Eating White Castles can be dangerous...

(FROM 07.25.04)

It was a Sunday morning at about 3:30, I had just been to the west side for what ended up a no-show, so I decided to grab a bite to eat. At this hour on a Sunday morning, food choices are few and far between. McDonalds and White Castle. White Castle wins tonight. I ordered my food to go so that I could eat it in the cab. As I was eating my chicken ring sandwich with cheese and three bacon cheeseburgers, my computer popped up a fare a couple of blocks away. I heard what sounded like arguing from the gas station across the street, but it was not unusual in this area. While I continued eating, a prostitute came up and bummed a cigarette and a light from me before discussing her work schedule with her pimp. He apparently wanted her to work overtime and I think she wanted to file a grievance.
I finished eating, which if you are familiar with the size of sandwiches at White Castle, you know took no time. I pulled out into the mall parking lot and stopped at the entrance traffic light, which was in flash mode. I was turning left, which would take me in front of the gas station. As I started through the light, my foot quickly left the accelerator and hit the brake as the unmistakable sound of gunshots rang out. CLOSE. Apparently the argument at the gas station did not turn out as expected by at least one of the parties, who was firing at a Cadillac that immediately started to pull out of the station. I'm basically shitting down my leg at this point, while trying to drive and dial 9-1-1 on the cell phone.
Let me tell you - Gunshots will wake your ass up! I still don't know exactly what happened, or if anyone was hit, but it was definitely a little more excitement than I'm used to.""

am enjoying your not so conventional adventures!!

I really miss "White Castles" or "sliders" as we fondly called them.

I assume you live inthe midwest. Question, when do you sleep?

Ps. Be safe!

Thank you, glad you are enjoying this.

I am saddened to report that quantity has started to overrule quality at WC. They make 40 sandwiches at a time and keep them on the warmer griddle too long. The bottom buns are extremely soggy, and the sandwiches are not hot. However, I will remain a patron, knowing that the quality of the food will improve once they realize the error of their ways. Plus it provides some variety from McDonalds!

I do live in the midwest, in the state where the phrase "Surf the north coast" was coined...

I generally sleep in the day, but since I had the short shift tonight, I am going to sleep for about 4 hours tonight. I will have my roommate drop me off on her way to work* and get a 24-hour cab. It costs me $50 more, but I am guaranteed the cab for 24-hours and can drive it home and sleep as needed.

I have alwys been a nightowl. I absolutely loathe mornings, and afternoon to early morning is the best time for making cab money. From what I've figured out so far, the ideal shift would be 12p-4a - hopefully I can test this theory tomorrow. 16 hours is a long time in the cab, but catnaps have been known to occur. It helps that the fare computer buzzes at me when I get a call!

(* I will post soon about my roomate's job. She has a pretty cool one for the suimmer!)
