Last evening I visited an old friend on the web. My friend's name is the Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce. The dictionary is always good for a laugh. But it also contains a wealth of social commentary. Moreover, though it was written around the turn of the century, many of the entries are appropos for today. In fact, there are many entries where you can't tell from the language, that they are almost a hundred years old.
As an experiment in blogging, I will try to include a link to the dictionary in this article. If that doesn't work, just google devil's dictionary. until then, here are a couple of examples to whet your appetite.
AIR, n. A nutritious substance supplied by a bountiful Providence for
the fattening of the poor.
ACQUAINTANCE, n. A person whom we know well enough to borrow from,
but not well enough to lend to. A degree of friendship called slight
when its object is poor or obscure, and intimate when he is rich or
famous.
