Beta 4A on Drengin

A new build of GalCiv beta 4 is available. Beta 4A addresses a ton of reported bugs (crashes and playability) found in beta 4.

Additionally, performance has been dramatically improved over the original beta 4.

Other changes over beta 4 include:

+ Tweaks to the technology tree to make it more balanced.

+ Changes to improvements and ships to provide a more gradual increase in techs.

+ Significant computer AI enhancements

+ Galaxy sizes much larger (gigantic now has more than twice as many sectors/stars as beta 4 originally did) -- 18x18 sectors.

+ Various game play tweaks.

+ New star base modules

+ New ship: Combat transport

The overall goal of beta 4 are was to do the following 3 things:
a) Try to address crash problems that have been reported.
b) Clean up some of the more annoying playability problems.
c) Increase performance enough to allow for larger galaxies.

Notes:
1) The details crash bug has not been fixed yet.

2) There is a glitch that causes multiple screens to compete at once to come up. Hit the Esc key and try to click on any done buttons (or where they are). This doesn't happen often but it did show up during testing.

3) While AI star base building has been improved, it still has a bug where they get stuck and pile up in certain areas.

4) There is some sort of mild leak (not a show stopper but observable) that causes the game to get somewhat slower after many hours of playing. Reloading the game solves this. It's not very noticeable but it did show up on our internal gameplay benchmarks.

Note on bug reports:

We are looking for feedback on how this build resolved the 3 aforementioned things. We didn't, for instance, put any time into correcting spelling and grammar mistakes yet.

Let us know what you think.

Brad,
I did notice that in B4 and B4A if you check the random option while creating a race, you cannot go back to any other level. This is for both the alignement and AI level.

gherardo,

In previous builds if you click on the picture of the race twice it would reset the random options back to a selectable state. Have you tried this on B4 or B4A?

here's a weird thing: I started negotiations with Yor Collective and looked at the "Diplomatic Status of Civilization", it said "At War with the Yor Collective"

how can they be at war with themselves?

everybody has been at war with the yor. It's been in the last few builds, but if the right side says attack yor then that ai isn't at war with them. If you check the diplomacy screen the at war with the yor bug is always the last line on the screen

hope this helps

and another weird thing: I was playing evil, in big galaxy, so naturally the Altarians declared war on me. But they were far away so for many turns I didn't get attacked at all. Then they come asking for peace, they want it so bad that I could also make them give me 6 technologies. It's a freebie!

Tech tree is much much better, AI is smarter, Galaxy is better laid out, end game is faster, culture rush is only half as effective as it was.

Only two real issues:

Diplomacy needs to be fleshed out

AI needs to defend against culture rush by building more starbases and hunting resources more aggressively

Jack Thanks. I'd comment it's not intuitive.
