Lay of the Land on Turn 1 (3/3/2 founding tile):

This will be my first attempt at telling a story via the Skeleton King's diary... please be merciful, lol.

Spring 159 AC

This broken world reflects my existence. Body destroyed and then bound together again with dark magics. World destroyed and held together by the magic of the shards. Sin and despair in these bare bones, misery and chaos throughout the land. Though I am told I was the Fifth Patriarch, I do not apparently share the same desires. Alive? Dead? I am neither yet I am both. The mortals of this place, who despise me for what I am, will not share the world. Fine - I will take it. And all will bend and be reformed in my own image.

Great endings have small beginnings. The center of my power, Golgotterath, was founded today. Commanded the skeleton workers to create a logging camp and our researchers to focus in the area of workshops. Conquering this place means using the resources available - my legacy begins now. Exploration is of utmost importance.

Fall 159 AC

Today was found my first vassal - Warmaster Skrymir. An interesting creature from the race of Frost Giants. As I explored east through the plains he hailed me to join his camp on the outskirt of a swamp, completely unafraid of my glowing eyes and rickety bones. In a rumbling and deep voice he asked, "Are you weak or strong?" I answered, "I am neither yet I am both." With a loud guffaw, Skrymir clapped me on the back and offered his services under one condition - any Frost Giants are his and his alone, especially any in leadership. Not one to pry as to reasons, I agreed... if he becomes troublesome I'll deal with him. Until then, I have a partner in crime.

Winter 159 AC

My travels north across the vast plains surrounding Golgotterath led me to a hostile flying creature known as a Venusian Archer. Immune to lightning, this insectoid appears to react quickly to threats. If I could only bend him and others of the same ilk to my will... no matter, I will leave him be for now. He does not know yet, but he will submit or perish.

The immediate area includes an air shard and some wild game. Both resources are needed to expand my power. Furthemore, the area to the northeast appears adequate to support another settlement. Duly noted.

Summer 161 AC - Turn 10

Fp 4. Centaurs highest with 11. Sights set on next settlement to the northeast, building a pioneer. Immediate area relatively calm. Researching training to procure spearmen. 3rd settlement area to the west. Things look promising. Explore and expansion phase. Save.

Warmaster Skrymir has drawn up a plan to skin a bear cub to the northeast. I think I may join him. At the edge of the bear's territory lies an ideal spot to found our 2nd settlement. There is no negotiation, only the dialect of cold steel will he understand. An extremely prestigious location is also located nearby that might increase my influence. There are no serious threats to my hegemony as of yet - will that last? No matter, I welcome the challenge. Gotta break a few live eggs to make an undead omelette.

Winter 161 AC

These mindless brutes are no match for my wits or braun especially when blinded. Good riddance to the foul beast - the area is now clear to expand.

Spring 162 AC

Our 2nd settlement is now founded which I named Rhoacien. Plenty of lumber, a prestigious location, and a calm surrounding area. Must shift my attention west to the 3rd potential settlement and pay my little flying friend a visit along the way... the power of an air shard works wonders on a stiff back.

Winter 163 AC - Turn 20

FP 7. Highest are the Elves at 18. After founding the 2nd city swung west to clear the mob around the air shard. Cleared it with no problems. Two mite armies decided to encroach and attack both the Skeleton King and Warmaster Skrymir - Skrymir squashed them with his giant feet. Finished researching mounted warfare, the King is now mounted. Skrymir, being a Giant, cannot ride normal horses. Researching leatherworking to equip sov and champ with armor. Capital making a scout to find and recruit additional champions. 2nd settlement focusing on production buildings.

"Your plans are taking shape quite nicely, my skinny little friend" bellowed Warmaster Skrymir. "Yes, as intended" I replied. "I need you to head south and look for the roaming wolves. Determine where they are coming from. I'm going to head northwest and scout the area for our 3rd settlement. There also appear to be a few inns up that way. Stay on task, Skrymir, and we'll reap the spoils together. I suspect others are out there consolidating power - report immediately if you see or hear anything."

Spring 164 AC

I need minions, many minions. The forests to the west and southwest of Golgotterath are chock full of bears, spiders, wolves, and giant cats. Too many things to juggle, not enough hands. The walking dead shall populate the land... sheer terror of their numbers will paralyze all enemies. I'm beginning to thirst for power, a craving I cannot get out of my mind.

