GUNSLINGER

Passing bullet-peppered deer crossings, yields and county rd. #...
Well, it was unidentifiable,
It dawned on me,
That, at 25
I still hadn't fired a gun,
At a traffic sign, living thing, or otherwise,

But if I had to,
I'd put a gaping hole,
Through the sheet metal face of a no passing zone.

Whose business would it be where the bullet rested,
None of mine that I can think of,
It would've already hit its intended target,
Richochet victims can send their complaints to MNDOT.

There's gotta be a budget for bulletproof signage,
In the last transportation bill...somewhere,
Somewhere a reduced speed ahead cries out.

Another drive-by,
Silence pierced,
The blast of buckshot followed quickly,
Crushed Busch light cans hitting the highway.

Next time I hit county road # (unidentifiable),
I'll be armed to the teeth,
Strapped,
Packin' heat.

One eye squinted,
Thank Pawlenty for the carry and conceal,
But this shiny new masculinity is out for blood,
The last thing a highway sign ever sees.

Then it dawned on me,
That, at 25,
I'm glad I never fired a gun.
