Too many hobbies, too little time (rambling)

Life has been pretty interesting these past few months.

Besides the Demigod melodrama of having to basically assign my guys to take over Demigod’s multiplayer connectivity and stay there with them into the wee hours, I’m supposed to deliver a manuscript to a major publisher for a fantasy novel by the end of June.  I’m hoping to get an extension until the end of July.

Swarms

On Friday, one of my bee hives swarmed. I’d never seen that before.  Me and my friend Phil tried to get them but they took off before I could go into the Stardock storage area to pick up some bee hive nucs.

On Saturday, I spent part of the day playing Demigod online.  I’m still pretty dissatisfied with v1.0.  I don’t trust the stats yet.  I look forward to v1.01 being out there so that I can play a bit more competitively.  I’m still working with my friends at GPG to make it so that if someone quits, their Demigod is gone and not replaced with a bot.  If people quit, they should be gone. AI should only take over if someone loses their connection for some reason.

Trees and Demigods

On Sunday, some of the guys  wanted to come in to work on code that we could insert into Demigod to make it smarter on handling proxies but I had to forbid anyone from coming to work.  One of the problems of working crazy hours is that it can become addictive.  And at this point, the only people who have connection issues with Demigod either have crappy ISPs or crappy routers (or even more commonly, can’t be bothered to turn off fort Knox level firewalls).  The proxies are taking care of them but the guys need to take a day off.

I spent Sunday getting more up to speed on a new weird hobby (because bee keeping isn’t weird enough I guess) and that is forestry.  I have a property with 13 acres of woods on it and there’s a lot of trees on it.  There’s various types of apple trees, yellow poplar, walnut trees, maple trees, and a number of fairly rare trees that certainly don’t seem very impressive but my Forestry friend from the university was very excited about.  It’s going to cost an arm and a leg to rehabilitate those trees though.  But I think in the long term it’ll be worth it (well not financially but for posterity).

I researched how to try to catch some of the swarms and found out that Lemongrass Essential Oil 2 dram in a box will help. We’ll see. I ordered some and maybe I’ll pick up some bee swarms. I also went ahead and bought a bee keeping veil for my son since social services says it’s “cruel” for me to have one for myself while my son gets stung when he’s helping me at the hives. I try to explain I’m building character or something.

Power tools and police scanners

On Monday I started reading up on power tools. Now, I can’t build anything. When I’ve leveled up in life, I put all my points into increasing my nerd skills. So I’m a level 20 hacker, coder, spread sheet jockey, economic analyst, and flame war artist.  But I have no clue how to use the whacker to put spikes into wood.  I did some research on electric saws, drills, and nail guns. I didn’t buy any since I should probably up my insurance first.

Also today I ordered a Uniden BCD396XT Handheld TrunkTracker IV Digital Police Scanner as I’m ridiculously nosey and not brave enough yet to get into ham radios. This is what happens if you spend too much time on the Internet. Everyone you know is someone online and so human voices have to come through an expensive box. Plus, having gotten multiple tickets on I-75 up near West Branch I’ve gotten a bit fed up with the speed traps.  Yes, I could just go the speed limit but it’s straight, open roads, middle of the day no cars, and the 911 Turbo forces me to do things against my will.

Coding is life

When the book is written, I mean to get back to C#. But first I have to pick up and learn Python since I promised the team and fans that I would put a serious effort to let people mod my future AIs and since Elemental supports Python this is a good opportunity.  I’d love to also start modding Demigod, I don’t know LUA but it can’t be very hard.  I think its AI could be improved just by having more awareness of damage per second it’s taking and a few triggers to know when to flee to a safe spot to recover.

If I had more time, I’d like to learn how to make Demigods and Demigod maps. While the game’s launch was a total disaster, I feel pretty confident that its sheer excellence (Dota zealots not withstanding) will ensure it has a long-term audience that will only grow as long as we keep supporting it.

Hiring

This is the time of year we usually hire people. Michigan is at its best in the early Spring. But with all the crazy hours lately, we haven’t had a chance to hire.  A missed opportunity.  We’ll have to revisit it later in the Summer and see where we’re at.  There’s so much to do.

Outsource some of your work to a 35 year old college student in Oregon, not the beekeeping though. Keep your bees in Michigan or I will Africanize them and send them back.

I have been a scanner freak for a long time.  I listen to it all day while I work.

Two things you will have to get familiar with if you are not already.

  • 10-codes
  • Police dispatch codes

Otherwise, you really won't know what they are saying.

Here are some resources you might find useful.

I grew up in Southern California and had a friend with a dad that managed a 400 unit apartment complex. He claimed that he would listen to the scanner all night because it allowed him to find out when the cops were on thier way to his apartments as soon as there was trouble, instead of just finding out after the fact. In the five or so years I knew him he had two shootings, a couple stabbings, and many, many domestic disputes (among othere things).

It wasn't until years later I found out my friends dad sold pot out of his apartment, after being arrested for it, and had the scanner for other personal reasons. In the end I guess his police scanner failed him.

My old man was a Ham.... after 6 years of Radio ops in WW2 [intercepting German comms]...and 30 years in Fligth Service [Civil Aviation] .... he heard about Chernobyl direct....before the news was 'leaked'.

