Faction Diversity Thread.
Hello,
I’m a long time lurker and I thought I would throw some ideas about diversifying the factions.
Currently, I feel that Tarth, Pariden, Resoln, Magnar, and Ythril, are lacking a little bit in flavor so I thought I would add some ideas I’ve had to make them interesting. I’ve also included ideas for Umber and Capitar, if they’re chosen to be put in the game.
Take them or leave them!
Tarth-
Vision: Wild Rebels who specialize in Guerilla Warfare
Unique Unit: Guerilla
A Guerilla is a militia unit who fights with the Tarth when the Tarth engage offensively! They are armed either with a melee weapon or a bow and are one step above militia but one step below regular troops. In addition, when enemies invade Tarth territory, Guerillas may spontaneously attack the enemy; nothing serious, but distinctly taxing. Wolverines!
Pariden:
Vision: Spell Casters and Intellectuals of the Old Guard
Unique Unit: Not sure what to do on that one!
Resoln
Vision: Spectral warriors of the Shadow World
Unique Unit: Wraiths
Unique Unit: Assassins
I think it would be cool for Resoln to have the ability to recruit fallen soldiers (both your own and your enemies) with reduced stats with mana. It would give the feel of a force that is beyond this world by turning the spirits of your enemy against them. This would also encourage a strategy of slaying high profile units in an attempt to “recruit” new units in your army.
Additionally, I would have Assassin units that specialize in killing units individually as an attempt to encourage gameplay which would reward sneakiness.
Magnar
Vision: The Evil Empire
Unique Unit: Slaves
Unique Buildings: Gladiator pits (instead of growth buildings)
I really think it would be badass to train slaves as combat practice for your champions and your units so that they could level up faster. I know, I know, sounds immoral, and might take some tweaking to make it balanced, but I think that using your population as a means to level fits right in with Fall From Heaven! : -P
Hell, if you wanted to be really creative, you could choose the amount of slaves that are fought in the arena, and if the slaves win, they become gladiators and they level too! I’m Spartacus!
(For even greater hell, perhaps MONSTERS could be in the Rings and THEY could become Gladiators.)
Umber
Vision: My precious horde…
Unique Unit: Marauder!
I would love the idea of a “snowballing” horde. Basically, Umber would automatically generate Marauders, free basic soldiers, that would grow based upon the level of growth in a town. They would be distinct from the military and could be controlled in battle but not on the map. Instead, these Marauders, would accumulate over time until they reached a point, in which they will attack the nearest city closest to them and cause general mayhem. Since they are a neutral force (“Don’t look at us, their just misunderstood refugees), although I think a befitting diplomatic penalty would be in order!
Capitar
Vision: Money makes strange bedfellows
Unique Unit: Merchant
For Capitar, I would add the ability for Capitar to bribe the land rather then conquer the land; similar to how French traders would get along with Native Americans in Civilization: Colonization. When attack a neutral unit, the player can be given the choice to bribe the unit into fighting for them through exchanging culture and coin rather than steel swords. Their unique unit could be a merchant that is deployed in an area, and if there are intelligent neutral monsters within that same area, they could eventually become “Domesticated” and new distinct mobs (separate from the “original mob”) could join the faction of Capitar. So you would have Trolls, Bandits, and Darklings (Perhaps more powerfully developed), that would join the faction, and allow them to supplement the armies.
I would encourage you to share your thoughts on Faction Diversity as well!!!! The more ideas the better chance we have of coming up with a good one!
