What is Legendary Heroes?

It's an expansion for Fallen Enchantress that adds the following:

1. A new Champion progression system.  Instead of random traits your champions have a trait tree that they can use to select traits as they level  up, grow your champions the way you want.

2. The ability to recruit special non-human champions.  Champions aren't just humans anymore.  Rare opportunities or quests may unlock champions of various monster races that can choose traits and use equipment.

3. New tactical combat options.  Swarm gives a bonus for every ally that surrounds the enemy you are attacking.  Be careful where you stand as even weak creatures can become dangerous in groups (especially those with traits that improve their Swarm bonus).  Weapons all have special abilities and every faction has a special ability they can use in combat so even lowly spearmen have 2 special abilities they can use in addition to their normal move and attack options.

4. New monster types like the Banshee who is immune to physical weapons, or the Garagox who knocks enemies back with each hit (which makes it difficult to get swarm bonuses and control the battlefield).

5. New spells and abilities.  New range types have been added that allow for adjacent and line spells and abilities.  Use Wall of Fire in tactical to create a line, 7 tiles long, to block allies from enemy units.  Master necromancy to summon up to nine different skeleton units at once with the Raise Skeletal Horde spell.  Use Resoln's Wraith Touch to drain life from a nearby enemy or Altar's Rush ability to forfeit their attack to get an extra action.

6. A new scenario.  Relias has returned to warn the kingdoms of what he discovered in the East, but there is little time left.  The war has begun.

Who gets Legendary Heroes for free?

If you purchased War of Magic before 10/31/2010 then you will be receiving Legendary Heroes for free.  If you will be receiving Legendary Heroes for free you will receive an email from Stardock when the beta starts.

How much does Legendary Heroes cost?

If you own Fallen Enchantress then Legendary Heroes will cost $19.99.  If you don't own Fallen Enchantress it will cost $39.99.

Can I get Legendary Heroes on Steam?

Legendary Heroes is integrated with Steam.  So everyone that gets it will have it on Steam, no matter where they purchase it from (even if they purchase directly from Stardock).  Those players that will be receiving free copies will be receiving a steam key for the game.

How has the champion system changed?

The biggest change is in how you gain champions.  They are no longer waiting on the map.  Although I liked having them on the map to encourage players to explore, it made the champion part of the game to random.  It also disconnected the champion game from the core game (empire building), creating two separate games that were only loosely connected to each other.

In Legendary Heroes players have a new Fame attribute.  Fame is gained by building certain  improvements (though you can also get it from researching some techs and completing quests).  Completing the Tower of Dominion provides enough Fame to get your first Champion.  When you gain enough Fame 2 champions will present themselves to you for recruitment, but you can only pick one.  All the champions have been redone to make these decisions more distinct and interesting.

With this new system the amount of Champions you have access to depends on your empire choices, what techs you researched and what improvements you built.  Not on map generation.

Champions can still be gained through quests, though these tend to be special cases.

There are also a lot of new champion traits that can be learned.  Some that grant access to new spells and abilities, some that improve existing abilities.  For example all axes give access to the Cleave ability, which allows the unit to strike 3 adjacent enemies that are next to each other.  A champion trait increase the amount of damage done when Cleaving.  Others increase damage with fire spells, or the amount of healing done when casting a Heal spell.  Traits can reduce casting times or increase the amount of accessories a champion can equip.

Monster champions?  Does that mean I can give a bear an axe and enchanted pants?

Each of the monster champions is special, such as Huhrus the Ogre.  You can get him through a quest in both FE and LH.  But in LH he is a champion with the ability to pick traits when he levels (he starts with path of the warrior) and you can give him whatever weapons and accessories you would like.  Since he is an Ogre he gets all their benefits including having more hit points than a normal champion.  But he cannot wear normal armor, so there are pros and cons.

Have the graphics changed?

The graphics of the game have gone through considerable updates.  Redone forests, new rivers, new mountains, dynamic shadows, lower bloom, less terrain blending, improved lighting, better animations, etc.  Ground props have been dramatically reduced and overall the effect is to make the game cleaner and clearer.  It is easier to tell what a specific tile is and which tiles have special things on them.

Legendary Heroes has a new Art Lead, Kay Fedewa.  It is her first time working as a lead on a game and she has done amazing work making everything look both better and more distinct (often opposite goals).

Designer Note: The big lesson for me was that art, much like game design, isn't about one big change or fix.  It's a culmination of a lot of little things working together.  It's the entire scene.  Small things that wouldn't be noticed add up.  Where a player may notice that Legendary heroes has new mountains, those mountains are actually a half dozen changes all working together, none of which would be that significant on their own.

Are there more changes?

Lots of more minor tweaks and improvements.  There is a new game option slider for production pace (so you can modify it seperatly than research pace).  Screens have been added (an army screen for managing multiple stacks in one tile) or improved.  The battles result screen animates your xp bar and dings when a unit hits a level as well as showing any results of injuries or death so we don't need additional popups for it.

When you adjust the world difficulty it will change the levels monsters spawn at instead of just their hit points.  Turn it down to get weaker monsters and up to be facing level 8 bears and worse.

Since you don't have your "free champion" starting by you players start with their sovereign and a group of spearmen and club wielding militia.  In general this makes starting sovereigns a bit more powerful but it does a great job of showing off the new weapons abilities (since the spearmen and militia have different abilities) and it gets the player used to using armies.  He can start fighting with his starting units and by the time they die be ready to get some new ones trained.

We have also added a feature based on player feedback.  The ability to set a city to producing a resource (like additional gold), instead of just having the cities get a bonus when the queue was empty.  This is a more intuitive option for the player and works better for game play since we can seperate idle cities from those that have been intentionally to produce more of a resource.

There are more, new items, new weapons, new armor, new quests, etc.

Does the addition of these new mechanics make the game more complex?

Our goal is to take FE to the next level with the expansion.  To make it into a better game, not a bigger game.  So things that were confusing or overly complex were cut.  For example finding champions in the wilderness can be confusing for new players, the new system is both better designed and more intuitive.

I've also removed cutting/blunt/pierce damage.  The goal of those damage types was to make the weapons different from each other.  To make an axe different than a hammer.  But the majority of players ignored or were unaware of the differences and were left feeling like battles were less strategic because the defense strengths or weaknesses didn't impact their strategy.

Now the weapons have special abilities.  Spears have Impale, which strikes an enemy and the unit behind them.  Axes have Cleave, which can strike 3 units that are all adjacent to the attacker.  Crossbows have been added to the game and they are powerful short range weapons, they strike through 5 enemy units in a line.  Even shields give a Shield Bash ability which does the units normal attack damage and can knock the victim back a tile (which is good for controlling swarm bonuses from your units and your opponents).  Because of these abilities, different weapons feel very different from each other and we no longer needed the stat differences that damage types offered.  In other words, stats differences are okay differentiators, game play differences are better.

I've also cut Influence and Faction Prestige.  Influence fell victim to the go big or go home rule.  It just wasn't important enough to feel like its own thing.  Removing it makes gold more important for diplomacy.  Faction Prestige is being replaced by a Unrest penalty based on the amount of cities in your empire.  The more cities you have the higher your unrest is.  This makes anti-unrest effects more critical as your empire grows and does a better job of balancing large vs small empires since it directly reduces production and research rather than just growth (as faction prestige did).

Part of removing Faction Prestige was the change to have the amount of unused food a city has available impact growth.  So now when you see a tile with high grain yields it isn't just a higher size that the city can grow to, but the speed at which it will reach that size.

Yea, I don't think Denmark has a strongly Jesus endorsed party like our Republicans. So, just assume you're going to hell for living in a nation ruled by the Devil.  Probably true of a lot of European nations, especially those that rely on the secret Devil religion, "Science".  I think I've gotten off topic here...

The new changes sound great except for Steam only.

Paradox has announced that any new games of theirs will require Steam as well so that includes the upcoming Eu4.

Not to mention Civilization 5. *Ugh*

I'll be getting Legendary Heroes for free but I doubt I'll play it due to the Steam demandment.

Pity...

Just a clarification, steam is required for updates but when your playing you don't need steam on. I have absolutely no problem with steam just others will hate on steam (hopefully the case is steam is only required for latest versions and then you can just shut it off).

Great ideas for LH as game, very good! I admire so much the evolution that is taking this game.

But I completely disagree about the choice to make use of Steam OBLIGATORY.

WHY?  Fe is free to be purchased from Stardock site o from Steam.

Why Steam obligatory for LH?  Sometimes I ask myself if steam will not pay cash to the software company to put this restriction.

I no hate Steam. I love Steam and I have a good amount of games with it.

But Steam is no good for some games. Steam is the worst choice for games that want to support modding.

Second point: for example, I downloaded FE 1.00, 1.20 etc. (and I put it in my external hard drive)... with Steam I will be forced each time to download the game again from the network?

I will whenever required to do as a program to make another run.

why an option and choice has become an obligation?

what happened to the old philosophy of Stardock for the rights of consumers who had raised much controversy long ago?

Quoting Rhaegor,

Welcome to modern day gaming.  Adapt or die.

yeah, the cool new era: you have the "freedom" to "choose" the only choice ... there is only one possible choice, but diamines! You are always "free" to make that one choice available...

I have the steam version of Fallen Enchantress. I can start it with Steam NOT started just fine. You don't get the steam overlay but otherwise it starts up without issue. I've heard no mention of steamworks which is geared to multi-player anyways so I'm assuming FE:LH will operate the same way as the steam version of FE.

Hi, I apologize in advance for adding to the barrage of questions.

I love the customization of FE and while I'm in no way capable of designing a mod, I found it very easy to add my own custom champions (up to about 50 now in the Units folder) to the general pool to be recruited along with the official ones. This level of personalization without even the need to enable mods in just... incredible. Will this feature still be implemented in the revamped champion system?

The expansion looks very good and I am quite impatient to get my hands on it. I do have one concern though. While the new method of champion recruitment makes sense, I also think you're removing an exciting aspect of the strategic map: the search for champions which, as has been said, is a great incentive to explore the map in its entirety ASAP, also attacking and killing enemy champions for unique and fun early battles... In other words, the strategic map is being depopulated and nothing seems to replace the departing champions. Suggestions could be endless, maybe adding some new locations (free XP huts, artifact shops, buildings boosting your army's stats for the next battle....) or maybe neutral NPC-like champions we could still interact with or attack at leisure. Just a thought.

Oh and please upload a Lich screenshot as soon as humanely possible

So, by that statement, can I install steam, download the expansion via steam, than remove steam from my computer, than install the expansion and play?

Yes you could but you would have to reinstall and run Steam for every update that comes out. It's not some hidden malware that runs in the background without you knowing, funding terrorism. You can just start it up only when you need it.

The visuals look tons better now, Kay Fedewa has done a great job! Looking forward to trying the expansion out. I like the sound of a lot of the changes, especially cutting down excess features that weren't really working that well.

I really like the direction FE: LH is going. I never like it when gameplay mechanics are locked behind random encounters, so I'm going to much prefer having heroes be recruited through Empire building than having to get lucky and find them somewhere. My only wish would be that you'd go further  on the same path. Finding quests is equally annoying. I wish that instead of the current system, you instead had some elite quests that still spawn randomly on the map somewhere, and then the other ordinary quests just become available in your cities with some regularity. Imo it would greatly improve questing just like FE: LH is going to greatly improve champions.

But, you've probably got your own thoughts on that anyways, so I do have a serious question:

I bought the map pack from Stardock Store (because I got the free copy of FE I couldn't use steam). But when I get FE: LH I'll be switching over to Steam. Will there be a way to migrate the map pack DLC to steam to? It seems a bit of a waste to buy it again.

Hm, looks like some nice changes.

The new hero recruitment system certainly goes into a less random, more decision driven system.

Does the leveling system mean you can pick any of those traits, save for the usual tree prequisites and maybe some specialisation unlocker? That would move it more towards e.g. diablo II which I would enjoy quite a lot. It also appears that there will be a lot more traits, in particular for improving quite specific aspects (extra healing, extra damage from fire spells).

I also feel that the growth change is a step in the right direction. Right now there just is too little penalty for a large empire. So, prestige gets split around? Meh, just construct growth buildings and eventually you will accumulate your population. With FE I just don't see how fewer cities are possibly better than many. Could use a change as announced.

Only, I was not that worried about the weapon effects. The already have different effects now and not only statistical. Bash, counterattack. Ok, ignore armour and initiative variance could be seen as statistical, but still. I felt the decision mattered. But anyhow, I won't oppose more differentiation.

Maybe races could be diversified a bit more. Yes, they have strengths and weaknesses, but there is potential for more I'd say (unique unit traits to chose from, unique techs, buildings, spells, ...)

In a way I was hoping for some more changes on tactical combat, like terrain influence and better integration of cities / city defenses during siege. But some improvements will be made and, frankly, it is already fun. AoW is kind of my reference here in the genre.

After reading many posts in this thread and Stardock forum

Sounds like Steam is the future direction for Stardock -  just like what happen to SOASE: Rebellion.... I guess that maybe continue.

While I'am grateful for a free copy, agreed that FE have not realized its full potential and understand the decision,

mandatory DRM steam will be a no, no for me. - feel like handcuffed , I rather consider paying for Legendary Heroes if it is good enough.

(the reason I pick impulse over steam a well years ago... well seems like things change.)

Thanks anyway for working on it...

With all this anti-Steam lets get the pitchforks out backlash, I just want to say that the people who don't like something are much more likely to be vocal about it than those who like something and have no problem with it.

Steam is a great service and many people, including myself, are happy with it. I purchased FE and am happy to see it fully integrated into Steam. From a support standport I also very much get that it's better to have everyone on one page and that a lot of less technically savvy people will not patch their games unless it's done for them but will still complain when there's a problem when they are on the old versions.

I wanted FE on Steam specifically so I waited until it was available there to buy. I am excited about this expansion and plan to buy it and get in on the bet as soon as it is available.

I just want to make it very clear that while reading these comments makes it seem like every hates Steam and is upset about this move, this is very much NOT the case. I know among a number of my friends will pretty much exclusively buy our games on Steam or get Steamworks games that activate there because it's just so much more convenient to have all our collection in one place and updated for us.

Man, all this hate and love flying around... I think people need to relax and blow off some Steam! Sorry, lame, I know.

For the record no issues with Steam here. Installed it again for SOASE after 10 years or w/e and holy crap, all the old games I had on there from years ago were available for download. I had a library of games on there I completely forgot about.

Everything sounds great to me except for steam. Now granted I haven't used steam in years (like 2006 or 2007 I think), but my last experiences with it were absolutely horrible. It crashed my system often, and it just seemed like malware to me. However, I REALLY love FE, and this expansion seems like it takes it to the next level. I may break down and give steam a chance; however, I am greatly disappointed it has came to this. I would have much preferred just buying it from stardock, but oh well I guess. If nothing else, this has caused me not to preorder it, though I will probably eventually get it.

But What about Frogboy's golden rocket car now that FE-Steam-Keys are handed out to early adopters? *sniff*

Very impressed. Solid list. Much more meat than I expected. You sure E:LH is still not as huge a thing as FE? With what you outlined above alone it might turn into a game I might actually revisit and may be a similar step in terms of gameplay as the jump from E:Wom to E:FE was. Might be easier to actually code. But I gauge the impact to be rally simmilar.
Looking very much forward to stuff like flying, ghost form, invisible, Barbarian throwing weapons, fire/lightning breathing, factions where all normal units have magical ranged attacks and midgets killing dragons with sling-stones and the likes now. If just in mods...

The Hero-chosing Method is even better than I whould have hoped for. Giving the player meaningful choices to invest in makes for good game design.
Hope the Skill trees get enough meaningful variety to not make them de-facto non-chices.

Good Riddance about the Faction Prestige. One of the most cryptic and low-impact features ever, you won't be missed... (also opens up more direct concepts for adjusting growth...). Already got something new neat for the Wildland-Boss trophies?

Only thing I'm a bit sceptical about is the Unrest mechanic. Hope it works out the way you desire. Maybe there is still room for positive incentives for vertical growth or empire-building in General? For a negative incentive I think unrest is actually pretty decent (it mattered to me quite a bit when I last fired up FE a few month ago at 1.1) but whenever I see a negative incentive it makes me sceptical if lots revolves around it...

Steam should elate you alot of the game-management worries while hampering most players very little. (No matter how much I like GOG and actually buying instead of lending my games, Steam's actual features are starting to grow on me recently and I am counting that part of the feature list as a very real perk now.)

One serious question though: What about the Map-DLC features (mostly not the maps but the wildlands-modification and map-options)? Will it continue to be its own entitiy or also be partly/fully de-facto included in E:LH?

Maybe you can even include the Full 2D Experience TM into the mix as an added bonus (see the past, present and future dev journal thread for my suggestion about that)? Pretty please with cherry on top...

Hi All,

I was shocked when I saw that LHs would be free for people who bought WOM prior to 10/2010.

Personally, and maybe others feel the same, I would be happy to pay for expansions/builds after FE...Stardock did a good thing in giving away copies of FE to WOM purchasers, and have proven their integrity.

Maybe one of those "Donate" buttons buried somewhere on Stardock's Web Site would give some people the option to "forgive" Stardock  and reward their integrity ? Or maybe a lifetime discount on all Stardock releases? {ok ok I won't get greedy }

Quick question:

Is this 1.3? Or a separate direction?

Will I be able to have a Fallen Enchantress 1.3 & a Legendary Heroes version to choose from, or once LHs is installed I basically have to use the New rules?

Or will this mean FE 1.2 is as far as that game will be developed, and future enhancments will be based on LH builds?

thx.
