Devs check out Dominons

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominions_3

It's sort of like Elemental but board game style. Really interesting game with some similar concepts and a pretty good spell repitore/ heros can be wounded- lose eyes etc - and you can have artifcats that bring them back as liches if they die, tons of cool stuff.

That game has been brought up quite a few times on this forum. I would assume that they're familiar with it by now. Definitely a great game!

Considering Brad plugged it himself once over on GC2...

Dominions_3 has extreme gameplay depth.  The huge massive list of spells(many which are different) and huge massive list of units(many with RARE abilities/attacks)  opens an enormous amount of strategic gameplay and this doesn't even include the extra gameplay strategy depth from items, dominion preaching, +/- scales chosen, battlefield orders, hidden magic sites, etc., .

The game can be very difficult for beginners... so I advise those trying the demo to first play with only a few opponents on a large map...  this will allow you time to actually build, expand and learn the basics.  Anyone who has the patience to learn this game will keep it installed for many many years.

Read my posts in that topic. They are the gospel truth.

Wow, I just did some checking of Dominions 3 - I somehow had never heard of it. It looks like an awesome game although almost everyone warns of a steep learning curve.

I am surprised that a game over 2 years old is still selling for $50. If you guys were in my shoes (MoM was favorite game ever, planning on spending a lot of time beta testing EWOM, etc) would you still recommend getting it?

Yes- a lot of content is still being added to the game and the online community is still very strong -as you can probably tell by the number of daily posts on their forums.  You will also notice from their forums that people are still discovering new stratigies.  That says a lot about how deep the game is.

The game is definitely worth buying... and I'm very selective about the games I purchase.   Use the free demo to play a few games until you learn the basics of positioning units, expanding, forging_items and researching.  I also recommend selecting positive scales when first starting.... because death_3 and unluck_3 can be devastating unless you're prepared for their effects.  If you have the patience for the steep learning curve it will provide many years of fun.

YES.

When you kick the ai ridiculously easily, you will be able to start getting your butt kicked in MP, which forces you to think about new strategies. The game is just awesome. Given the time I spent on it, I think it's actually one of the cheaper games I bought.

I played the demo a good bit over the last weekend. I like depth, but this game has too much imho. :X

Normally I a not too demanding as far as eye candy, I was a bit let down at just how retro the graphics were. I doubt I will buy the full game, but I definitely plan on fiddling with the demo for a while. Who knows, once I really get my feet wet I could still be converted! (I do think that with the full manual, that would help a lot, there is just too much about the game that I just "don't get" yet. I did go thru the tutorial, but it seems like even the tutorial did not touch on many aspects of the game.

I would hope Stardock takes a look at the massive range of skills and abilities which exist for units and consider adding some of these into the upcoming Elemental game.   AgeofWonders:SM  also provides a large list of skills and abilities.

Yep, tis a meaty game.  I do so hope Elemental manages to trump them with a large full color and incredibly slick manual though.  I reckon there's bound to be some ideas looked into that it and other games have for Elemental.

One area where I think Dominions 3 is unsurpassed is the atmosphere, amount and quality of flavour text. Spell, item, nation, unit descriptions are just incredible.

If you're on linux, you can use strings tool to extract the text from game's executable, like this:

strings dom3 > somefilename.txt
