Fallen Enchantress Beta 4 is still a couple weeks away.  But I thought I’d share a brief game play example.

It was Summer

The black sorcerer had been wandering for some time…

image

The world was healing from its wounds but was now dominated by monsters, demons, and men who would prey on the defenseless.

He didn’t know what specific event finally made him decide to take a stand. Travelers slaughtered on the plains by bandits? A helpless proto-village overrun by dire bears? Ultimately, it did not matter. What mattered was that Macros had taken a stand and with it, civilization would return to these parts…

Essence

Most of the land remained inhospitable for life. But Macros had scouted far and wide and had at last come to a river basin.

image

Here he found a land that would support crops, production and most importantly to the warlock, retained trace remnants of essence from the fallen Titans of old.  This essence would serve as a means for him to perfect his arts.

image

With the construction of Athica,  people began to immediately migrate to the city. The little village meant hope, opportunity and most importantly, safety. It was rumored that Macros the Black was a powerful sorcerer. A warlock. He would protect them.

image

The first order of business was to begin exploring and expanding the resources available to the village. To this end, Macros put out a call for a pioneer.

Aera, who had just arrived, volunteered. Macros escorted her to a place he had seen during his travels.

image

With the outpost completed, the Kingdom of Athica’s influence now reached a rich metal deposit and one of the powerful magical shards, rooted to the earth itself.

image

The capital city of Athica was very busing constructing the shard shrine, iron mine and a tower of dominion (designed to act as a beacon to bring people to the village faster).

Inslow

That Fall, Macros met Inslow. While not fond of battle, he was well liked by the village.  Inslow was a friendly but most importantly, he was trustworthy. To that end, Macros put him in town to act as its mayor while he continued to explore the area.

image

The area, like most of the world, was filled with danger. Macros, however, was not defenseless.

image

His spell book contained many enchantments that had made him a force to be reckoned with in the wilds. Now, as the leader of a growing kingdom, he would use this might to clear away the dangers and make it safe for his people to expand.

Progress

image

Before the cataclysm, civilization had mastered technologies such as metallurgy, crop rotation, arcane arts and much more.  But with 99% of the population wiped out, few specialists remained. What did remain, however was lore. Soon, sages began to recover this lost knowledge. Each recovered technology might only take a few months to put into place.

The War

The Kingdom of Tarth had come from the north without warning.  Rather than pursuing a policy of open conquest, they instead aggressively constructed outposts throughout the land. Outposts that Macros quickly captured and turned to the purposes of Altar.

image

This proved to be a mistake. Lady Irane had already made good use of her time with those resources and had amassed a potent, focused, force.

image

To save the capital, Macros traveled by road and into the city.

Irane…was not impressed.

image

image

Soon, all that was left was the capital. With a huge enemy army laying siege.

image

The end returns to the beginning…

image

With all his forces destroyed, his towns conquered, his allies dispersed, Macros finds himself alone.

image

As daylight drains from his vision, his last sight is Irane pointing her mighty bow at his head.

Maybe…he shouldn’t have started a war after all.

Agreed the spellbook looks terrific.

Think I'm going to like the automatic north south orientation also.

Please please please fix that font-from-the-80's before actual release. The game has plenty of good, some bad, but having oversized non-AA'd badly designed fontblast from the past is the only thing that I just can't handle in a modern game. After looking at the texts of the screenshots I had to actually go outside and breath some fresh air. Fffrggffr.

Wow, you got issues if the font is you're most concern.  As long as it's readable who cares?

At first I thought the same thing but if you look closely at the UI text it kind of hurts my eyes to read it. It would be nice if it was improved.

I do like all the UI improvements I spotted, such as the new Research completed screen and the new spellbook design.

I could say: I care. It might not be much; yet again having a proper font in a game isn't a big change but it does make a big difference on the look'n'feel of the game, just like it makes a big difference in a look'n'feel of this post.  Just imagine it with the ingame font. You'd probably just skip it.

Font matters not, only the beef around it: http://meme-meme.org/post/20625616804/comic-sans?

It has always confused me why an outpost has a greater ZoC than your newly built city.

A lot of good images, A lot of good progress, some good, some (old progress actually) not too good yet.

Bads:
As you notice on the 1st pic of the original post, there is trouble with the visuals on the bracers
Also as vesa2 say, try playing around with other fonds, will be interesting to see if this helps brighten up the UI even more!

Goods:
You improved the interface in the spellbook! I like!
You have improved the popup when researching a technology, this is amazing work (I hope the pic topleft is moving, if not its still nice)
You improved the icon images of certain (or all of the) starting abilites, and meaby all pickable abilities, gonna look much clearer now.

These improvements in the looks look really fantastic, getting better I hope to see alot of gameplay upgrades too since I cant see much of that from screenshots
And yes I felt like pointing out these things Deal with it

Edit: Oh something struck me, meaby you should make the "Font" edit-able in the game, so one can pick between a few fonts or include his own into the game, that would be a nice little thing
Hm, think im too excited in my life... then again.. cant be too excited

Sincerely
~ Kongdej

I think the serif fonts used on the buttons and headings look fine so maybe something like that would make the rest of the text look a little more consistent?

Everything else looks great, btw.

Macros the Black was a powerful sorcerer

Maybe…he shouldn’t have started a war after all.

Oh No!  If only he had Tomas and Pug to help him lol.  When I was a wee lad the Riftwar saga was a favorite of mine as well.

I think Text Justification would matter more than the chosen font. Un-justified text looks somewhat amateurish.

There's a reason why publications of all kinds use justified text.

I too like the spellbook

I LOVE the new UI changes, and am blown away by the potential of this game considering that this is still in BETA stage, and that there will be at least two more rounds of impovements (Beta 5 and Final) before the end product is released (not to mention post-launch upgrades, patches and extensions, and of course mods ) !!!

Frogboy and the rest of the team - please keep up the great work, and we may have a candidate for best Fantasy strategy game ever ...

Frogboy I have two questions that arise from your narration in the Original Post:

1. You mention that your Wizard placed Winslow in the city to act as its Mayor - does that mean that there are now formal Mayor / Governor assignments ?

2. What is that blue diamond-shaped icon in the first pic (create sovereign screen?)

Many thanks,

Bendiwolf

Ah yes! Finally a beta 4 AAR. Thanks a lot , great read as usual and some very nice screenshots showing off lots of new stuff. And as others pointed out already, great UI changes with the biggest plus being the spellbook, but I must say the icons look way better too.

Is the target for release still August 16?

My guess is "Attunement"

Looked good, always love the updates.  I wondered a bit about the war, and why Tarth won.  Was it just a lucky start vs unlucky start situation and then a bad judgement to dec war?  Was it that Tarth had totally invested in war based techs vs more civ techs by Frogboy?  Just curious since an early loss like that seems like the player should still have made bad decisions to lose, but the AAR seems a bit more like Tarth was just overpowering vs the player in the beginning.

Otherwise, things are looking a lot more polished; I'm hoping for an AAR long enough to hear how the city changes and economic tweaks play out.  The ability for random spawns to message the player also seemed like an interesting idea that would really open up some more of the role playing side of things.  I didn't notice the font.

Depends on the difficulty, honestly it looked like frog tried to make this game a story "pre-written" in his mind.
Still shows alot of interesting stuff compared to a "short game", and is really nice of him to put it up here (And I absolutely like the story telling part)