He never got into 'voice' ..... it was all Morse for him...;)

If you're looking for a decent Power Tool ....Milwaukee makes some good ones..... but be ready to pay a bit....they can be 10 times dearer than the no-name 'cheap shit' from China...;)

Who goes the speed limit in Michigan? If you're not going 5-10 mph over it, you're just not going fast enough!

I'm very glad to hear Stardock is going to be hiring again.  :)

Liar!  You know as well as the rest of us.... you got a lot of grunt under the hood and you just can't resist putting pedal to the metal to see how fast it'll go.

And don't try to tell me any different!

I was your age once, and when I had my K 1 750 Honda with a 908cc kit, dual Webers and 6 speed box, I cranked it up whenever there was a bit of road in front of me.... top end was 156mph +.

As for getting your son a beekeeping hood.... wouldn't a scary halloween mask be cheaper, and probably just as effective. :-"

I read somewhere that Michigan is in the top 10 highest state with unemployment.  It should be easy to hirer more people.

Just because there are more unemployed, does not mean there are lots of those that qualify for the open position. It's actually harder these days to find a qualifed person, because you have to wade through all of those applications from people who are not.

Well, despite the fact that I am one of those people, who have by an arbitary definition a bad ISP or router (though neither is the German Telekom a bad ISP, nor are their routers crap - if they were, I wouldn't be able to play other games online, or would I?).

What kind of novel did you write? Anything out of the ordinary, or just the usual fantasy fare?

Tsk tsk tsk, Frogboy. No one forces you to surpase the speed limit. You are the one to blame so stop blaming others to justify your actions!}:)

I'll relocate to Michigan and give you 80 hrs a week in exchange for security. :)

Wow... I thought I tried to do a lot (though, I tend to fail to finish anything =/)... but jeez, bee-keeping? I don't think anyone has gotten anything on that.

Doesn't help that I tend to get distracted easily by the likes of Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Heroes, etc...

I can completely relate with the power tools thing. While, I'm fairly decent with the tactile trades, I never really got into it as I would have liked to (money ><). But none-the-less, every so often I get the overwhelming urge to build a new desk, modify my PC case, etc... and then I spend hours upon hours simply looking at tools, with the end result of me never taking the next step always being the same.

Yeah, I have too many hobbies as well.  I just started to do some iPhone Programming in my spare time (which isn't much with working 60+ hours a week, wedding planning ect).  Creating my first game outside of Flash/HTML.  Oh, and I need to get back to learning German.

My company is based in Pontiac, MI and actually we are about to hire a couple of people, after a couple of lousy months its a good change.

Those DOTA zealots, dispite being rude, angst filled, and stubborn tend to have a good idea what they are talking about when it comes to MOBAs. I don't think there are any gamers more obsessive than DOTA players. I, myself, am a Darkness and Light (DAL) zealot. So I automatically clash with DOTA players, angrily shaking my fist at the sky saying "Darkness and Light was better you fools! If only it had been released!".

Why not kill two birds with one stone. DOTA has a big, very supportive community, win them over and everything will fall into place. Also, you're looking to hire. Simple solution, hire icefrog. There's a recent rift between icefrog and Pendragon, so seems like it'd be the perfect time. Also, Demigod has League of Legends coming around the corner, as far as competition goes. And, well, LoL has Guinsoo.

Besides! I mean... he's an ice frog... you're a frog boy... seems like a match made in heaven.

I thank you for this little window into your life. I find it very interesting.

It is cruel to have a veil for you and none for your kid. Pretty nasty LOL

I have three young kids myself and a new house and now we just bought a camper. Last week-end we just replaced the 21' pool in the yard. Winter just killed the old one. Now we are preparing the camper for the vacation time. Then there's the house to finish painting and then the grass to cut and then there's...  AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!

It's just crazy! So I know what you mean!

The veil thing reminds me of picking rocks on the farm with my Dad. My brothers and I would sit in the bucket while my Dad would drive the tractor around. When he stopped the tractor it was our queue to pick up all the rocks in the nearby area that were bigger than a fist. This gets a little tiring after awhile. When we started to complain we were tired my Dad would say, and I quote: "So?". ;P

The really funny thing is he had two perfectly good rock picking machines sitting in our quonset while we were doing this. ^_^

Lua is a great little language. I worked for a year on a game written mostly in Lua and grew to really love the paradigm of coding in Lua.

It's Lua by the way, not LUA. I bring it up because you've spelled it that way before. Lua isn't an acronym, it means "moon" in Portuguese :)

My dad was crueler than that!  He'd tell me I had to cut the lawns... then hand me a blunt pair of my mother's dressmaking scissors.... and a fondue fork to rake it all up.  Worse still, if he thought I had finished too early and still had time to play with my mates before dark, he'd give me a tape measure and I'd have to go back out and cut every blade of grass over 1" again. :-" :w00t:

Nah, it wasn't that bad, but dad did keep me busy a lot of the time so I wasn't on the street getting into mischief... not that it stopped me entirely.  I was a prick of a kid for pulling stunts and practical jokes... and in a village of around 600, I reckon I pretty near got all of 'em in the few spare hours of the 16 years I lived there before moving to Oz.

Sadly, these days I'm too crippled up with arthritis to get into all that stuff.... so I procrastinate and reminisce a lot... dream of the stunts I'd like to be able do.

:-"
