Personalize the world

What imho many strategic games lack is the feeling you actually change the world you play in, that its a live world.

I think i read there will be some cool graphic effects on the map, wich is great.

I was thinking about more of those  tiny cool touches that were sometimes present in galciv 2 for example on the tab of the planet you could read a short history of the planet including the time you conquered it (your input)  or reading the people opinions about you.Even at this very basic and rudimentary level It is really cool for me , i still read it from time to time when playing.

How about some  rumors about the last greatest battle in the game? Or a  great new city that aplayer has developed?Or a particulary great victory?

On a more work demanding side it would be so cool for example for some time to have big battle sites marked with some reamins and for example some undead raising from it , making the place haunted.

Oh, yes: an evolving map. TRhe only reason not to put that in is because of the dev time, but it wouldn't take that much, and if they tried to pull a "no time" I would see it as an excuse or lack of imagination.

An evolving world with little tidbits of information like rumor, people's opinions, descriptions and that kind of stuff would be great. Much of it wouldn't be functional, but it would definitely make the world feel more alive. Things that do change the actual world would be great, too - huge battles, particularly where lots of magic was used, could gain some sort of importance. How such an area might change as a result of such a battle might depend on the nature of the battle, who won and lost, how many people died, how much magic was used of what types, etc.

Some major things that other civ's have accomplished would probably be noteworthy as welll.  For example some city gaining the help of a dragon probably wouldn't stay quiet for long.  Would also be cool if you could spread rumors either with spies or something.

Posit it here.

Oh! Yeah. Great battles could leave landmarks. Destroyed cities could become ruins which could house monsters and treasure (related to what the city was) and also could be cleared out and reinhabited.

"evolving map" sums it up nicely

That's a really cool idea. My only worry is that if they did impliment a system like that, how diverse could it be? If a giant battle leaves humps in the earth where there are mass graves, or all the area becomes fertile because of all the bodies (or possibly the other route and becomes more desolate or "evil"). While huge magic battles cause some other effect.

In theory I'm entirely for it, I think it would be an amazing game mechanic. I'm just worried that if it wasn't diverse enough it would only be interesting the first dozen times or so it happend...That being said, I'd still love to see it those first dozen times.

I could swear there was an entire old thread (like maybe from last year) about options for players to name stuff on the map. But all I could find with some quick digging around is that the subject came up in an April dev journal from Brad on why the game deserves a 3D level below the cloth map.

Anyhow, I still definitely like the general idea of landmark names somehow drawing from the event log for an individual game. Honorifics for champions using a similar mechanic would be neat also.

It does make me wonder how often you can change the names for certain things.  in single player, I see no problem, but I can imagine it could become confusing pretty quickly if you constantly rename your towns and heroes.   (or rename other people's towns)    I'd be  interesting in finding a system that works though (even if its just 'name the hero on hire).  The benifit of adding titles midgame is if you have that 'lucky bastard' hero that seems to somehow not-die against a dragon or something to that extent, you can name his as such.

Goodmorning all,

One option might be that diffrent factions give things differnt names,  If you choose to change the name of your town, then you would see the new name and they would see the old name,  Over time they would eventually see the new name, and then eventually only see the new name,  but the change would not be immideate, If you trade with the faction, or have lots of diplomatic contact thier names would be addpoted more quickly,  if not you would keep the old names for much longer.

since names don't change instantly, you don't have to worry about confusing friends.

Maybe not in multiplayer, but let the player name landmarks (mountain ranges, forests etc.) as well as heroes and towns (optional, of course). Even better would be forests and mountains begin nameless and get a name after something important happens there, but this might be too much work for the devs. Enemy towns should be re-namable if you want as well. I think titles are something the game should give, it makes them feel more authentic. And of course you can rack up multiple titles and choose the one you like to be more prominent. They would be simple like "dragonslayer" for killing a dragon, "unburnt" for surviving a dragon's breath, "ruthless" for executing POWs, "night sword" for fighting at night... there are hundereds of possibilites.

This seems like it would dovetail nicely with the "acheivements" system: names are great for that sort of thing.

I have a related question to titles: do heroes and other characters age in Elemental or is it more game-y than sim-y?

on heroes of might and magic they had an in game month cycle... so events could be triggered on a calendar basis.

this could be dynamic to some extent do a city could celebrate (or riot) on a staple date that represents the time it was conquered last or whatever.

EXCELENT Idea.

Not to beat a drum here, but, on one of the Total War games on the Map after a Great battle there would some times be a small marker saying who fought there and who won. Having undead rise from the battlefield would be a killer idea. Hell yeah!!!
