Fallen Enchantress Nexus Launched

Hi guys,

We've been talking about this topic over in another thread but I wanted to start a new one to formally announce the launch of Fallen Enchantress Nexus. I also want to say a big thank you to those mod authors who have already uploaded their mods to the site. You guys were really quick! Very impressive.

I've tried to add categories that make sense based on the types of mods I've seen so far. There's a "Miscellaneous" category to catch any mods that don't fit in to a specific category, but if you think that I need to add or change the categories around then please let me know. Obviously, ideally, the less mods we have in the Miscellaneous category the better.

Any problems, any feedback, or if you need anything from me, just let me know.

Release news from the site

I am happy to announce the release of a new Nexus site in to our modding network. Fallen Enchantress Nexus is now open with a number of community made modifications already available.

For those of you who don’t know (and I shamefully didn’t know until quite recently!), Fallen Enchantress is developed by Stardock of Galactic Civilizations and Sins of a Solar Empire fame. It’s a turn-based fantasy strategy RPG. Imagine Civilization strategy meets Heroes of Might and Magic levelling and combat and you’ll have a good idea of what this game is like. Frankly, Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic are two of my favourite games and it’s likely I’ve sunk more time in to them than any of the Elder Scrolls or Fallout games, so when a Nexus member emailed me at the start of the week wondering if a Nexus site might be possible for Fallen Enchantress I was quite disappointed I’d never heard of it before. Having now played it for coming on 10 hours over the past few days I can safely say I really enjoy it, so I jumped on the official forums and got in contact with Stardock honcho “Frogboy” about the possibility of creating a Nexus site for the game. The idea was received well, so now we’re here.

Stardock are one of those developers who have always supported their modding communities well. Fallen Enchantress is no different and it has multiple different tools packaged in to the game itself for you to use and share with others. On top of that they have an established and experienced community of modders for their games which makes Fallen Enchantress and the Nexus a perfect fit. If you’re like me and have never heard of Fallen Enchantress then you can find out more information from the official site. The game retails for $39.99 (£24.99), so it’s not a bank buster either, and it retails on multiple sites including Steam.

I want to thank all the mod authors who have already uploaded their mods to Fallen Enchantress Nexus and I’m hoping we can work together to make the modding scene for Fallen Enchantress as big as possible.

Suddenly, the mod community gets a celebrity visit

I've still not looked at mods for FE yet. I'm not certain if i will. I've always been a huge supporter, and at times, developer, of mods. I cut my teeth doing art for FFH ^^ But i'd like to see how FE turns out first.

In my experience, modding, for me at least, has always been the port of call to turn to when the official developers have all but abandoned a game. A good game, which didn't quite hit it's potential.

With stardock and kael at the helm, i'm thinking, maybe hoping, that FE will do just that. To reach the dizzying heights it so richly deserves. That will require constant developer attention, and probably lots of dlc and expansion packs.

If it becomes a beacon for the ages, like civilisation IV. Or if it becomes clear that it never will, but the mod community is booming. Then in either of those circumstances, i may take an interest in mods. And by that i mean contributing to projects. I have a lot of personal hopes riding on this game.

I think that will depend on the mod. For my mods just extract the files into your documents\my games\fallenenchantress\mods folder and run the game with mods enabled. I've tried to make each of my mods to be modular.

Or busy... or not very tech-savvy .

It can be daunting for a person new to modding to go mucking about in various folders or do a .exe modifier string thingy .

Or just do not want to mess up their vanilla installation, or just do not have the knowledge to actually unpack the mod, let alone to do something more complex.

I recent this, because I just installed Stormworld (awesome, by the way) and while she was watching me, my wife commented "Hah, it's a .rar file, want me to unpack it on mine, I'm booted in linux?"

She is neither stupid nor lazy (I don't know what your education is, Nanako, but chances are, you are not teaching in one of the ton ten liberal arts colleges in the world) but she did not know that 7z handles .rar files just fine. And I know that she would not want to install a new application on her laptop just to unpack and install a mod.

There are people who can appreciate a good mod, but are kept away by technical issues that daunt them. An elitist attitude is not helpful.

What would be helpful is Stardock making it so that installing a mod and keeping mods separate as easy as it in Fallout or Mount&Blade, and modders taking the extra time to make installation easy for everyone.

All mods require knowing where to dump the files. Some require more than that. I get your frustration, but no one is forcing you to play their mod, and it's all their effort, being provided for free. So you probably should put up with the shit you'll face for 5 minutes spent per mod while you're installing, in order to have all the enjoyment afterwards.

But if you don't want to, that's your choice.

I have been retooling as of late, but I'll get my DL's set up on Nexus soon. Very happy to see my mod in the same company as such genius modders as the ones from Fallout:NV. Warzone is essentially what inspired my mod for FE.

i don't know... i thought civ 5 mod thing was pretty good. (in terms of ease to use anyway).. then again it's all done in steam.

i mean... if FE has some sort of standard on how people pack their mod downloads, it would be useful. then stick in an interface for "installing" and loading mods. obviously... they can't do a browse job like you can in steam.

you would think the key is to attract the more casual audience.

