First, there's no question about it, this is the most fun I've had with Elemental/Fallen Enchantress BY FAR. The pacing feels better, the leveling is FUN, the new monsters are fun to find, the new items, the new spells, the new....everything. It's just a very polished product now that has really won me over.

Most noticeably, however, are the new changes to tactical battles. They're now my favorite part, which is saying something because I used to auto-battle pretty much every single time. I love the new battlefields and I love the new mechanics. I'd like to see more battlefield obstructions, but the ones in place so far are a real delight! I don't like that swarm happens twice with backswing and I'm getting the feeling that as it's implemented now, it's a little OP, but that's something that can be fixed. Other than that, I am only seriously impressed that you've managed to make them so fun. Great job!

I've noticed some bugs, which are to be expected, but I've only had one crash to desktop. Steam auto-sends those, right? I'm curious about the rain and thunder noises, as I've mentioned, but other than that, nothing gets in the way of my playing so far. There's an odd spelling error here and there (that have already been reported), but some of the most annoying bugs from earlier versions are completely gone. Well done.

Are we ever going to see the return of those other two factions? I miss the Umber.

TL;DR You guys have a franchise now. This is a fantastic game and quite frankly, one for the record books. You've finally managed to nail the "one more turn" feel for me and I'm a hard sell. I've been a positive voice here on the forums, even in face of some negativity, but I can finally say that my faith was well placed.

Can I pay for this game again? I would. Just to support your tireless efforts.

I know we still have a couple months of fleshing this thing out, but consider doing another expansion. I will easily pay $30 for another addition to this AAA franchise. Good job, SD. You've come a long way with Elemental. I hope the sales - and the review scores - reflect.

I could not agree with you more.    This is now a great game that I do not want to quit playing.    The best part is the fact that Stardock can do both DLC and other expansions!

Another great effort by Stardock.

Yeah.  Came here essentially to say this pretty much on every point.   New tactical maps are awesome, Leveling system for heroes and cities feel just great.  (the hero leveling UI is a bit confusing at first as it's hard to tell what you can click on and what you can't)

Please please please add the path indicator to tactical battles.. Ive had a couple times where I thought my unit would walk one way but the little rock turned out to block a tile and so my unit moved backwards and tried to go around :-/

Booted it up just to see if it worked... then realized it'd been 4hrs.

Had a couple crashes, but I'm assuming you're getting the dumps automagically.  Also had some times the ui selected option seemed to be out of sync with what was actually selected on the City level up options ..

Great job..

I agree. The updates in LH are a great improvement!

The change to the leveling up mechanic is worth the $20 alone.

I agree.  The game just became a pretty awesome game.  Great work on Stardock's part.  Other than some issues with unit placement in certain battles being awful and the swarm mechanic being a bit unbalanced (though there are some very nice suggestions on this part from players already) the game has really really started to become my go-to game for fun.

Glad to see it's the consensus. All across the boards, pretty much.

I'm going to guess an 85-88 Metacritic. Maybe higher....

I completely agree, the current game is a superior breed to past incarnations. I love the special weapon attacks. Feels a lot more tactical now in combat.. and speaking of combat, the new arenas look amazing, especially the one during an invasion of a town.

All I'd ask for now is a way to place priority on troop positioning in combat. It might be beyond the scope of what Stardock wants for this game, but perhaps in a later installment. One can only hope, and either way, they have done an incredible job with this. I'm looking quite forward to the campaign.

Same same.

I haven't fired up LH yet, but I think Brad has been too hard on himself the entire time. Elemental was not great. But I own every game made by Stardock except for the political machine, and they are all top notch. You can't be great every single time! Besides, I think giving us FE for free more than made up for any misgivings from Elemental and I hate to see so much given away that it ends up hurting Stardock.

At any rate I'm going to purchase LH as a gift for a friend as my way of "buying" the game again. I am more than happy to support a company with such fantastic customer service and obviously care so deeply about their products.

Thanks again!!

KE

Count me too as one more of the legion saying that this beta is AWESOME. Sometimes it's easy to forget it's a beta and think it's a finished product! Congratulations Stardock!

Well, I just played a few turns, regretfully real life has been a bit of a bitch lately, but yeah. Yeah, YEAH, YEAH!!!! this is without a doubt a winner. it feels more fun than FE did, and the champions mechanic feels just right. yeah it was fun exploring the map for them, but most oft than not you'd end up with an opposing faction champ and, well, leaving them alive was bad for business...

I hope this weekend will let me have a better look at the game and make me feel I am the Enchanter of a Kingdom

I think I've already found my favorite thing: Summoning/Necromancy trees + an imp. 18 skeletons + the troops you brought after one round. Sure the ones from the imp are weak, but with swarm even weak troops are useful.

I cannot let go of LH, just one more turn.............

The game is leaps and bounds ahead of Fallen Enchantress. There is always something going on, whether you're busy clearing out the countryside of random mobs or regularly receiving quests to go on adventures. The random quest generation is fun so you don't get bored of it and combined with this and city building there is always something to keep you occupied. The new hero leveling mechanic is just icing on the cake!

The combat maps seem to be new and fresh every time I'm in battle so very happy with this as well and combat mechanics seem to be leaner and more interesting than it used to be.

My only gripe with the game is I cannot seem to get past lvl2 cities because the 30 pop cost on pioneers to build outposts is just killing my growth. I'm stuck with 2 cities while the AI players seem to have 3 or 4 cities all over the map already. Anyway I believe this is being addressed in the next update so we'll see how it goes after then.

