Essence == Primal

Anyone else read 'The Primal Order' series of books?

Hey all,

   Has anyone else read 'The Primal Order' series of books?  A lot of the discussions about Essence reminds me of the conversations my gaming group has after I picked these books up.

   'The Primal Order' concept of Primal was that everything we think of as reality is just a byproduct of Primal.  Souls, Deities, and planes of existence are made up of Primal.  Primal was broken down into two forms, Primal Base and Primal Flux.  Primal Base was stable and generated Primal Flux which was unstable (lasted 24 hours).  Other then this they are the same.  Primal Base grows at a very slow rate (1% a year IIRC).  Primal Flux could be gained via worship, control of Planes of existence, support from another being that has access to Primal Flux.

   Primal could be used to enhance spells, create 'objects' of true permanence (Artifacts or new races), or alter 'reality'.

I haven't read the series, but I just looked it up on RPG.net  and it sounds like it fits very well in what the devs seem to be going for! I especially like how the "gods", in our case the channelers, are able to elevate mortals to godling status (the first of six levels), and then that former mortal has to ascend the ladder to become more powerful. I especially liked this line from the site:

"A recently-ascended mortal starts out as a godling. He can smite any lesser creature with ease, but given his limited amount of primal energy, even mortals could overwhelm him with sheer numbers..."

I think that channelers should be considered gods on a mortal realm, capable of shifting even the way the world works. And I also like the idea of gaining essence through worship or other similar means. I could also imagine creatures in the world, such as dragons, possessing large amounts of essence that are wildly uncontrollable based on their current disposition

haven't read it....   huh, certainly sounds strange.    I know I've never heard of it.

It sounds a bit more like the power you get in black and white, and a bit less how I imagine essence.   I don't expect essence to be gained by worship for one.     And what do you mean "another being that has access to primal flux"?

I think it means you can give your store of primal-flux away to someone else.
