Alexan the Beetle has the same issue. Level 3, mage, 2 spellbooks but not a single trait. He even has a weakness.
I can only assume it's intended and a (apprentice) spellbook counts as 2 traits, just like creating a Sovereign. Although he still shouldn't have a weakness, if you compare him to level 1 heroes.
