Steam downloaded it automatically for me. Have you tried just starting the game through Steam?
0.75 downloaded automatically.
I think I'm already set up to start from Steam. A transient window pops up.
What I had to do to get the 0.75 update was to completely exit from Steam and then restart it. For the 0.8 update, it started as soon as I quit LH.

That's the only way I know what the version is.

I verified the cache to force an update

maybe LH didn't shut down properly, that's a known bug.
Yes, and it also helps to have automatic updates turned on.
I walked in to Valve's HQ and kicked my update gremlin in his tiny little ball sac.
The game updated forthwith.
Sounds like you edited your core files!
Go to properties, validate files and backup your changes because the files will "Fail to validate" and be replaced.
At that time, it will update.
