Influence, about 20 turns into a game

There are a variety of things that cause me to quit out of frustration from time to time... with no understanding of how/why the AI is getting ahead in a category that by my ability choice I should lead in, if not dominate.

The most aggravating one (today, no telling about tomorrow) is the sudden spike in influence the AI civs seem to get about 20 turns in. Their influence jumps to 3-5x whatever they were at and usually soon after, a UN meeting happens. Which they win. Convincingly and conveniently.

If the civ has some awe-inspiring influence ability, I'd assume that would show up earlier and on a steadier progression, not over the space of a turn. And seeing as I can't see a way to figure out how it's happening, I'd like to know if anyone has an explanation for me. Maybe the tutorial mode could show the actions of the civs... or allow a switch for viewing doing same?

Speaking of tutorials, the tutorial mode toggle is next to worthless... RP descriptions of various objects doesn't really qualify as a tutorial, IMO. Also, the font in the d/l PDF is, at least in my case, very near unreadable; the appendicies in particular are blurred.

Influence is affected also by how many Civs you're in contact with.

Probably why their's spikes is that they're "meeting" each other.

Could you elaborate on that?

Last night, I started a game on a large map/tight clusters which started me in the lower left corner with an immense gulf of space between me and the Torian and Drengin empires (being the two I came into contact with). Both spiked immensely in influence and the sector map showed them controlling just about all the sectors between my planets and theirs, while I maintained influence solely in the sectors with colonized planets and a few immediately adjacent.

So, anyway, I'm curious about how this works - my influence doesn't seem to spike when I meet other empires, but theirs spikes when they meet me.
