Is this hard!?

Ok firstly hi everyone, I recently got this game after mastering Sid Meiers Alpha Centuari, I felt I needed a change. First off this game looks great but at the moment i'm playing against 3 'beginner' and 2 'sub normal' races and still getting beaten quite easily.

It seems no matter what I do the 2 'sub normal' races manage to create massive economy, military and influence power (all usually double mine).

I can scare them off with military at the start but they soon get the upper hand.

I'm mining resources with modules, changing spending etc...

Oh plz help me im such a noob :sniff!:

:)

You should start with Cakewalk and advanced each level slowly. This is really a must, I think, for this game. The AI is very good.

Thanks. I started with everyone as 'beginner' and won that game with a cutural conquest. When i turned up the notch to all players as 'sub normal', that was too hard, so i'm experimenting.

It seems the jump up in A-I intelligence between the two levels is quite big!

I'll carry on trying though, this game looks too good

The one tid-bit I'd add is to make sure you have some diplomacy in your intial allocation/political party. This helps greatly in getting decent/good tech trades with the minors and majors. Start with 40-50 diplomacy in total. I have found this the one greatest help to me to get over the hump. Also, if you are able to construct diplomatic transistors, never trade it away.
Good luck and welcome to GC.

Establish trade routes ASAP. One way to do this is to trade for opponents excess freighters. You can determine the freighters' locations by right clicking on their names in the trade screen. Select freighters nearest to opponents planets.

Start with a medium or smaller map. Ensure that the "Habitable Planets" setting is on "Rare". I echo Wulfer and Moser's comments on diplomacy and trade. Study what techs the AI's research (and which ones they don't). Trade your techs for theirs and/or sell them to all takers. Know the tech tree and tech costs as your researched techs can be sold to all contacted AI's and minors for mucho bcs. Volumes of good info has been written so you might want to go to the websites that have this info. Here is one with links to other good sites:

One of the biggest problems I had was scrambling around the tech tree. I basically got to a point where I had to go back and re-create the tech tree.

This might help you out:
