Good Morning all

So, in another recent thread I began thinking about my top 5 games. It's turned into a top 10, but I broke it back into top 5 (Dos) and top 5 (windows).

Out of curiosity and fun, I welcome opinions as to what your top 5's are.

I'll start:

Top 5 Vintage (Dos Age)

Tie Fighter
Master of Magic
Privateer
Betrayal at Krondor
Torment - Planescape

Top 5 Modern (Windows Age)

Dragon Age
Never Winter Nights
Knights of the Old Republic
Civilization IV
Starcraft

I'm not sure how far back "vintage" goes.  But I will list some of my favorite all time.  Console and PC.

Vintage:

Alpha Centuari

Planescape Torment

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Brigandine

Final Fantasy Tactics

Newer:

Fallout 3 & NV (yes I liked them better than the old ones)

Morrowind & Skyrim (I liked Oblivion, but not enough to list)

Dragon Age: Origins (2 disappointed me in gameplay, I didn't mind other often made complaints)

Knights of the Old Republic 1&2 (I liked TOR at first, but got old really quick)

Mount & Blade: Warband (like crack, I can't get enough of this game)

Also in no order!

Civ IV w/ BtS. The way pollution was handled knocked the earlier iterations out.

Heroes of Might & Magic III

X-Com (and append X-Com TftD to it, I guess)

Everquest

Might & Magic VI

Vintage: (also no particular order)

Master of Magic

XCOM: UFO Defense

Fallout 1 & 2

Thief 1 & 2

For vintage, I'd like to give an honorary mention for two Spectrum titles:

Reberstar Raiders

Lords of Midnight

Other than that, pretty much the games you've all mentioned already

Lords of midnight.  I wasted a good whole year on that game.  I know you can still play it on the midnight engine but I wish they would do a good remake of it.

Vampire:Bloodlines

Civ IV

Madden 07

Master of Magic

Master of Orion II

I chose these simply on how much time I spent playing and the replayability of these games. I have only ever played two RPGs more than once, which was fall out 3 las vegas and vampire:bloodlines. However I played bloodlines through with each clan at least once and some of them twice.

Civ IV was just the best of the series. Mechanics, map generation, balance, etc. Civ V has better graphics, but that's simply due to advancement in real world technology.

No one has come close to Master of magic. I'm hoping E:FE will be close, but i doubt it.

Same as for MoM is MoO II.

Madden 07(on the PC) My guess is most poeple would say you need to have some interest in American football to enjoy, but I disagree. The ability to draft new players year after year, the variety of plays you can call, the way the players graphically respond to things on the field, the coaching/player stats you have to pay attention to, subbing players, making your own plays etc etc. Its simply a well done game with tons of replayability and things to do.

Vampire: Bloodlines is also one of my all time favorites, hard to have left it off my list.  That and Arcanum...shit all the Troika games could be on my list.

Hmmm, considering I have been around since before the beginning, this is going to b a hard list.

Elite (Commodore 64)

Battlesquadron and Hybris (Amiga)

Populous II tied with Power Monger(Amiga)

So many great Amiga games to chose from like the original Battle Isle and History Line 1914-1918, Wing, SDI, Syndicate, etc. Hard choice.

Windows Based

Silent Storm (PC)

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident (PC)

Just Cause 2 (PC/PS3/360)

Heavy Rain (PS3)

Joan D' Arc (PSP)

yes, I listed a PSP game. Wonderful story, fun battles and a shocker at the end of the game when you read the real history.

Quoting Lord Xia,
Vampire: Bloodlines is also one of my all time favorites, hard to have left it off my list.  That and Arcanum...shit all the Troika games could be on my list.

Yeah, Arcanum was pretty freaking awesome. Fallout with more divergent playstyles via the tech/magic mechanic.

Also, you could fuck a sheep.  Not enough games offer that.

At first I thought Arcanum was amazing, but after a while I stopped caring and never finished. I guess it was too much fantasy. Not that I'm against fantasy, but the steam punk part was great the magic and so forth was kinda irritating.

I was never much for console games once I got a computer, but I wanted to mention Symphony of the Night(Castlevania game) and Master of Monsters I and II. I played them a lot and really enjoyed them. However, I tried Master of Monsters II about 4 months ago after not playing it for over a decade and was bored quickly. Shrug.

I'm going to cheat and combine some pairs in a series into one entry:
  • Star Control 2
  • X-Com/X-Com:TftD
  • Civilization
  • X-Wing/TIE Fighter
  • Master of Magic
  • Master of Orion/Master of Orion 2
  • System Shock 2

Yes, most of them are old.  But so am I.

In no particular order:

Vintage:

  • Total Annihilation
  • Star Control 2
  • X-Com
  • Master of Orion 2
  • Civilization 2

More Modern:

  • World of Warcraft
  • Civilization 4: BTS
  • Neverwinter Nights
  • Dragon Age 1
  • Half-life 2 (I can't believe this isn't mentioned yet!)
  • Either Morrowind or Skyrim... Skyrim is the better game, but Morrowind holds a special place in my memories for a bunch of reasons.

BG 1 and 2 transcend vintage vs. modern.  Best series ever in my mind with BG2 topping every game made yet.
