Tech Tree for Download

Tech Tree for Download

I wasn’t quite satisfied with the existing tech trees so I decided to make my own. All data was obtained from Javascout’s excellent database. Some of the tech tree requirements that didn’t quite make sense to me were cropped (e.g. A requires B & C, but B requires C, so I will only list A requires B). This tech tree was created in Excel with flowcharts and I took some screenshots at 50% zoom to create this composite image:

I’ve also modified the above image to display a white background for ease of printing, but it doesn’t look as good since the modification wasn’t done on the original document and I’m too lazy to go back and fix it right now. You can find that second tech tree here:

Research costs are shown in parenthesis. Core technologies are color coded to correspond with their respective areas of research, except industrial research is now orange. All social and military projects, starbase modules, trade goods, achievements, and wonders are placed in transparent boxes immediately below the technology that enables their research. Some overlapping arrows are dotted to help distinguish them from each other.

My bandwidth at GeoCities is rather limited, so please right click on the image and save it locally for repeated viewing. I’ll work on piecing together a larger tech tree if there’s any interest, but you may need some pretty high resolution to see it clearly since the full tech tree is about 2500x5000 pixels at 100% zoom. Let me know if you have any suggestions or corrections, and feel free to modify and redistribute the image as you wish. Original Excel document is available upon request. I only had MS Paint and the Windows clipboard to work with, so maybe one of you with professional software will be able to do a better job at keeping the image clear at smaller sizes.

The reason there are multiple arrows is there are multiple dependencies.
If you trade for tech you would need both techs not just the later one.

Yes, but if you need the early prereq to get the later prereq, it's a bit of a foregone conclusion that when trying to research the tech in question you'd already have the early prereq, isn't it?

I understand what you're saying, JavaScout, and technically it's more accurate, but Za's method shouldn't cause any problems, either.

Not knocking it but just giving an explanation of why it is like that.
Its just a relection of the actual data in the files.

Javascout:

Let me clarify what I meant about odd requirements, which is probably bad wording on my part. This was mainly a problem with the "Future Research Options" list, and is in no way related to the "Required Research" field on your site. Take for example, the "Dreadnought Technology", "Cloaking", and "Ranger Technology" techs:

Dreadnought Technology: Includes future research option for Cloaking and Ranger Technology.

Cloaking: Includes future research option for Ranger Technology.

Ranger Technology: Requires both Dreadnought Technology and Cloaking.

To put it simply, while I was constructing the tech tree I had to concentrate on the "Future Research Options" instead of the long lists of prerequisites so I wouldn't end up confusing myself. For the three example techs above, I would draw an arrow from Dreadnought Technology to Cloaking, then from Cloaking to Ranger Technology. The Dreadnought to Ranger Technology relation would be cut however. Hopefully this will not have any negative impact on gameplay.
