Multiple planetary defenses

I don't know it exactly. I don't build these stuff since it's too expensive. It's much better to intercept the transports before they reach their destination.

But I assume that these improvements do only affect the part of the population which lives on the planet where it is build. I would only build one on the planet with the highest population.

Does anybody know how it works?
