Horrible Remakes and the bad lists they make

How could the British public be so wrong!

According to a poll by DVD rental firm ScreenSelect.co.uk, the 10 worst remakes were:

1) Get Carter

2) Psycho

3) Thunderbirds

4) La Femme Nikita(Point of No Return)

5) Charlie's Angels

6) Alfie

7) Planet of the Apes

8) Starsky and Hutch

9) Cape Fear

10) Oceans Eleven.

Which makes me wonder what these people were thinking... I mean, yes, there are some HORRIFIC movies in that list, but there have been much, much worse remakes than Cape Fear and Ocean's Eleven(which I enjoy).... like Shaft for instance. Don't get me wrong, I really like Samuel L. Jackson's work, but Shaft... that's a cultural institution he sullied!

What about the Italian Job? That was a steaming pile of crap... or Lost in Space... did the viewing public have to be subjected to that? Then there were the forgettable ones... like Car 54, Where are you?, the In-Laws and the Out of Towners... which thankfully, a lot of people were able to miss.

But I think the worst remake/re-envisioning of a movie has to be the Devlin/Emmerich fiasco Godzilla... in which they both sullied both Jean Reno and a giant nuclear lizard in a 2 hour span. This crime was so great that I can think of no more fitting punishment than to stick Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich in a cell for 2 years and force them to watch this movie over and over so they understand the collective pain they caused the world.

So what were the worst remakes YOU have ever seen?

First off, I loved Charlie's Angels . . . and umm . . . I can't think of any remakes . . . hmmm . . . looking in the file cabinet in my brain under movies . . . found the manila folder labeled remakes . . . and . . . d'oh! . . . all I can find is a note saying "IOU"!

I didn't say anything bad about Charlie's Angels... that was what the English public came up with....
Does that mean you liked Charlie's Angels?
I borrowed it from my sister the other day...(having seen it before mind you)
he he he . . . I loved it. I thought it was funny and I love Drew Barrymore. I haven't seen the second one yet, though . . . I guess I should.

Without Bill Murray as Bosley, its just not the same...
Who is Bosley in the 2nd one?
Bernie Mac....

Hmmm . . . I guess it doesn't matter if he's just a voice or whatever, but there's quite a bit of difference between Bill Murray and Bernie Mac . . . though they both have the same initials!

*I can't believe I find that funny*
Well, remember its not just a voice... bosley is the liaison between Charlie and the angels, so he gets some good screen time....

This isn't to say I don't like Bernie Mac... but come on... Bill Murray is... well, Bill Murray!
D'oh! You know who I was thinking Bosley was?

*God I'm stupid*
Charlie... played as always by John Forsythe....
I do this kind of thing all the time.

*slaps forehead*

Ahhh . . . yeah, Bill Murray is the better choice for Bosley. I'm not like a super huge fan, but I dunno . . . I like Bernie Mac . . . but . . . I guess I just like to see them keep the same people. Why the switch? (I'm sure there's some totally obvious reason that I should already know . . . *sorry*)

Being a movie buff m'self I can't help put my two cents in here:

1) Get Carter
Didn't realize this was a remake. Never saw either version.

2) Psycho
Oh, good god, this was a mistake if there ever was one. Did you hear they toyed around with remaking the SEQUELS?

3) Thunderbirds
Ebbida-wha?

4) La Femme Nikita(Point of No Return)
You mean the Bridget Fonda movie? Bleargh. I didn't realize that was a remake.

5) Charlie's Angels
First one: good. Second one: not so good.

6) Alfie
Never saw it. Never saw the original.

7) Planet of the Apes
I'm not a big fan of Charlton Heston per se but there's just something about the old fashioned style of the original that sticks out to me over the Mark Wahlberg version.

8) Starsky and Hutch
I don't know. This might be kinda fun if you're drunk or try to not think of it as an actual movie, but a documentary on how these actor's lives just got flushed down the toilet.

9) Cape Fear
Didn't see the original.

10) Oceans Eleven.
Again, didn't see the original.

Oh, and another reason I replied to this thread: I loved what you said about Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin.

Hey history, if you're still around, I have a question for you.

I'm here... shoot!

OK . . . do you know anything about TVs?

When I turn on my TV the screen is white with white horizontal lines and then the TV turns itself off.

Thanks Godzilla just really pissed me off.... I'm still mad about that...

BTW, one of the great lines I heard when doing a bit of research on this was that you should NEVER, NEVER remake a movie Michael Caine starred in (The Italian Job, Get Carter and Alfie).

No, I appreciate your help. I don't know whether it's something major or something I can fix, but it's the good TV, so I'm kind of upset about it. I'm going to check that link real quick.

BTW, it's a Philips, model #32PS55 S321

You're awesome, history! That link described exactly what it's doing. It looks like something that I can *hopefully* fix. Yay!

Well, it seems possible that the model you have may have the same resistor problem as the other one, so it is probably something minor to repair. I base this on the fact that I've seen a few models from the Thomson line of electronics(RCA/GE) have similar problems across brands and model numbers.

Sorry to hijack your thread for that (as if I've never done it before!), but you helped me sooo much! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Well, I got some points out of it, so... I'm feeling ok about the hijack.... hehe...
