imageIt was on December 26th that Fallen Enchantress reached a place where I wanted to play it (over playing SWTOR) rather than having to play it.  This is something that never occurred for me in War of Magic (it was always “must work on this”). And in fact, the last time I got to that point was with Dark Avatar (Galactic Civilizations II series).

I must admit, one of the things I’m enjoying the most is how easy it is to mod and tweak things.  You think having access to the source code means you have full control. That’s nonsense. Pouring through millions of lines of code to find out what determines say how fast a unit swings in tactical battles is non trivial.  By contrast, in FE, all that kind of stuff is in XML so I could speed up everything to suit my preferences (which I hope will become the default because I prefer fun speed animations over “realistic” speed animation).

Another area of fun has been tactical battles. Because they were so terrible to start with (imo) I get to see big improvements with relatively little effort.  For example, units would get focused on their initial target no matter what. I fixed that with 1 line of code.  The AI not using spells in combat was caused by a rand()% design rather than a calculation on what the best move would be. I’m a very lazy person so I prefer to hand things off to the machines to tell me what should be done rather than trying to hard code it (i.e. feed a function all the conditions you think are relevant, have it crunch it and come back with what it should do).  As a result, tactical battles are much better already even if they still need a ton of work AI-wise.

That said, for NON-Brads of the world, assume this game will suck and make you get a horrible disease rand()%DiseaseTypes.size();

That's good to hear. Looking forward to the beta, I just wish it was available during my vacation, not when work starts again. On the bright side, I'll have a reason to call in sick on occasion.

"wanting to play" and feeling I need to "play a game because I invested too much time into it to quit" are all too common in games I play today. As I get older, I just have less and less time to play. I can only imagine how precious my free time will be after my wife gives birth to our first child in a couple of months. Last night I deleted Fallout Tactics from my computer because I had gotten to a point in the game where I realized that I had made bad choices, even though I thought I had made good choices, and the game just stopped being fun in a sort of really lame way.

Point is, I'm looking forward to Fallen Enchantress. If nothing else, I've already loved how you guys care about your games, and that you are gracefully handling the transition from WoM to FE. Looking forward to having something FUN to play.

Great! Thanks much for your continuous updates! Most things are looking great (except in my own minority opinion immortal heroes...)!

Your caveat ("assume this game will suck"), with its echoes of your E:WOM-beta caveats ("the game is in a state which will give you ulcers"), is starting to be wearisome. Stop being coquette. You don't mean it, and you shouldn't, so stop saying it. Even if it turns out to be true (G-d forbid), it won't help you. Merry X-mas and Happy Chanukah!

The AI not using spells in combat was caused by a rand()% design

Obviously you should have used (int)((rand() / (MAX_RAND + 1.0)) * max_val)...

Quoting ,

Can someone please check on Brad?  I'm afraid he's succumbed to the disease that all who play EFE will succumb to.

It seems the character in the screenshot is standing on top of a mountain. Interesting...

Glad the game is addicting. Sounds like it will be infectious too.

I am guessing that the character was placed on the mountain artificially, Dev Magic, to produce the screenshot for the desired effect.

Don't listen to Xia; he's lost all his sense of wonder since they didn't include his pwnies.

I'm hoping it's a spell or a Champion ability that lets him scale the mountain.

No, it's the "Climb Every Mountain" global enchantment.

Causes all other Sovs to go climb a mountain, leaving their kingdoms wide open to your armies.
