OK. Call me anal but all the gradient silhouettes are driving me nuts. So I decided to make a full set avatar from the Elemental resources we currently have. Please note that Luckmann has added many more avatars to the collection. You can get them below.
NOTE: most of these were created/cropped/edited by folks other than myself, so please give credit where credit is due
Additional Note: There are many more avatars scattered throughout the forum. I just posted the majority of them here. I have tried to include suggested pages to find more avatars by the various avatars if you want to look further. You can also use the "view edits" button if you're very very brave to view all previous versions of this main thread and the images where-in.
OFFICIAL ART AVATARS:(made from the official art of Elemental)
These were formatted by Spartan (me):
The following were formatted by Luckmann: (To provide karma; you can find his posts throughout the forum, especially on page 2 and 3)
(Elemental sub-sets: still by Luckmann)
Elemental Crystal Shards:
Elemental Symbols:
More art variants of 'official art' by Luckmann link: HERE
The following were formatted by landisaurus: (to provide karma; go pretty much to any page after page 2.)
He has also volunteered to make custom edited avatars for people who ask in exchange for karma. just PM him.
(these are kinda odd-ball ones created by Landisaurus using official art.)
More are scattered throughout the forums. Pages 4-7 in particular. They feature things like 'bear cavalry units' art and 'flying shark units' and other in-forum jokes.
The following were formatted by Wintersong: (to provide karma; Wintersong's submissions are mostly on page 8+. Page 8 to spot the first main batch)
*Coming soon*
This OP is under construction. Due to some browsing issues it is being completely reformatted and built from scratch. There are other user avatars and lots of additional avatars that are supposed to be here in the OP. Jalicos (page: 15) and eplekogen (page: 5) come to mind right away. They should have avatars in this OP soon. Of course wintersong has tons of avatars scattered throughout the web. its a work in progress tracking them down and sorting into 'official art' and 'unofficial art' especially since some of the old 'official' art did not match the current style as well as others.
We are busy people though, and editing this takes more time than one might think.
Unofficial art Avatars: (also coming soon... there are tons in the "view edits" below that should be resurrected up here soon)(these were not made with Elemental Art, but were inspired by Elemental: War of Magic and/or similar works)
Here are the portraits from Master of Magic I used. I had to go make them by ripping them from the game itself, since like Luckmann, I could not find any remotely decent images. (perhaps it will help future searchers)I created Master of Magic images in jpegs, which I have named for easy reading purposes. I collect them in a zip file that can be found here

Some avatars from my collection:
(I really like the BEar Cavalry one. A pity that one of the biggest flaws of MoM is the lack of Tiger Cavalry...)
Before anyone points out the serrated borders, they are there on purpose. I like the retro (MoM) feeling they have. (you can always edit them if you hate them so much but at the same time need to use one )
Edit:
You should consider trying to feather/fade the edges of the dragon-frames, but other than the jagged edges, I absolutely love them. Great work!
You're both putting me to shame, t'be sure.
I like the bear cavalry one too!
I believe the edges to the dragon frames look fine. (perhaps I'm seeing a later version?) It makes it look pixelated, which tickles my retro-bone.
I had to tweak one of the layers that was causing trouble but no more. Changing the pixelation of those avatars would be like changing the bear cavalry one. I them as they are.
And right now I'm trying to make a new model but I fear that the Elemental symbols resist because they are not good enough and size reduction harms them too much (not like landisaurus'... or he knows better tricks which wouldn't be a surprise).
Hey, I was thinking (this is directed at Luckmann and wintersong mostly, but I guess other could get involved)
In honor of the alpha next week, I was thinking we do something special. An avatar swap! The three of us would create special avatars for each other, and we'd wear it a bit while the Alpha is going on. If only one of you is interested, we could just swap between the two of us, or if spartan (or somebody else) wants in we could mix up the exchange.
Like, I could do Luckmann's avatar, Wintersong could create one for me, and Luckmann would create one for wintersong. (I would create for luckmann a drawing or otherwise different image of his bear-o-mancer, rather than just a recoloring a blackmage sprite)
You mean in honor of the former alpha that was supposed to be next week? Frogboy said something about 30 days.
In any case, as you can correctly guess, I have no problems changing avatars so I'm not against your proposal. That said, any theme in mind? Random stuff? Sillies? It's fun and nice to be able to distract myself from the lack of alpha (beta in my case) and solid information about some topics, making avatars or anything like that. Specially being a "noob" in that topic.
yeah, whenever it is. wait, what? When did Frogboy say anything about 30 days? When/where was this? Last I saw was Boogiebac on twitter saying that its release next week depended on how much work was done "tomorrow" which in this case was now yesterday. I didn't expect to hear anything until monday (SD is usually quiet on weekends)
I wasn't sure of any particular theme. I know Luckmann likes bears. I figured we should keep something Elemental appropriate.

