What are lanes exactly?

I keep hearing the term lanes... What exactly does this mean? Sorry for the noob question lol. Thanks...

Basicly, the pathways that you move along. They're present in every level except Prison, although some levels have more then others, and some levels are nothing but lanes. Movement is a huge part of Demigod, so controlling lanes is a huge deal, especially when flags and defenses are along them.
