I finally got my wife to try this game out! She's not a strategy gamer, but she loves 'personalizing' within the games she plays if she can. (Never seen anyone spend so much time in Spore's creature creator, lol). So, naturally, the first thing she wanted to do after the tutorial, before reading any of the bios, was create her own Sovereign.

She went though, probably spent a good half hour carefully going through, reading, and selecting all the traits and such that she wanted, and then noticed something that would turn out to be diabolical in consequence.

She decided to go through and decide on a new race/faction. She browsed through them, randomly selecting one after another.... *poof!* *Bang!* *pow!*

With each click, she unwittingly was overriding all the custom data she'd entered!! -- she was, needless to say, pretty pissed upon this discovery. I was too, honestly.

That this is even a possibility seems to be a terrible oversight! I understand that so much (and soon, much more!) will be determined by your base faction, so much in fact, that by switching factions it makes sense that you'd have to start over.

But there's nothing to prevent, or even warn the user that their time will have been lost if they change this one (and to a noob: seemingly trivial) characteristic.

Suggestion:

-- When creating a new sov, perhaps have the user create the sov in steps? Or at least a first window where you choose race/faction? It could display useful information like faction-specific units/traits/abilities/buildings as you click or highlight a picture representative of each race/faction. And then after this step, then the user can be free to go willy-nilly!

In other words, restrict actions into a linear path that affords a user only actions / consequences that are desirable. Data-wipeage not being desirable (unless of course, this was indicated as being desired by a user by, for instance, clicking a "start-over" button)

(This, of course, this setback has not prevented her from succumbing to my plan to get her hooked to FE! )

Probably don't want her playing the beta then. Of course this will be fixed by release. Of course the devs know about it. Of course, this is a beta.

I agree with the OP.  And it's not a "of course" it will be fixed thing, nothing is.  Unless we point out that something is a problem, they will not see it.  And even if they see it, they may not bother with it unless we make a big stink, and then it's iffy.

+1 (yea, I agree with a post that agree's with another post!)

Hey, she got over it and loves it, and honestly I think her kind of experience is a very important one to pay close attention to. We all bring to the table various assumptions in our experience of these Beta releases, her's happen to be very different than many of our's in the forums. (i.e. Not a strategy gamer and being a female, lol)

And thank you @Lord Xia. Percisely my thoughts!

Agreed. I can't tell you how many games I have beta tested over the years when people have said the same thing and the devs did not fix the issues. And some games the issue lasted years into the game.

I meant my comment to point out that is had already been reported. Reporting the same thing over and over may get it done faster, but I doubt it.

It would be valuable to see what a female casual gamer thinks of the game. But the first thing I explain to new players is the nature of a beta and how little the game is finished. Hope you explained that too.

Customization overwriting has always been there. At any point in time you select an item that covers the same area as an item already worn then it removes the old item. As in, if you pick out clothes, then select a robe, all your previous clothing choices are gone.

But that doesn't mean there should be a little box that helps preventing your whole created hero be deleted..

Unfortunately, unless a compiled list of known issues is made available (feel free to point me in that direction if there is indeed one), you're going to see issues reported multiple times.  It isn't necessarily reasonable to expect everybody to read through 20+ pages of forum posts to make sure their issue is actually "new" before posting it.

It's also kind of silly to use "It's a beta, there are going to be problems" as an argument against posting about said problems when that is in fact the purpose of beta testing.

Yeah, please keep posting about issues you have. SD will sort it through.