Elemental: June 2009 FAQ By Frogboy Posted June 18, 2009 13:08:26
Q: When will the "beta" be? A: We expect to have an alpha out in the next 30 days that will be available on a very limited basis. However, we anticipate launching the beta officially at the Penny-Arcade Expo on September 4th. This beta will be available to anyone who has pre-ordered the game. Be warned though, our betas are not fun. They're real betas which means they're incomplete and unbalanced. But through these betas, users can help mold the game by working with us online. ---------------- One doesn't contradict the other yet I would favor Frogboy's unless proven wrong (like Stardock getting ready that "limited alpha" in time for next week).

Anyways, I'm trying to increase my image editing skills (damn, I rollaly suck in the special effects deparment ) so I'll add to that to plan something for certain saurus...
Frogboy said "then next 30 days" so if they have to delay a week or two, he will not have said anything wrong. From Boogiebac's post it is evident that there are chances of delays. Frogboy's FAQ I see as the "safe" post, where Boogiebac's I see as the "inside" post. It may not be the 25th, but I kinda doubt it will be 30 days either.
Anyway, I'm not worried about it. Its the alpha, so I can't imagine it has very high standards for quality (the kind one might delay over). Boogiebac seemed ready to release back on the beta's original date. So perhaps Frogboy is generally more cautious on the subject after Demigod.
Edit: make up your mind wintersong. You've changed your avatar at least twice already today
As do they (almost) all.....
I don't think the one up there when I posted that did. It was some firy person, rather than that blue girl.
Twice? In the last 24 hours it has been 9 avatars (not counting minor edits to some).
Obviously, Scoutdog missed this one:
I absolutely love the style of them, by the way. The tiger, the fire lady and the angelbird (current one). I'm sure you've made more, but those are the ones I've seen in the last 30 minutes.
Edit: You must have quite the .psd template now. I suppose it's pretty much just "put a picture under the layers" and cut, now?
I said "almost". Although actually, only 26% of his posted avatars feature some sort of scantily-clad female. I do not, however, have any data on his personal ones, as there is no "avatar history".
I've always assumed wintersong was using tokentool!
are you telling me that isn't a set of huge white striped breasts? Look like blue nipples to me. I might see some other 'pink' nether regions too now that I'm squinting and turning me head a little.
Luckmann: The template for the original avatars is 18,9 MB and this last template (meaning I have some more for other styles) is 4,06 MB. And glad that you like the style.
Scoutdog: I'm quite sure that 26% is an on the fly number. Altough it's true I have many of them in my photobucket account... but they are tribal amazons so I expect them to be less dressed than normal for a real woman. And my "avatar history" is in my photobucket account except for my original "Brad as Rjak" avatar. I lost it. The rest are there.
KellenDunk: Altough a code monkey, sometimes my job requieres me to use Photoshop/The Gimp/Graphics Gale (useless here as no animated gifs as avatars). But first time I heard of Tokentool. (checking...)
Spoiler from the campaign leaked by... someone. New place of note:
Edit 2:
And lets not forget: woman with less clothes than recommended and a bear.
Edit 3:
*cough**cough*
I wish I had as much free time as you Wintersong. Nice job on the avatars though.
I assumed you did some good photoshop, but tokentool is used with RPTools Maptool to quickly make tokens to use in their Roleplaying map program.
I thought you made your own border and used it with tokentool, thought you put your handy borders in as the overlays and from there it's just drag picture in and done!
http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=tokentool
Luckmann: with a .psd, you just create a clipping layer, and there is no cutting required. Its "paste" and "save" Maybe "scale" to make the picture fit in the circle. I could show you if you wanted. Its really easy. (I usually do it on a higher resolution image if one is available THEN scale the image to 100x100 for the save for web) - also, would you like to be in the avatar swap?
Darkodinplus: I wish I had as much free time as wintersong. I don't have time to do avatars or troll this thread. T_T But I'm adicted
but I do! I kinda figured you'd be the one who might object, but I think you'd like what I want to make for you. I'll create a sketch and catch you on IRC sometime to see what you think before I count you out. I'm happy with just swapping with wintersong, but I have such a good idea for your avatar (which is what gave me the idea actually)