Summer 164 AC

My travels north of Golgotterath, beyond the range of hills, led me to a pair of Humble Inns. I entered the first... the glare of the lanterns and candles, the raucous laughter, all proverbially got under my skin. Patrons shied away and began to whisper, some left, while one maniacally looked my way, eyes darting to the left and the right. I approached and the man motioned me to sit. The crazy look in his eyes, the wild gray hair in disarray, attracted my interest. "Tell me of your need, wildman, and I may decide to assist. Or I may decide to kill you." He proceeded to tell me he was a merchant and that a band of darklings, led by Brunthus the Tenebrous, had taken over his shop. He was desperate, and with proper deference, promised a magical shield for my aid. Very well. I will kill Brunthus, take the shield, and if it suits my fancy let the fearful merchant live... or die. After all, I need minions...

Fall 164 AC

Outside the second inn, while tying up my horse, I overheard an aged man in fine livery speaking with a rather beautiful female specimen. "Daughter, this business trip has become too dangerous. The area has marauding bands of mites and butchermen lurking about. You must, and will, return to the safety of our estate. You will find travel with this escort while I finalize family business." Off in the distance, a human knight in shining plate armor was saddling his horse and readying another for travel. I approached the father and daughter, and with the swinging motion of my weapon arm, said "this is not the escort you are looking for, move along, move along. I will escort your daughter back to your estate." With a confused look in his eyes, the man agreed and promised a magical bow in return. Ahh, it feels good being an evil me.

Winter 164 AC

My scouts tell me of an ancient keep, with a river of blood flowing into, and not out of the rusted gates. Can this be true? What kind of power wills into existence an entire river of blood? Where does all this blood come from and where is it going? Regardless, this keep is near my next bastion of power. The secrets will be mine and I will evolve them. I can feed the pool with the blood of the recently alive and keep the bones as animated minions. Glorious!

Turn 30 - FP 10. Highest are the Shadows at 26. Things are going quite well. Settleable area to the west near the river of blood and just located another far to the east near a cave bear. Both sov and champ are decked out in leather with some rusty pieces supplementing the sov. Just completed the escort quest, killed a bear and black widow. Have one supplementary bone spearmen now. And I'll be damned if the sov's glowing eyes just don't look completely bitchin' inside a rusty helm. Next 10 turns focused on continued exploration and expansion. No factions yet found. Save.

Summer 166 AC

I did not want to let the beauty go back to the estate but increasing my influence in the area was a practical choice. There's more fish in the sea, or bones in the graveyard as they say. Packs of rabid wolves roam the countryside, threatening my minions. They will be dealt with once and for all. Further exploration needed down south, areas to control to the east and west. Plenty of choices, nothing on the horizon that can challenge my hegemony. My legacy is being written, plenty of pages left in the book of the Skeleton King. My will be done.

Fall 166 AC

After exploring the nearby bear cave we headed southwest and stumbled across a pavillion. Outside, practicing various forms of swordplay, was a righteouos looking Amarian. We approached, and he pointed his weapon at my chest. He yelled, "You are death. I am Irwan and represent life. Begone now, or feel my wrath!" With a slight turn of my head towards Warmaster Skrymir, I nodded towards Irwan and replied "I welcome you as a minion. Drain his blood, Skrymir." And we attacked. The righteous devil was tougher than he appeared. Skrymir narrowly avoided a grievous wound while I suffered scrapes and bruises. No pain, no gain.

Summer 168 AC

Two important events this season. First, I founded our 3rd settlement named Erauwa near the River of Blood. The localized production will make it much more efficient to skin and drain the life of my enemies and in turn, animate my minions. Second, my scouts report Lochean has sent settlers to the southeast and is encroaching into my domain. The metallic fool had the nerve to threaten me - I responded with kind words, but in time he shall bow like all others. We traded some learnings together but I can already sense this relationship will lead to war sooner rather than later. I may be in a position of weakness, but so is the spider before it attacks... he thinks he is a contender, all I see is a pretender.

Turn 40 - FP 15. Greenskin is highest at 38. Minor setback in the west - lost a scout unit trying to sneak past a band of ophidians. Golem pioneer unit in southeast looking to settle, trying to intercept with scout unit and keep from settling. Almost have pioneer unit ready to found 4th city far to the west, and another ready to settle to the east (but there is a cave bear needing culling). Plenty of $$ available to finance an army or pay wages to further champs - unfortunately none found thus far. Things look stable. Save.

