Questions to you fellow gamers

First of all, I just noticed the new forum and I have to say I love it. Much improvement over the old one, everything is more clear to myself now.

Now to the reason I am posting this. Being a computer gamer since the early 80s, and buying my first computer a bit later in 1986 (Atari ST), I never really cared about dedicated game consoles. Had various Atari, Commodore Amiga + computers and buying my first PC in 1994 I never considered jumping ship. Till oh, now. I am sick of Windows, with all my heart I can't stand it any more. I am sick of problems, driver issues, conflicts even the occasional incompatibility and the constant "upgrade" of the copy protection schemes that if they continue like this they will ask me for my condom's size before letting me play or install a game. I am sick of having to upgrade the PC if I want to play games that look good and not having to lower (where applicable) the graphic settings, anyway you see where I am going with this.

Now, I do not have some old PC or anything, in fact it is passing the Vista "test" with flying colours etc and I am playing all new games at 1280x1024 (monitor max res) with all details on full without complains. Still, I am sick of the whole thing. So, I am considering, very very seriously, to get a console (95% Xbox360) for all my gaming needs and when the time comes (in a couple of years), buy an Apple computer for my work etc (video editing plus a few other things).

Problem with the above I see mainly from one side, my favourite games are turn based strategy games, followed by RTS, FPS, etc

I would like any comments, suggestions on the above, thanks.

Umm, good questions, though I would urge you not to abandon PC gaming. We need you!

Tough to say on your console choices given your favorites. FPS games are probably going to be most prevalent on the Xbox 360, though the PS3 and Wii will have them too. RTS is generally not found on consoles, so I couldn't say you'll do well on any of the systems overall. The PlayStation has gotten various turn-based strategy games through the years, mostly fantasy-style.

Well, just an update...

I bought the 360. So far have 2 games for it, PGR3 and Saints Row. Great fun both of them. Stupid high prices stop me from getting more. For example, most games around here cost about 60euros each, where of course, PC games are way cheaper.

Outcome? The last few days I bought several PC games for the price of 2 xbox games. I am now thinking of getting SOTS too, I need a 4X game in space, BOTF doesn't even install on my xp2, I have some major design differences with GalCiv, and I never liked the space empires series. SOTS look good I guess.

Yarlen thank you very much for your reply. Any hint as to what games will be released soon through TG?

Working on several actually:

  • DevastationZone Troopers: Original 3rd person action game that successfully recreates that old school "new" feel, but features great 3D graphics, light-sourcing, etc.
  • eXtinction: From the same developer as DZT, this one is a shoot'em-up action platformer. Again, quite original and fresh, loads of fun.
  • Gun Metal:  A PC port of the hit Xbox game. You control a transformable mech/jet fighter and go on missions to defend your homeland and attack invading enemies. Amazing 3D graphics and very addictive. Works best with a gamepad.

How's that?
