Just got the game

Just got the game, won't actually get to use it till my birhtday on saturday :CONGRAT: . My question is what should I do first thing? What game settings etc.?

Depends how good you are at 4X games, and how avidly you've been following the development of GalCiv.

Oh -- before you play, you should probably install SDCentral and download the bonus pak and first update, just get everything up to speed.

Then, I'd start on a relatively small galaxy and with some easier AIs, just to get the hang of things. I think my fist game was a Small Galaxy, with Foolish AIs (OK, so I wanted it *real* easy) and Tight star clusters. I won that rather handily, so now I'm working up...

How is the manual, should I try going without reading it or shuould I poor through it? As far as my exp. with 4X games I bought MOO1 when it was brand new so I understand the underlining ideas behind these games.

The manual's not very good, to be frank. Give it a skim, then read the Survivor's Guide that's installed with the game. Ultimately, I suspect you'll just end up spending a lot of time in these forums.
