It's a long-standing bug which would probably be pretty easy to fix, so I hope they do so relatively soon.
Relatively low priority too probably. One of my first few games got shafted when research finished the same turn as spell of making was cast, stuck on ledger screen couldn't leave it. Annoying but infrequent bug, easy to work around. Similar to this issue. If the game prompted you to pick research as soon, but before you gained bonus research I guess that could be OK.
It would be nice if there was a site where we could log all the of the bugs for the devs to get to eventually. (An Example of the one used for Dwarf Fortress, which probably has as many bugs as it does features... Probably more
