram. game is on one of my ide drives (I have two idea drives 240 gb & two scsi 36 gb). windows 2k pro. everything works on this computer except galatic civilizations. Love the game, but I want something that doesn't close down after five minutes, repeatedly.

I sure have never experienced any bugs like you are having I would look else where for the problem like video card possibly. Just a suggestion. I build computers sounds like that sort of problem to me not the game. No offense. ;p

I am facing frequent CTD since upgrading to 1.5!

I have uninstalled all then reinstalled, I have the latest version of SDC even...still no joy!

My debug file has this error several times

ASSERT ERROR in file G:\PROJECTS\pear\SOURCE\MWIN.CPP at line 397.

Is there a way for me to fix this? Uninstall then reinstall didn't work (I tried twice).

Note this is the retail version. (if that matters at all)

I don't know about recovering lost files, but if you have the game installed, you can download the 1.04 stand alone patch and use it to downgrade to that stable version. Not perfect, but it at least lets you play in the meantime.
End of quote

Did that, it keeps crashing to desktop. I think I am done with this game.

I have the same errors in my debug file and no CTD that stop me from playing, all of them I could reload no problems. Strange. :notsure:

There are files that were updated in 1.05 that might not be replaced by the 1.04 patch, so just installing 1.04 over a messed up installation of 1.05 would not necessarily work.

That assert error wouldn't be causing crashes.

If both of you will send me your debug.err and gc1.log files (gc1.log should be in stardock central's installed folder) I'll see if I can figure out what is still wrong with your installations.

All I have is debug.err. I never had SDC installed,so I never had version 1.05. I can send the debug.err file.
BTW I finally got the game to quit crashing by saving the game before I got to the point of the crash. Then changing my moves, it always crashed on an auto-pilot attack. I still don't know what caused the crash.

Thanks

I started experiencing the governor screen crash a few versions back, so I stopped playing and hoped that the next update would fix it. Instead, I found I was unable to even download the new update.
Today, I uninstalled and reinstalled GalCiv, updated to 1.05.071, then installed the BonusPak. Then I tried running the game and it crashed almost immediately.

The debug.err file ends like this:

Debug Message: Initialize Game Options.
Debug Message: Create setup screens.
*DEBUG ERROR: *** MWinEditFields::Create - Unable to load sprite book ModAbilities ***

What version of SDC are you using? If you're not using 1.01a175 build 16, you may be getting the bug where SDC was deleting files.  If SDC isn't updating on its own, you will probably need to uninstall it and re-install to make it update.  If you are using the most current build, e-mail your gc1.log file to [email protected]

I have just send my gc1.log to [email protected] becasue I was unable to update to 1.05 using 1.01a175 build 16. I have unistall SDCentral and delete the whole STARDOCK folder and reinstalled it and it is not working. I have also uninstall GC and reinatll GC. But I was back to 1.0 because SCCentral cannot update my GC to 1.05. Luckily I am able to download the 1.04 patch from the download area so I am back to 1.04 but I was on 1.04a before I uninstall GC.

Can you guys pls put the latest patch in the download area in case SDCentral don't work so we can still get it ?

Please HELP. >:(

:notsure: uh... I'm new and wandered in here because I'm having some problems and I see that I'm not the only one.

I'm still trying to get the program all downloaded and running. I can't find any information on archiving or do I know if I'm following any proper steps.

I had it all going on and then I had to reformat my hard drive and start over. I accidentally cut myself off while trying to get the humungus multimedia file and I can't download it at all, as it looks like it was already done, but when I click to install, the game runs and there is no music or opening movie. I've clicked every tool thingy and I get no indication that I even have anything archived.

Now I see there may be a glitch in a recent version.

What is the shortest route for me now, deleting all Stardock files and start over? Is there more than one version of Stardock Central? I get a not-logged-in message now and then, but the status bar shows I'm logged in and I am greeted properly if I move around the sites attached to the browser...

I'm confused... only slightly more than usual...

>:( My G.C. game crashes even after uninstall/reinstalling it! I downloaded the patch, ran the game...it crashed, then uninstalled/reinstalled...again it crashed.

It crashes after clicking "play"...music runs, then it goes to the "status bar" with the desk top showing...any suggestions? Thanks,

I also have sometimes the problem, that GC crashes, but just in the late game.
(I loaded the game on an other machine, and it crashed on it too.)

After reloading I always made the same moves with my ships, made the same changes on the planets etc., and I had the crash again and again. But when I just pushed end turn, everything went ok!! And then I could make the changes that I wanted a turn before, and still no crash:)

I'm having the same crash issues. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game twice and it crashes in the same place. If I make no moves in that round, it'll crash during the next round. Is there any fix for this in the works? Should I send in files to be looked at and if so which ones? deburr.err and gc1.log? At this point the game is pretty much unplayable for me, and just when I started to push the Drengin back, too! :sniff!:

karmegeddon: try deleting the files from stardock central's temp folder and see if it will let you download the multimedia fresh.

hcso: Are you running it from the CD? Do you see the intro movies at all?

LanVik: e-mail the game to me, both the .sav file and the corresponding folder.  [email protected]

Yang: if it's a save game, e-mail it to me (see my response to LanVik).  Otherwise, send me debug.err, gc1.log.

Uh.... I'm not quite getting this, still...

Stardock Central shows nothing in the "archived" box or in the "backup" file folder.

multimedia is listed in the "installed" folder, but I'm not getting any...

Before I had to clear my hard drive and start over, the game was operating fine, but now my luck has run out.

I'm not clear as to how many options for downloading through Stardock Central exist: downloading, downloading and archiving..."install"...

and twice after a huge download of many many hours, I was asked to chose where to put the files and I did not understand the decision, so I just chose what was showing. I never guess right on operating system or program decisions.

So, are you saying to get rid of all "multimedia" stuff and download it again? It's in the registry and it looks like it is there, but it's not working... :notsure:
