Hi, everyone! I have installed the game a couple of days ago, and started playing it.
As I was playing it for the first time, without any preconceptions, I’ve written down all the user interface things that threw me for a loop. Hopefully, this would provide a good indication of a first-time player’s perspective.
Apologies if any of these are already known or fixed, or if something is existing but I have overlooked (in which case, I’d be glad to hear what I missed).
Anyway, here are the notes I made during my first hour with the game:
- Right-clicking on a notification (“build a shard here now!”) does not remove it from the screen. Instead it moves my currently selected unit to the spot hidden by the notification.
- Why do I get notifications for building shards when I do not have the technology to do so? Can the notification be “we have a shard in our borders but cannot build anything until we get shard harvesting”? Can we also have another notification when we do research the technology to harvest shards (maybe it already exists?).
- No auto-save is created at the beginning of the game. This is something I’d expect to happen.
- Using the arrow keys for up, down, left, right seems to move my selected champion. In strategy games, I think the appropriate action is to move the screen. Could this be an option somewhere?
- No option to confirm the settling of the city – Yes\No. With no way to see the yields except by hovering over the “settle” button, it’s very easy to accidentally click and build a city when hovering over
- Can we also have a shortcut to show yields on each tile (i.e. Civ4’s Ctrl+Y equivalent)?
- There is no option to change the name of the capital city – if I’m going to rename any city, it would be the capital.
- In Spell Description window, there’s “Is Resistible:”; this looks weird – perhaps could be renamed as “Resisted: Yes\No”?
- For each spell that the player has access to, it would be nice to be able to see a reminder of what granted that spell, so the player can appreciate that, e.g. selecting Earth Disciple was worth it, for the next game they play.
- Could there be a list of all traits available for my heroes somewhere? I’d like to go somewhere and see that if I had Intelligence 12, my sovereign could pick up trait X, so I can take the Int-increasing trait now, planning ahead. Or that I should not worry about not seeing any magical traits in the list – I simply need to level up to level Y, and they’ll be waiting for me.
- Could there be a way to see which traits are enabled by which technologies? I’d like to know that if I were to pick up technology “Haggling For Biscuits”, then my sovereign would have a chance of picking up the trait “Merchant 2” the next time they level.
- In tactical combat, when hovering over an enemy, it’d be good to see not just the amount of damage my unit would do, but also the chances and the damage that the opposing unit would do with their basic attack as well. This helps the player grasp their chances of victory.
- I’ve turned on the HUD’s for treasure, and the stationed monsters, and mines, as I’m getting overwhelmed by the terrain and the features. However, neither my armies, nor wandering monsters get an HUD. It’d be really nice for them to have it, and for the wandering monsters to have a different icon from the lair-based ones, as they are more dangerous to the exploring units.
- For each terrain type, it would be good to have information on movement cost, as it caught me off-guard that some tiles which I expected to have movement cost of 1 had a movement cost of 2 instead. This can be added to the window with terrain name in the upper right corner.
- I went to the unit designer and found that I could create conscript pioneers and scouts, which are half as cheap as the starting pioneers and scouts in terms of time to build. Since the unit description suggests that pioneers and scouts are light units, and presumably will be killed by anything, is there any reason for me not to use conscript versions all the time? Perhaps “conscripts” trait should be enabled by an early technology? For example, the first military squad technology?
- I have met an Assassin Demon in their lair, and the game allowed me to rename them. Is that intentional?
