my strange lil strat

my main reason for posting.. is i just think some people might find this interesting to read.

ok i bought GC2 gold edition while being internetless..
so ive had to play with no interaction from forums or help or anything.. all hands on only experience. also i didnt bother reading the manual. lol. just kept playing games till i learned what seemed to work. (loosing badly, to loosing not as bad to actually almost winning, till i began to win)
i know im a newb... but after having internet (finally! lol)
today and reading some strats.. ive noticed what i do hasnt really been listed (i think), so if anything i felt perhaps some of you out their might get a good laugh at the very least.
if anything.. it does show how diverse this game is in how many ways you can play it. i hope that doesnt ever change or become 'nerfed' later. its what i think is fun about it.

my first several games i went mostly diplomatic/influence oriented. i stuck with that for a while. the games were long, and i usually got my behind beaten badly, until i slowly began to learn how to play the game some. after i learned the basics or what i felt 'how to play' the game i decided to change. ever since ive been playing 'this' way (ill explain in a minute).. even though im sure its not the 'best' in many peoples eyes.. its just how i enjoy playing.

in most games.. i like to 'turtle'. this means building a huge defence, walls/whatever and being able to take anything thrown at you when the battles come, and generally win by attrition until you have forces enough to wipe them out. some games do not even support this 'strategy'. most games its about who can build a blitzing force first and use it wins. Even in games like rome total war i will turtle up with just a few citys and see how i can survive, even though it makes you lose the game by not taking over most of the map in an allotted time. its about the fun right? i guesse part of me gets a little 'role playish' when i play like this. you can tell im 'older' now huh? lol.. giving away my age ewps yea.. been playing these darn things since pong.

WELL. without rambling on more, what ive come down to is this.. i dont like the idea of tradeing. i dont like freighters. i refuse to make them. however knowing that is a large part of the economy, i have had to find other ways to make my money. another thing i dont like. giving away or tradeing techs. i turn it off. lol. so nope.. no money their either.. i think of myself as the russians perhaps.. why the hell should i give away anything i earned dammit. make them learn it themselfs! i dont learn the universal translator.. why? i dont care to talk to anyone! hell with them all. lol. i just plan to kick their butt eventually anyways.. being i like to turtle (initially) the full on 'rushing planets' at onset or massive ship/fleet buildups/blitz at start is also not my style. so i dont build and research weapons and whatnot at first either. yea.. looking pretty bleak so far? it gets better. i emeditaly quit the federation thing at the start. i dont like being bossed around by others and their 'democracy' when they have higher populations my vote doesnt count anyways... so why tarrif my ways of doing things? besides.. i dont have trade routes, so who cares. thats pretty much all its good for anyways is to keep trade lanes open for you anyways. so yea.. i became a total shut in. lol.

i use a race ive created aptly named the Klingons. Homeworld Kahplah (the only klingon word i ever remembered lol.. success!).
so being the disgruntled unagreeable harsh guys they are it seemed to work well into my RP'ing. Its a good day to die!
I focused on their military on the race creation. some moral bonuses and such. a stout hearted race of people. war party. super weapon.. ive come to love spore attacks.. seems fitting. after all what they tried to do to kirk and the genesis device? lol.

ahem.

well.. after going down this road to no mans land.. and usually always being set in a corner at the start of my maps.. and ive gone from playing small maps (for learning) to giant ones now. i could care less obviously about meta scores, as ive been offline basically the while time. im not into measuring my e-peen anyways. just like to have fun.
though you would think a klingon would start with blitzs and weapons... thats not exactly what i do.
ok where does the money come from? well.. i dont do the diplomatic star voting thing tech tree obviously... i keep it so what i say goes and i dont care how many people like it. my average percetage of what the people think of me goes from 1%-40% tops. i usually keep it around 25-35%. i tax the hell out of them. i dont build any farms. building farms i found out just made ofr a lot of population that became unhappy and made me go broke later on. its better (for me) just to keep the populations at a minimum and they dont get out of hand. i also dont build any factorys. i only build stock exchanges and economic buildings.. lots and lots of them. that and mining asteroids, and what money i get from my tax'es is my income. i have to micromanage the sliders a bit during play, but it works for me.
the techs i learn is focused on starbases mostly.

initially i became obsessed with starbases. being from a old era where i played 'star fleet battles' on paper and such.. starbases were usually always things of such power and magnitude attacking one was usually suicide. also they could attack with huge massive weapons when they chose too. i found out through my first huge campaign with them on GC2 they dont attack unless you get attacked.
yes.... i had a gigantic map.. played a long time... built huge bases.. just to have them fly right past them and blow the crap out of me. ugh. lol. haha. so much for having that 'military' starbase next to my home planet! no ships or fleets make them useless. sighs... thats so wrong.. but oh well. time to improvise.

so i began to use them tactically. economy bases dont seem as useful when you have zero trade routes. military ones are useless if you dont use ships and fleets. ah.. but influence ones where somewhat usefull.

i build my starbase defences like mad. i usually only held my first 2 plantets and 1 asteroid belt consisting of 2 or 3 roids. i enehanced my minign to the max to get the max payload out of that.. hoping not to have an 'incident' from overmining like we saw on star trek. lol.

