Does anyone remember DragonLance?

Does anyone remember DragonLance?

On the C64?

The more I think about this game the more I can see it taking the direction of the old DL titles. When I was a teen those SSI DL games had to be about my favorite titles for that platform.

There was one in particular, that I vaguely remember which used shields to represent army for movement but that is about all I can remember of it. I thought it was the best. Those titles were on the 5.25 disks. Which were a big huge step up from the tape based and cartridge games I have for my prior systems the Odyssey and the TI99a.

Anyway I did some research but could find any images that triggered any memories but I did find a sweet ass retro article. If you are interested in some all but forgotten gaming history give it a read. All you young pups out there should read it to try to develop a real appreciation for what you have now. The article can be read here.

...kids today don't know what their missing from classic RPGs and table top mini games like Battletech.  Today it's all card games or 8-10 hour video games.  Even the video games today have so little creativity and imagination anymore.  Thank GOD for Stardock because Elemental appears to be exactly what I have been missing for years now in a PC game.
End of Storm's quote

HeroScape will bring back the days of the miniatures.  Or at least I hope it does.  Did you know the game was bought by the owners of ADnD?  Their last major expansion was DnD based.  The game's a money-sink though...

And yeah I agree with other posters that DL was all about the books.  The games were fun and all, but the books were where it was at.

Where there actually games on Dragonlance?

I just read the original 3 books by Weiss and Hickman which were translated in dutch last year (25 years later??)

I actually read books 7-9 (after the cataclysm with Tasslehoff traveling forward in time) about 8 years ago wondering what they were all talking about because i never had the opportunity to read the earlier books.

The 4th book (legends) just came out and i read that too.
End of MasterKroket's quote

Those are all great books. If you're wondering how the time-line is supposed to be chronologically it goes like this:

The First 3 Chronicles:

Dragons of Autumn Twilight

Dragons of Winter Night

Dragons of Spring Dawning

Then come the "Legends", also known as the "Twins Trilogy":

Time of the Twins

War of the Twins

Test of the Twins

Then comes the 4th book in the "Chronicles" which was written years later:

Dragons of Summer Flame   ( <---- this book covers the Chaos War)

There are many other "Dragonlance" books that aren't directly connected to the story-lines of the original books but cover other characters and even later covering the stories of the children of the original "Heroes of the Lance". One of the best books I've ever read in my entire life is also a Dragonlance book. This book is the first book in the "Heroes" trilogy which is a series of stand alone books not connected to each other by their story-lines. The first book in this series is called:

The Legend of Huma

The Legend of Huma covers the second "Dragon War" that took place a couple thousand years before the events of the first books in the series which cover the "War of the Lance" which is the 3rd or 4th "Dragon War". I Highly recommend this book, even if to those who aren't Dragonlance fans and who don't want to read any of the other books. As the story has a beginning and a ending you don't need to read any other books to see what happens to the characters. The first time I read the book I was 16 or 17, around in there somewhere, and honestly...there was a part of this book where I balled like a baby. That's Never happened to me before or since while reading a book. I'm not some "weepy over emotional" type of guy. Disney movies don't make me cry, I didn't tear up when I watched "Ghost" for the first time with my girlfriend back in the day, I'm just not easily moved on a emotional level by things I see in movies or read in books, but this book....this one got to me. If you haven't read it I highly suggest you do, you won't be sorry, and I recommend that book to ANY fan of fantasy literature.

My favorite character of course is Raistlin Majere and there are a few books that spend time centering on his and Caramon's early life. This series is called the "Raistlin Chronicles" and only has two books:

The Soulforge

and

Brothers in Arms

There is a newer series called "The Lost Chronicles" which is another series of stand alone stories. The 3rd book covers Raistlin the time-line between when he disappeared from the ship using the Dragon Orb before it when into the Maelstrom and when he reappears later wearing the black robes. This book is called:

Dragons of the Hourglass Mage

I'm still reading this one atm. Honestly I'm only a few chapters in because I can rarely find the time to sit down and read anymore. I get easily distracted by the computer or TV or a game or I'm busy spending time with my wife. So far it's been really good and I'm very interested to see what Raistlin went through during that time. It's a rather big gap in his time-line and I'm surprised it's taken them so long to get around to covering it.

If you have time read the books I mentioned in the order they should go in and you'll have a much enjoyable reading experience. There's some really good stuff there and some of the best fantasy novels I've read in my entire life.

If anyone makes a mod with some method for making Draconians with Empire Death Magic on Dragon Eggs... Love.
End of quote

There will be Draconians galore in the Dragonlance Mod :)

I could make them as a stand alone unit with the requirements for making them you mentioned for use in the standard Elemental game though. All we really need atm to make that happen is the ability to get our custom model and animations into the game. Of course we also still need to do the animations and I have to finish the skin variations for the model for the different types of Draconians.

I took the same party from Champions of Krynn through to Dark Queen of Krynn on my old amiga. :)

I miss being able to do that.

I don't have friends. I've always wanted to play PnP RPG, but never had the opportunity. I've even got a whole bunch of books, from Warhammer (Fantasy & 40k both), to Vampire, to all DnD. In .pdf's, at least.
End of Luckmann's quote
I know how that goes. Real bummer.

Thanks Raven X,

Really nice to get a nice clear view of the timeline.

So far the first 3 chronicles came out in Holland and the first legends book... I also read the 3 with Mina/Gerrard etc like 50 years later when everyone but Laurana and Tasslehoff is basically dead. They came out like 8 years ago (earlier on i read loads of other books of weiss and hickman like deathgate / deathsword / one with dagnarus and the stone, not sure about english titles. So i picked up the dragonlance series thinking it was another (new) standalone series. You can guess i was rather surprised to find out it was set in a world of like a dozen other books already. Anyhow i'll pick up the books of legends as they come out. Who knows maybe they will eventually get the other books out in dutch as well... Dont mind reading in english but when i start a series in dutch i dislike to switch for collectors sake (and buying a book twice is expensive)

For the OP, a war game that used sheilds to mark the units, that sounds like War of the Lance. Fond old memories from me for that game. I know that if i call my friend this second and cry 'Searching for Naval engagements' we will both raise our shirts and expose much larger bellys like we did 20 years ago playing that game.

Other greats I seem to recall was Champions of Krynn, Deathknights of Krynn, and Darkqueen of Krynn (Taladas +100), Heroes of the Lance and Champions of the Lance (Maybe, it was the Heroes sequal to Pax tharkus, I've used the cheatbook maps for adventures in 3 Editions of D&D).

Back then games, and movies, had to have good plot because they didn't have special effects.

If anyone makes a mod with some method for making Draconians with Empire Death Magic on Dragon Eggs... Love.

My memory may be somewhat rusty and to be honest I played a lot of fantasy and "dragon" games back then both video and PnP. I remember all the names you mentioned. It just may be that I confused War of the Lance for Dragonlance. I wish I had my old C64 to verify.

BTW: I also concur the Krynn games rocked.
