Unable to install/download for store-bought CD key

I tried to update my store-bought/CD install of SoaSE to the newest version after downloading Impulse. I keep getting a message when I try to verify or update "The serial number you have entered is not recognized by Impulse. Only serial numbers provided by Stardock will be accepted...." etc. I've tried uninstalling and then installing via Impulse (same message). I tried uninstalling everything and then reinstalling Impulse; same situation.

Go to the stardock website, have it email me the games I've got registered, sends me the same information I see in Impulse and have in my DVD case.

What gives?
