Suggestions for intersting/fun self-limitations?

So I've just won my 3rd game at Challenging/Challenging, using different races and victories, and it was kindof a cakewalk each time.

Does anyone have any suggestions for interesting/fun self-limitations, like

- No magic of any type

- no more than 1 hero per stack

- never attack anyone weaker

you get the idea - self-imposed limits that can make the game (truly) challenging, while still fun.

I always take the first generated location, some people might see that as a limitation I guess.

Not that i've tried it but what about giving the AI a 10 turn head start?  Just click next turn 10 times in a row or similar before founding your first city.

Just thinking that because from what i've seen the AI is not quite as quick of the mark as a human player.

Higher difficulty?

No Pioneer exploit, no save/load.

Only use standard Sovereigns.

No army building / no Beastlord / no Enchanters.

Create a custom Sovereign and Faction with traits you have never used before.

Quoting Fallenchar,
Create a custom Sovereign and Faction with traits you have never used before.

I like that idea.

Not so much a "limitation", but another way to more challenge without necessarily increasing the difficulty might be to play with the teams thing in the setup.  I've never tried it but I believe you can setup teams, so try taking on 3 AI's that are teamed together from the start or something similar.

Do not make a mage, work on good troops to beat the AI instead.

Thanks for the input! I already do "ironman"  and the first generted location -

I really like the idea of having no mage champions - I'll try that and see how it goes.

BTW, what's the 'pioneer exploit'?

1.) Create a custom faction with one weakness, but no traits

2.) Do not allow yourself to build a single fortress

3.) BEST: Up the difficulty!

I have an idea to create a custom sovereign using randomized rolls and playing with that

Quoting Borg999,

Try a "one city challenge".

Or the "One City of Each Type".

No, that would be too easy. Only a newbie needs that.

Quoting Ashido,

Or the "One City of Each Type".

Just to finish this off, in case anyone ever browses across this -what I wound up doing, that worked pretty well, was adopting these two simple rules:

1) no mage heroes.

2) don't take one of the 3 races that are melee-focused (Verga, Gilden, and I-forget). I wound up taking the one with the money bonus, led by General Carrodus.

Good topic. I just ended a game on large map and think that is an advantage for my play-style. So I'm going to do medium and smaller maps, NO dense monsters (as my Sov gets to much Xp), NO frequent resources nor magic shards (perhaps even the lowest settings). This will make the game more challenging for me.

And no more than one hero per army isn't a limitation in my play-style. I always do that as it gives better Xp to troops. Always 2+ heroes in an army would be a limitation in my eyes.

Regarding the Pioneer-exploit: By queuing up many Pioneers (after the thing you want to build) the city's growth-rate can increase. You can get a maximum of +3 growth from a high food surplus, but this is calculated on the current population of the city. Each Pioner in the queue will decrease the population by 30 (to cover the unit) and change the calculation of the food surplus. It doesn't work on newly founded cities, but when they get bigger and starts to slow down due to lack of food, then you can increase the growth rate using pioneer-queueing. The city cannot grow over its maximum anyhow - so you often still need to produce food-buildings to reach next city-lvl.

I've not played many games yet,

But I do not reload a save game I play it through. Always have, I like the blunders and the complications it gives me.

For now that's pretty much it for me LOL

Wish I had more time to play.

Whenever I play an Ironeer faction I do not use mounts.

No Mage heroes certainly makes it more challenging. You could try playing one of the weaker factions- Tarth seems the weakest to me by some distance.

I don't really understand why you don't up the difficulty level, to be honest. Raise the difficulty level two notches and things will definitely get harder. Civilization doesn't provide a significant challenge to a decent human player without cheats, so I don't know why people expect this game to.