Winter 168 AC

I find the new settlement of Erauwa... pleasureable. The blood tainted trees, the ancient keep, the crimson liquid flowing over my bones. There is a power here, a force, that both itches and scratches. It's at the same time euphoric and miserable - what is it doing to me? Up north there is a section of bedrock which looks useable somehow. What secrets lie there? My attention will turn but I must first rid the area of these nuisance life forms.

Summer 169 AC

Centaurs, a cross-breed of man and horses it seems. Vini sent an emissary, obviously knowing that I exist. Polite words all around in our initial dialogue. Where does he hail from? I sense Vini and Lochean might be open to manipulation... yes, warfare between the two would be a good start. Keep them busy while I continue consolidating power. Not yet ready to turn my attention militarily...

I decided to personally visit Brunthus at the workshop. Was optimistic there could be some dialogue - a darkling like Brunthus could prove valuable. Unfortunately, Brunthus and his gang rushed, thinking me a weak target. I'll enjoy placing his body into Erauwa's blood draining and bone cleaning machinery. The fool. Have a nice new shield out of this. There are some mites scurrying around, maybe they will listen?

Tunr 5- FP 18. Highest are the Greenskin at 63. Founded 4th settlement. Have 3-4 more possible spots, still in expansion mode. Lost a bone spearmen unit to miscalculating a blinded ogre... that club hurts. North and northwest area of empire now pacified. Continued expansion via new settlement spots and outposts to make the empire contiguous. Turning attention to the south and east. Save.

Summer 171 AC

Stupid minions. My first real creations ground into dust by that brutish ogre. He was blinded, and could not see, swinging that damn club around. Was it my mistake for not directing them out of harm's way? No, it was their fault for being weak. I made them strong and they failed me. Well, there's plenty of them bones... the next ones will be smarter.

Surprisingly, the Golems appear, at least on the surface, to be on good terms. As well as the Centaurs. Good, I still have things to do before they get my attention. They don't want my attention.

Summer 172 AC

My travels south have been quite uneventful. Ruffians and brigands take notice of a lone traveler until they see me eyes.. and then retreat. I did come across a worthy adversary located in an isolated tower out the outskirts of a vast forest. A sign out front named the location as belonging to Soliag the Undefeated. Always looking for new vassals, I approached and multiple henchmen, whom call themselves, Chosen, barred the way. "Approach no further, walking dead. You are not welcome here." Deciding discretion was the better part of valor, I replied "very well, we shall meet again."

Soliag the Undefeated and Chosen:

The lands to the east contained a welcome surprise - a creature called a Fiery Gorgon, located in an area with a dark cave and molten magma. There were multiple gorgons, along with an Ignys. Without my Frost Giant vassal or bone spearmen, I reluctantly bypassed the area but made note for a future visit. I'll be back.

Fall 172 AC

My scouts report Lochean founded an outpost far to the southeast near a prime settleable spot. Ordinarily I wouldn't care but his actions have disturbed a Forest Drake, whom is now wandering the land. This does not bode well for the new location. May need to adjust my plans - this drake is too powerful at the moment. Ahh, no matter, my dominion is inevitable. I am immortal thus time is neutral.

Turn 60 - FP 18. Highest are Greenskin at 75. Continuing expansion to south and east. A number of tougher mobs out there that need clearing to make settlement less risky. All available slots are at risk for immediate attack from a mob or with a single zoc expansion, force lair mobs to start wandering. Not yet ready for that. Have all 4 cities building bone spearmen to supplement both sov and champs, as well as increase FP. Save.

Winter 173 AC

It's been 15 years... where has the time gone? My power is spreading, bringing MY order to this land. There are others doing the same, true, but they cannot match me. War will come soon, whether I start it or not. Must ready my horde of minions...

This loose forest drake must be dealt with. I can blind him, haste our forces, but he is still formidable. Need a settlement down here, for roads, for more production, a buffer against the Golems and Centaurs. I see indication of another race in forest garb although we have not yet made contact. Events are starting to escalate. The next 15 years will not look like the first.

Spring 174 AC

A magma river discovered, reforging old into new. I feel a kinship with this location. The river of blood fed life into my bones. But this... this place is the heat of creation post-destruction, like me. It is too far from my seat of power to stay long but I will have this as mine alone.

Confronted an elven settler party. I let them be - no need to be hasty.