Lol they do not know you very well do they Darkone, you would think the name was a give away.
Still you would make a great character in FE, Darkone of the empire... lol.

FE is a game of heros and champions, ironic really that a champion of modders rights comes face to face with a website owner who one stepped on my modders rights. This should be interesting...

I've supported modding in E:FE from the start, but what one person can do with min. effort can save 'thousands' that same amount of effort. If a modder wanted only themselves to play then why would they upload in the first place. Yes I"m stupid & lazy, soon to be 'busy' and still not very tech savvy - but there be alot of casual pc gamers that would love to play what those that have spent so much time making that might shy away from the 'big unkown'. There is a lot of grey between those that know not how to turn on a computer & those that know how to program them, I simply wish that all are able to play the game at it's best!

I agree. I'm not as "vetriolic" as you are towards the game, but, faults or not, the nexus is a big thing. It can make a HUGE difference.

Nexus also has a lot of trollish baggage that kills the fun for those modders who use it.

Many modders simply do not trust Nexus because of how Darkone and his staff treated them over the years. So it may be a big thing for players, but its not very good news for modders. Modders are the ones that Nexus steps on when they have a monopoly. The irony is Darkone used to talk about the evils of a monopoly on the official Dragon Age site when EA took a very anti fan site approach. What he said was right, but it was Darkone that said it. A guy that seriously abused his monopoly for Oblivion and other games prior to Skyrim getting Steam Workshop support.

Effectively breaking Darkones Monopoly and forcing him to play nicely.

I found it all rather amusing to be honest since I no longer use nexus nor am I affected by it.

Speaking a 7 time winner of the nexus mod of the month award for oblivion, what should have been a happy successful time for me was a complete and utter nightmare on Nexus. The more successful you are, the worse it gets.

Does the fact the two sites you blacklist on your site, the Nexus and the official Bethesda forums, prove that we're evil people all out to get you, or does it prove you're just someone who doesn't play well with others unless you get it all your own way. Hmm? You went and did the right thing, you made your own site where you can get away with doing whatever you want, and you stuck to it. Great for you. I've enjoyed going there every now and again over the years to read up on how the Nexus is going to be destroyed by <insert new gaming practise or community site here>, but your mindless rants on the topic wear thin after a while.

We host mods for over 29,000 mod authors. Realistically speaking we're not going to be perfect for everyone. Statistically speaking if even 0.5% of those mod authors don't like the service, that's 145 disgruntled mod authors. But I know for a fact that most mod authors are more than happy with the service we provide, and a small minority aren't. That's all right, not everyone is going to like it. But talk of a monopoly is just daft. If a mod author doesn't like the Nexus they can just upload it to ModDB, release it on their own site (like you do) or use a service like File Front, dropbox or similar. There's plenty of alternatives available.

I get it; you don't like the Nexus, you feel like you were wronged 3 years ago and everyone is to blame except yourself. That's fine. But kindly keep your cross-site trolling out of these threads and keep it to your site blogs if you still feel the need to be bitter about it.

Wow, that trolling leaked onto our site pretty quick. Not knowing the situation, I would have to say that I really don't care, except in as much as this trolling has now invaded one of my favorite forums. Giskarduk, go away. No one believes you. You sound like a crazed troll drunk on Trog's Blood. This is an Epic Fantasy 4x TBS site. Anyone who is a fan of this game has an above average intelligence. At least enough to see a troll for when it comes stumbling by. It took a long time to rid this site of trolls and I don't take kindly to new ones popping up for the mere opportunity to complain about some other site.

I think what I have to say about Nexus is valid to the FE community since you expect them to upload mods to Nexus. After all, if your going to trust a site with your hard work, you want to know it is safe. Well I do...

You gave control over my entire mod collection to a team I had never even heard of without pming me once about it first. That it was a MISTAKE. One I could have forgiven had you apologised and put the mods back in to my account as I asked.

But you did not do that did you.

You decided the correct response was to moderate me, ban my mods and cover the whole thing up with that 2 account rule, using an old corrupt TESsource account of mine YOU TOLD ME you had deleted years earlier as an excuse for doing it all.

You did that in front of 1000s of my mod users that saw you do it, many of which are still on my website today and still remember it.

So that was not mistake Darkone, that was a deliberate act and a serious breach of trust that modders like me placed in you and your website.

Even if I give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you have turned over a new leaf, your site still has serious troll issues and modders still complain about it to me on a regular basis. Any FE modder wanting to use nexus should head over there and look at mods for various games and see the sort of comments other modders get and decide for them selves if they want to be part of that before uploading a single file.

I have had my say now, I think is reasonable to stop at this point.
