This isn't another "OMG, nerf maul" thread. This is a short discussion on what it means to be mauled, how that is represented in FE, and how I think it should be represented.
Okay, so when I think of "maul" outside of the game I think of giant hammers and being crushed by them with one powerful hit... Seems obvious enough since that's the definition. I do not think of being hit multiple times in rapid succession (which is how the ability currently works)... Especially when being mauled by a bear.
My suggestion... I would like to see Maul changed so it works like this: "Attack a foe for extra damage. The foe is knocked down unless he or she saves."
I would personally like to see Maul add damage based on the strength of the attacker (+300% strength modifier?) so that it is more effective on strong characters / monsters, but I won't get into balance issues because those can be worked through with testing. My main point is that maul should be a single, powerful attack with potential knockdown.
So, what do we do with the current mechanics for Maul (i.e., multiple possible attacks at reduced accuracy)? I would rename it "Frenzy" or "Blood Rage" or something like that and give it to weapons and NPCs that we think attack furiously and without regard for their personal safety (e.g., dire badgers, werewolves, death demons, or Janusk
).