i would build one of each starbase type around my lil solar system. for some reason, the AI sees upgraded starbases and thinks your massively powerful.. even if you dont have any ships. lol. i even had some offer me money over and over not to attack them.. and im thiking.. uhm. ok. yea sure. =D *takes it*

well, once those 3 bases were all maxed out...

i then would start building constructor ships like mad. tons of them. one after another. on both planets. then when i was ready..

then it was time for the turtle to come out.

i made a host of some small defender ships while doing some shielding and weapon techs while building the force of constructors... scouted out my first most oppertune place to hit.. usually a place with 3-6 asteroids and a couple nice planets all close together.

ok its time.
then i fly in with constructors. make 2 starbases. and have a huge train of them all following each other out of my two planets to the destination point. intent? creating and buffing the thing up to max in a matter of turns. the little fleets of small ships i fly in and keep guard. i also blow up any starbases they have and sometimes when i feel really obnoxious ill blow up their mining instllations too. i get attacked of course at this point. they send out their ships. by then its usually too late. my military base is made my lil ships insanely tough. besides that, i send in another set that takes any reamining forces they didnt send out at me leaving the planets defensless. spore ships. hit both planets up. wham. all mine. have my miners already close at hand to mop up the mineing work and begin upgrades. the massive influence starbase keeps it all at bay. sometimes i dont even have to attack the second planet with spores and it is given to me due to the high influence.
this all takes a lot of money to do.. and then i have to slowly build it all up again.. to rinse and repeat at the next system. nope. i do no treatys. i accept no treatys. i will only take their free money when they offer it, however it doesnt stop me when im ready to sterylize them from exsistance. lol.

so anyways.. kind of odd way of playing huh? =D lol
i seem to think so now after reading today how other people play.
i kind of like it though. =P Especially when i kill off the Terrans. How many young Klingons dreamed of such a thing?

Kahplah!

I would suggest you re-experiment with this. A fully modded (for econ bonuses, not trade) gives one heck of a boost to production values (military and social) for all planets/mines in thier influence area.

Other than that, I like what you came up with, and yeah, the point is to have fun.

He doesn't build factories, remember? He taxes the 1@#!@# out of his population and uses the cash to buy stuff, so possibly an econ starbase won't help much. When your entire production is the colony capital, then +75% of that isn't much worth the opportunity cost

True, but he does use asteroid mining, they would boost that as well, but yeah, it might not be that big of a deal with his building style.

Kudos for coming up with a very unusual strategy. I cant see myself having much fun with it as it doesnt involve expansion and conquering other systems, but it is certainly different.

On a side note, I don't think the "turtle" strategy sounds very Klingon-like, and the Klingon word can be spelled either Qa'plah or Qah'plah, I believe. I've intended to create a Klingon custom race, but havent got around to it yet. Ever play Birth of the Federation? Klingons werent especially good in that game, but I loved to play them anyway. Ferengi & Federation were the two best affiliations in that game.

You should try the Yor if you havent already, they are very "anti-social" and have an interesting super ability

yea.. i wondered if the econ starbase helped with the mining roids income. it didnt mention it in the manual when i looked it up last night, and i was curious. the manual only mentions the trade routes and then production for those.

I am pretty sure the econ bases work on upping the production (both military and social) of any planet in thier area of influence AFTER all other bonuses are added in, which would include anything gotten from a mining base. At least I have seen it explained this way in another thread.

Hehehe. So far ive seen it written Qplah Qaplah Qahplah Kplah Kaplah and Kahplah. lol. From the language sites, though though didnt list that word, it tends to look like a Q though.
No cant say ive ever played nor heard of birth of a federation, though ive enjoyed a few trek games, most of them never were 'good enough' to keep my attention for too long before they got boreing. I had a lot of hope for legacy too, but that didnt pan out. Another game i didnt mind was X2 and X3, though it was a lot more involved with flying around places; it did have some base building and
whatnot in it. Learnign curve on that one was lil tough at first.

Ferengi. haha. yea i thought about making a race using them.. after i noticed the computer liked to use my races sometimes, i thought about making most the races i saw in trek just to add some fun to the minor races.

Well.. true about the strat or turtling some not being very Klingon.. they would def be more aggressive and not as paitient in the build up processs before the attack.. but hey.. im their leader, and im more wise than the usual Klingon, so they got to do what i tell them.. and havging that low 30ish percent apporval rating might be part of why they detest me, right? lol.. but they honor me enough to do what i tell em! that or they honor my whip! but now thati think about it, who said most of the klingon empire would ever have to have a good approval rating anyways for their leader. haha.

yea.. diplomacy.. BAH. hahaha

Hmm the yor huh.. the yor always seemed so weak to me. maybe becuase they were always right next to me and constantly begging for peace or safety.

Rimmer: No, Lister, I mean like the pyramids. How did they move such massive pieces of stone without the aid of modern technology?
Lister: They had massive whips, Rimmer. Massive, massive whips.

BotF is an older game, but defiinitely worth a look if you like Star Trek. It's a 4x turn-based game like GalCiv or Civilization, where you can play as Federation, Ferengi, Romulan, Klingon, or Cardassians. There are some really cool features, like a random event where the Borg show up. If the empires dont resist the Brog effectively, they go methodically from system to system destroying absolutely everything until nobody is left and the game ends in defeat. I played this game for a number of years.
