Elemental and Windows Seven

I don't know if I'm in the alpha group (or not, as the case may be), so I could be about a month early for worrying about this...

But does anyone know if Elemental is supposed to play nice with windows 7?  I'd hate to have to turn around on launch day and have to reinstall Vista just because Elemental and Windows 7 don't play nice!  (Either that, or maybe I'll be lucky and I'll be testing in on the OS they don't have very many people to test with... :D )

takes another long look at the machine whit Win7 beta installed.. ;)

I run windows 7 on my computer because it was stupidly shipped with a 32bit vista and I didn't want to buy another vista...:P

windows 7 seems to have about the same compatibility as windows vista.  Not to mention Brad Wardell really likes 7, so I almost expect it will be more compatible with windows 7 than other OS (for example, 64-bit XP might have trouble that 64-bit win 7 avoids)

I'd be pretty shocked if it doesn't work in Windows 7, yeah.

The majority of information I've heard on Windows 7 has been good news, unlike the Windows Vista.  I will most likely setup one or more of my systems to triple boot to include Windows 7 sometime this year.

ROFL! I was thinking the same thing! :digichet:

I'm under the impression it was pretty much designed for Win7. For what it is worth, If I'm in the alpha I'll let you know if it works well given I already use Win7.

They said months ago that it would be no problem.

windows 7 = vista that works. So why would this game not work on windows 7?

Yes I have dual boot but nothing I've tried so far that works with Vista has failed to work with Windows 7 beta, it is Vista with much improved memory management and a couple of nice added features to all intents.

I understand that there was a list of 100+ people for the alpha sitting on zoomba's desk on friday.  (or was it thursday)  either case, it was before this post.  So it couldn't be a play for an alpha spot (at least not a very good one since they are a few days late :P )

but yeah, I'm in the same boat as spartan, I use win 7 64-bit already, so if I get into the alpha it should be working by beta.

But, neither I nor Spartan will actually  be allowed to let you know if it works well, because its confirmed there is an NDA, and once we (or anybody else other than the devs) is in the alpha, we will not be allowed to let others know how its running (or even that we're under NDA, which I guess means that once somebody has signed the NDA he or she won't be able to say "yes, I'm in the alpha")

I can talk about the NDA all I want right now, since I'm not under it nor actually have access to it (I heard this from an IRC chat with the devs, in case somebody wonders.) But be aware that anybody actually in the alpha won't be able to say anything about it.

No, transparent would be me throwing in mentions of all the wonderful things I've done in previous betas, like Sins of a Solar Empire.  Transparent would be me pointing out my name in the Sins of a Solar Empire manual.  Transparent would be me ringing up every single contact I have in SD to see if I can't convince them to get me in...

Transparent is the one thing I'm not.

Didn't Annatar have a dev chat earlier where it said there wouldn't be an NDA? I wonder what changed.

You're right. You're more than transparent, you're invisible!

When did this happen? I hope that it isn't one of those legal thingies you can't sign if you're a minor.....

In any event, just as long as there are no compatibility issues with Windoes XP, I imagine I'll do fine...

it happened friday.  (my finding out about it, not any signing or anything like that)  anyway, I had hoped there wouldn't be an NDA just so I could express my excitement for the game with information from the alpha included.   But it was confirmed in the IRC chat that there a legal thingy.  However, about minors signing it?   I think the laws surrounding that change from place to place.   I know in some states of the US you only have to be 13 to sign your life away, and I'm not sure to what maximum that carries.  I wish I knew the complications to which that carries, because that would be a pretty "BALLS!" reason for you not to be included.

I remembered hearing that there wasn't going to be an NDA, then I heard there was, then wasn't and it kinda went back in forth.  I recall when I heard it originally the words "up in the air" were used at some point.   So I'm not sure if they just changed their minds or Annatar got an answer before a confirmation was made or what.   Either case, Yarlen said that 100 NDA e-mails were being sent out next week (or I guess this week, since its now sunday)

Like any legal issues, his one you cannot sign if you are a minor.

Well, I know the age cut for the forums is 13, and it seems like the two would be related..... wonder how they try to avoid people just lying about their ages........

The forums age is 13 because of a specific law about people under 13, which I think was actually killed by the supreme court anyway. It's not the same as the age of signing a contract.

An NDA is a legal contract and if you're a minor, it'd take special accomodations to do it. For legal simplicity, is is likely that if you did get picked the offer may simply be withdrawn. It's hard to say exactly how that might go.

(or even that we're under NDA, which I guess means that once somebody has signed the NDA he or she won't be able to say "yes, I'm in the alpha")

Correct.

For the forums, we can't, however if we do become aware of someone being here in violation of COPPA, they will be summarily banned. For NDAs, you'd be legally liable, though.

Wow a bit touchy about my joke, aren;t we? It sounds like with your "resume" that you are a shoo in anyway, so no reason to get your back up, friend. (BTW that's what the little smiley with the thumbs up was meant to convey - that I was joking/mock admiring your "play". Sheesh.)

To be fair, though, we haven't really discussed the Alpha. And for what it's worth, it's been said (in the chat) that the NDA is only for the Alpha and for a possible Gamma - not for the Beta.

He is correct to the best of my knowledge. Then we must consider the new development plan. So I would take any prior information with a grain of salt right now until SD makes an official post about it.

The general beta won't have an NDA. However the alpha will and any other "special" testing phases (which may or may not involve the same group) most likely will.
