SSD demo – crazy performance

This is my ThinkPad T400 laptop with an Intel 160GB solid date drive.

The solid state drive combined with a 64-bit OS with lots of memory will beat out processor speed in most daily tasks every time.

God I hope those come down in price soon.  :dur:

All of the demos I've seen have been crazy fast with SSD's.

Okay, so lets go to web and see what solid state drives is all about.  I have a quad core CPU, Vista 64 bit with 8GB of memory, hmmm.

Seconded. When I was looking at buying a new laptop a couple months ago, it was something like $1000 extra for a 70 GB SSD, or $100 for 320 GB regular drive.

It's too bad that won't speed up my internet connection, though. Then I'd maybe consider it worth it.

I'm poor.  I demand Stardock buy me stuff.

SSD's are mainly used for OS drive since it is not really worth your money to put all your data on SSD's

A 32 GB is only around $100 these days

And then get two 1TB's in raid for the rest of your data and you are good to go =)

I guess that depends on what "daily" tasks are. Loading programs assuming they are installed on the SSD, yes. But realistically, how much time do people spend waiting for programs to load oppose to actually using the programs?

SSD is great, but honestly, I prolly spend less than 1% of my computer time waiting for stuff to laod, the other 99%, I spend actually doing something. The only exception is maybe the internet, but I guess I have to wait for the US to force internet companies to stop screwing their customers. I wish we had fast internet like other countries, damn US internet with low speeds and bandwidth caps!

It's not just waiting for stuff to load, it's everything from the time it takes to come out of suspend to boot time to doing basic shell operations (right clicking and choosing a new something) to a zillion other things.

The hard drive crunches all the time in Windows. Not anymore.

Whoa, here in Oz, the best price I could find on a 120gb SSD is AUD $435.00 for an OCZ V2 SATA 2.5, or $487.00 for a OCZ 120gb SATA II 2.5.  Until all SD apps support access to skins on a storage drive/partition other than the OS drive, the minimum sized SSD would have to be 120gb, to provide enough room for skins and apps, etc,

Alternatively, a 250 + SSD, which surely would accomodate the lot, is upwards 0f AUD $922.00, usually around the grand + mark. Would be nice, but that's some pretty expensive hardware and but a far-away dream.

Maybe in the next lifetime. :S

Wow... sounds like you need to move... to the USA or Canada, lol. Stuff is much more reasonably priced here.

Yeah, even when you take into consideration the AUD - USD echange rate, currently at 79c in the US $.  I've been saying for ages that we pay far too much for PC related items here in Oz. That's largely due to importer/supplier excess profiteering... for example, instantly hiking up prices on old stock when the Oz dollar falls against the greenback, and being rather tardy to pass on the savings on new stock purchased at a lower price when the AUD improves.

It stinks, and because of the GST (Good and Services Tax), the government will do nothing about price control to help ease the burden... the bigger the retail price the bigger their chop @ 10c in the dollar on every dollar spent.  I guess we're just going to have to tolerate/grin and bear it....

.... besides, I dunno that I wanna move! It'd mean having to live with foreigners. :-" :w00t: :X

The demo was you loading word... fast... uh...

But seriously, SSD are pretty nice for the laptop community,  I'm wondering if/when they are cool on the desktop side.  I am a huge hardware fan, though.... guess I'll have to read up... no moving parts, so I wonder how that compares to my 10,000 rpm veliociraptor.  If better, SIGN ME UP!

Yup! Replaced my velociraptor with a SSD, only to later swap back agan *sadfays*.  Turns out I jumped on the bandwagon too early and got one of the OCZ SSD's with the crappy controller.  Whilst the performance and load times were blitzin', the stutters I got at seemingly random intervals were too irritating for me to bare.  Still! It serves happily as my game install drive so I at least get good game loadtimes from it :)

Aw man that sucks :(. is the OCZ one that bad and stutters?

I got the " Intel X25-M 80GB SSD"

I would suggest getting that one (or if you can afford it) get the 160GB version from Intel on the hard-drive. I plan on getting another 80GB one soon and slapping them in RAID ^_^.

I can't afford another one yet :(  Technically theres nothing defective with the drive, a whole first wave of SSD's had the same issues, it was just a poor controller.  The OCZ core, and core2 series have the problem but their later drives all have a new controller and propper cache.

Id love a newer one, especially one of the intel drives.  Perhaps in a couple of months when win7 comes out!

Still can't beat a Mac running Snow Leopard Brad. |-)
