White-out

So I download the new version of Entrenchment - after removing the old one because it won't patch over. Niggling, but fine - I'd rather get the update with five minutes more effortless work than have the Stardock boys and girls spend time polishing up the patching when they could be tinkering with units and gameplay.

I start a new TEC game on a nice, chunky map - and the background of the loading screen is a big ol' white-out. I can see the 'me' figure in front of it, but everything else is pristine snowfield.

Okay I figure, as long as the game's alright - and it is, running smoothly as I get underway, only for me to find out a few seconds later when my first lab comes online that the research windows are irregularly whited out on a chunky white background, as is the pirate screen and a few other spots - like some sort of dysfunctional formatting error on a Word document.

Anyone else getting this, and any suggestions?

Ok...I'm a little ticked...I have the exact same issue. I cannot play the game like this..the graphics are hosed. You go into the research and everything is bright white with half of the upgrades not visible. I have updated to the latest graphics driver but it is still hosed...worked fine until I uninstalled and reinstalled for the "final" (alpha?) version.

...and now that I try again in the morning, I can't even run the program as it immediately minidumps before even getting to the opening graphic.

 Grrrrrr.

Interestingly, Entrenchment works, but has the aforementioned graphical problem with the screens and menus. Sins standard on the other hand, minidumps just like everyone else is reporting. And having looked at some of the other threads and gotten nostalgic, I can't find my copy of Nexus, dammit. I guess I'll go rooting around for Haegemonia instead. ^_^

Haegemonia?  Ha ha ha, I was their forum's administrator.  Might I know you?

@hebertdp: BTW, if you're using Windows 7 BETA, and the x64 version at that, and software doesn't work, do not blame the software.

Almost no chance at all sadly, I don't post much and haven't played online in years... but I did like Haegemonia, despite the extremely odd translations on some of the dialogue and minor logic holes that cropped up here and there. The ability to have some star systems reflect your development from earlier missions was lovely, and the research system wasn't half bad, particularly the way it rewarded datatheft and reverse-engineering.

Now if only the expansion pack had had a blasted storyline, or they'd done a sequel...

 ...

Annnnnd the new mini-patch sorts out all the problems I've experienced. You go Stardock! ^_^

 Damn, that's customer service...

Glad to hear the 'small' update fixed the display issues.

Oh, no, I don't mean a current forum administrator, I mean back... wow, it was a while ago now.  Brain-fart, I can't remember what happened with it.  Didn't the official (european) Haegemonia site shut down or something a couple years post-release?

Note I mean "Haegemonia" not "Hegemonia", I never was too involved with Dreamcatcher Games, although they did send me a free copy of the game :)

How about Haegemonia Galaxy?  Do you remember that site?  It was the game's biggest fansite, all kinds of stuff - I think the name's been "stolen" now by one of my more active members.  Can't blame him, of course, I shut the real thing down years ago.

OK, if not HG, do you recall the file called Rolling Demo Mod?  Back when Haeg was first announced they released a rolling demo, featuring a small battle around a starbase.  I made a mod for it, "RD_Mod_v1", people went nuts for it, that's actually how I first got in contact with the Digital Reality team.

The "old guard" at DR isn't there anymore for the most part now, if the company exists at all.  Gabor Feher (he was with the company as far back as Imperium Galactica 1, possibly even Reunion) doesn't work there anymore, I heard he got a job with Disney because of his CG work.

If you enjoyed Haegemonia, I highly recommend trying out Imperium Galactica 2, it was their previous game.  IMO the original Imperium Galactica was a better product, but IG2 was a lot simpler to play and had a lot of innovative features.  It's bargain-bin material now, but you should really give it a shot, it was one of the last "great" 4X games IMO.

O-R-B was also reasonably well-received, although the ships looked like washing machines with wings.  Damn but that game was ugly...

If they're the game I think they are I had both IG1 & 2 - I seem to recall that 1 started you off in a dinky ship and played you through a strategy game storyline introducing you to the different components before dropping you into a main game where it maybe turned out that you were a robot... or something.

2 was much, much prettier but had some achingly bad balance problems where the Bad People (tm) would show up with a fleet five times the size of yours no matter how much building you did, then step on you, or if you chose to play as the bad people, they'd show up with a smaller fleet but one that had mind control rays.

I think I gave it up at that point to go play Cataclysm some more, on the grounds that it was extremely pretty. Every now and then I grab a space-strategy title to try and recapture the old fun. Orion III was a total bust, as was Lost Empire. I did nab a copy of Empire of the Fading Suns a while bag, which was hexagon-tastic. The less said about Homeworld II the better.

But I can hardly wait for the Total War mob to catch up to the present day then pass us by and do something shiny with flying dreadnoughts. ^_^
