Starship bonus

When you colonize a planet you can sometimes get a starship bonus. What is it good for?

I think it increases the attack/defense values of all ships built on that planet, but I'm not 100% sure.

Ships attack value is increased by the percentage "starship bonus" you get on the planet. Defense remains the same.