I completely agree, this expansion has taken the game to a new level. Who would of thought that changing a few game concepts could make the game so much better.

Thing i like the most are skill trees and heroes through fame.

Tactical battles are definitely better Hording is a cool concept too, early on i was fighting an army of darklings and they horded around my spearmen unit and took it out. In Vanilla this simply wouldn't happen. Only gripe is that cover from ranged attacks isn't really taken into account still

Anyway back to it! Must feed addiction.

P.S is there anyway to setup your troops? Would be cool if you set a formation for your units.

It is amazing how much more polished the game feels with LH. I'll admit that going in I wasn't expecting the new features to make a big difference. Fallen Enchantress is already a fun game so I figured it would be like just about every other add-on. Even after watching the pre-beta video, the expansion looked cool but didn't seem all that different. When you play it however, it is so much more improved. More polished, better immersion, more interesting quests, better combat. All around really great!

I jumped on to make a new thread about most of these points, so I will just add it to this thread instead.

I have uninstalled FE.  Not that it is a bad game, not at all, but because this game is so much better that it is the only one I need.  It is difficult to say exactly why it is so much better, because if I list the fundamental changes, the swarm and tactical changes, the hero leveling changes, the quests...it just isn't describing the new feeling of the game.

OP mentioned pacing, and I think that is a large part of it.  Maybe it is the HUGE map?

I have two very well developed cities (I am soooo happy smaller number of cities is viable now), and my army of one sov plus two units slowly became a large army of 3 heroes (got that quest-based badass with the hammer..the one who CRUSHES you and you hope you survive...) plus two, then three units....

Then I created a new unit that, since they are Kraxis, have the ability to really stand fast in defense, are well armored spearmen that regenerate a HP when they land an attack.  I got a couple of these going, and broke off my quest champion to start a new army stack, and filled it with these created units plus other types of troops.  Recently, I got yet another hero, and have started a third army stack, though this one, since the hero has a -10% unrest, is sitting in my capitol, slowly gaining experience through the adventures guild until I need that stack.

I have the monsters on dense and challenging (+1 level?  maybe 2), so the exploring of the area around my cities is slow, tough, but incredibly rewarding.  Those two stacks are amazingly built up, but not TOO built up.

The pacing of the champion/unit leveling is so perfect.  This is a long game so far, with multiple events across the map, with the eclipse, the one where all known factions declare war on each other, had a plague in my main city and recently a fire storm damaged all the uinits on the map and spawned some fire creatues on the map.  It is like a story of this world is being created.  The plague, of which I chose to quarentine some people, became another two-step quest in its own, and used to be a big even.  but it is now history, with multiple other events, both universe events and the interfighting of the other factions, having become more recent history, and the plaugue just becoming a historical memory.  I can't tell you how much this adds to the game for me.

The ability to choose your heroes' skills by a visible tree allows you to create a plan for what your army will become in the future.  THIS IS HUGE, and I am not sure people quite understand the implication yet.  We're talking, you can choose a path for your hero, then turn around and create units with specific traits and roles that complement or contrast your plan for the hero (go + Army high accuracy in hero, then create a bunch of defensive counter-attacking swordsmen with regen per hit).  The new tactical maps strongly support this.

Speaking of those new tactical maps and starting in each other's jocks, I have groaned and smacked my forehead after moving a unit, then realizing I opened a path for the enemy to swarm a weak or low Hp character, knowing that I effed up and will lose that unit.  So now I actually pay attention to the individual square to which I have to move each unit.  This helps with defense against swarm, redirecting enemy units, setting up a swarm or opening paths for my mounted units to get through their lines to get to the back and take out their archers/casters.  This is amazing!

I LOOK for tactical battles so I can play them out, and I develop each army seperately, with its own unique way of fighting, and will even bring in a certain army to take out a specific toughass enemy unit, because I know the "identity" of the army nearest to it won'[t work well against it (I usually start with a defensive/counter-attacking with ranged army, and an offensive, swarming crazy melee group, usually with a defender hero).  the crazy thing is that the game just sort of sets this up where this feels like the natural way to play.  With Elemental for sure, and less so, but still with FE, I would create these elaborate schemes, but they really didn't matter.  Now you win or lose a tactical battle by your army makeup, which is very much in your control, and your decisions on the battlefield.  Even if you vastly outnumber them, the swarm ability makes it so they could still cost you dearly by taking out, or at least greatly weaking a prized unit (thus making you have to sit around the adventure map healing, or God help you if you get attacked with that weak prized unit).  Tactical battles matter now.  they are tantilizingly close to being their own, whole, game within a game.

Give it a try, huge map with dense, challening, monsters.  I really gives the game a whole new feeling.

Loving LH. My only complain is that while it is billed as a new game it feels more like an improvement on FE. It would have been nice to have some new characters I am sick of the usual suspects. Because visually it is the same it doesn't do justice to the massive improvements that have been accomplished already.

It is leaps and bounds better.

SUGGESTION:

I agree with the 'sameness' of units and factions though, that's holding it back.

Specialised units like the golems for each faction should be a staple.  These can be tied to the race advantages so if you play a race say like Ironeers (aka dwarves, they should be changed to dwarves) you get some mechanical contraption units.  If you're Tarth (aka elves, you might get pegasai, or treants) etc

This is the one thing holding FE back, I still feel that units are all humans.

In addtion Espionage should be introduced, that will take the diplomacy to a whole new level!  Check out the Stardrive espionage system for some inspiration.  Another thing to spend gold on Player choice is a wonderful thing
