anyone help? getting beaten question...

Hi,

first post...

So I'm playing a Dark Avatar campaign and eventually the Torians wage war on me. I've always been fairly ahead of the research wave and my spies confirm they basically have the same things researched as me and no more.

However their ships, even their tiny ships are destroying everything of mine right out including mil starbases. They appear to be absorbing all the damage from my ships and in maybe two dozen ship / starbase battles I've lost every time and they haven't even lost a ship! Even a small ship! I redesigned my ships for heavy on the shields and variants to see if I could at least kill one or duplicate the effect of theirs but failed everytime.

Anyone have any idea what could make such tiny ships so lethal? Even to take out a lucky ranger or defensive made Large ship of mine?

thanks

Sounds like the defense bug. Intentionally build ships with the WRONG type of defense and see what happens. You should be able to stand toe-to-toe with them then.

Hi!
This sounds to me like more serious bug. If you can repeat it, zip the save game and send it to Stardock bug reports.

Well I'm not so sure it was a bug, possibly I had missed something important in my weapons lists - Like... ,'NanoRippers'!

Plus being a Noob I had mistaken groups of 3 for 'groups of 3' and not fleets and the numbers for Fleet numbers instead of how many ships in the Fleet.

Anyway, I went back to previous Save, stopped my influencing of Torrians (which bought me some time) and got busy with the shields research and pumping out ships bristling with Nano Rippers.

The Torrians got to the old 'It's economically viable to destroy you' part and it was war (again).

This time my ships held their own, sometimes a 2 ship fleet wiping out a fleet of 5 of theirs. However, they just had far too many fleets for me to win and the inevitable happened eventually.

Still I learned from it.

Also Starbases - what's the point? The only Starbase to have any effect against the Torrians was the only one that I'd maxed out the modules on. It destroyed one fleet and the second took it out. All the others got taken out without destroying anything. These are military starbases I'm talking about.

Now I'm thinking if I'd spent all that time on Fleets instead of Starbases...

Ships move. Starbases don't. Plus, you have to defend starbases, which ties down your fleets. In the early game a SB with an attack of 10 and ~40HPs can hold its own, but by late early game or mid game they die like stuck pigs. Building a worthwhile SB takes a LOT of constructors. Plus, you can upgrade ships and they can defend planets or take the war to an enemy. You get the point.

That's why it is generally better to build ships, with the possible exception of strategically placed economic starbases.
