Neutral Races.

Is there a way of playing as any of the neutral races like the Snathi, Dreadlords or Jessuins? or are they unlockable?

Best to call them "minor races" so as ot to confuse people with the whole "good / neutral / evil" thing.

As to your query, prolly a MOD is what you want. Not sure if it exists yet, though.

Make a custom race. Name it Snathi, name their homeworld Snathi. Pick whatever abilities you want. Flip through the custom portraits until you see the doomsquirel you so desire. Flip through the logos until you find the snathi logo. Viola!

You'd need a customized race file to get the same abilities as minor races.

All other minors other than the Dread Lords have +100 economics and nothing else.

The Dread Lords have +25 weapons, +25 defense, +20 military production and +25 soldiering, presumably they also have some ingame modifier that gives them tons of techs.

It seems I need to edit script files and links etc, to do this, but to go through such editing would make any metaverse score of mine unacceptable because I edited parts of the game that are meant to be default?

Create your own custom race, as Modus mentioned.
I created the a Snathi-like custom race, with Dark Lord Squeekers as emperor...oh, he was so evil!
