Yet another ignorant bonuspack question

Okay... here is the scenario so far:

I don't have internet access at home and have pre-ordered GC through Amazon. To acquire the BP features i will need to bring my cd to work (where i have internet access), install the game (and stardock central?) and do an upgrade/update here and THEN transfer the complete install directory back to my home machine.

Will doing this knock out any customization that i might have edited into the version of the game on my "play/home" machine?

Also, is this a scenario that will repeat itself everytime there is a "patch" or update to the game over the next year?

Yes and no. ;)

Stardock Central itself exists as a convenience for users. It won't be "required" to get major updates to the game.

Major updates (or patches as they'r called) will be downloadable just like we do for all our software. Users will need their serial number and a valid email address and then it will send them a generated link to download it.

But initially, the BonusPak and the first GalCiv update will only be available through SDCentral since unfortunatley, we just don't have enough people to provide both methods at the same time.

Once you've created your Stardock.net account (with your serial #) you'll be able to get updates.

That said, non-SD Central based updates will be much less frequent. Or more accurately, as frequent as you see with other games. We plan to put out dozens of updates to GalCiv in the coming weeks and months. User will have the ability via SD Central to pick and choose what and when they update but they'll have that choice. Non-SD Central users will be able to download the major updates but not the incremental builds.

Let me give you a specific example:
Since we went 1.0, there have been 9 SDCentral builds. The 10th one will likely be the official 1.01 which includes BonusPak features. With SDCentral, you could have, if you chose, gotten all 10 of those updates. Without SDCentral, you'd have to wait for 1.01.

The more traditional way of getting updates should be implemented within a week of the release.

I still urge users to get SDCentral though when the time comes since it provides a convenient way of creating a Stardock.net account. Just make sure you use a valid email address.

So, in the above poster's case, he wouldn't need to install the game?

He would just:
log into site,
get the e-mail with the generated link,
download the file,
burn it to a CD and take it home,
run the file on his computer at home?

If so, why didn't you say so in the first place? ;) I think this allays a lot of the concerns people have been having in other threads...
