Can't start game - nothing is selectable in title screen

Hi Everyone,

I have bought Elemental War of Magic 1.3 yesterday and have installed it twice since then but I cannot start a game.

Elemental starts and after a while the title screen shows up in which you are supposed to select "New Game" or "Options". But I cannot select anything.

Maybe it has something to do with dxscreen files. Debug.err file says many of the dxscreen files couldn't parsed because of wrong size.

I would upload my debug.err file but I don't know how to do it in this forum.

Has anyone a clue how I could solve my problem starting a game?

Try shift-rightclicking elemental in impulse, and select verify installation. It will run for a while. If it says update needed after that, run it.

Thanks a lot for your answer.

 

It take me a while to figure out what's the problem. It happens because of a setting in prefs.ini.

If I use

Fullscreen=0

than all title screen objects cannot be parsed correctly.

 

But if I use

Fullscreen=1

and delete the screens folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic

than it works and I can select all objects in title screen.

 

But it don't work only to delete the screens-folder. 

 

The bug is reproducable on my computer.

Not totally sure but that sounds like a configuration issue.  Are the resolution settings the same as your monitor resolution?

Hi,

I have the same problem. I can log in and even chat window works but I can't to anything in game menu. I purchased the game yesterday as digital download so I have the newest version of game. My computer is very much up to date and I'm using the newest catalyst drivers. I verified the installation and even registered the game. I checked that prefs.ini and looks like everything is correct there. I'm using resolution 1920x1080 and I have 4 GPUs.

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and link the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.

The file can be found in My Documents\My Games\Elemental

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug log will be erased and recreated for the new session.

Try clearing out your C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic\Screens folder if you haven't--it looks like many of your screens are corrupted.

This is actually the newest version of WoM and is working as intended.  Many of the features of WoM did not work correctly and as such, have been removed to let shine what is still great about the game, the start up screen.  Now, if you are not enjoying this game or feel that a start up screen doesn't actually constitute as a game, it's not because it's "bad", as there is no such thing as a "bad" game, there are only games you like and don't like.  And if you don't like the WoM start up screen game, then this game simply isn't for you.

Lord Xia, the newest version of WoM is working like intended? The start menu do not work at all. Honestly I didn't expect that. I strongly agree this game is not for me if I can't even start the game. Yes, sure. Let it shine but sure I want my money back if I can't even play. And I think if I pay 30 euros for that I only can watch the broken start menu, that is bad game.

 

Kryo, I cleared the folder you asked, but those menu items in title screen aren't still selectable.

Ah ok, no harm done. My english isn't very good so I can't find difference between sarcasm and straightforward.

Anyway I'm still waiting for a reply from the Stardock technical support. I send them an email a few days ago and asked help but it seems they have ignored me. I removed the game and reinstalled it but I still have the same problem. I hope Impulse can refund my purchase. It seems this game is broken.

I sincerely hope you give the new game, Fallen Enchantress, a try if you can't get War of Magic to work. I am really surprised that their support guys haven't responded. They are usually very prompt. Maybe the new one will work on your rig.

Yes I did receive the automatic response email. I sent the ticket to the support center 4 days ago.

I build a new computer during the last weekend and now the game works fine. I can see the rest of the game menu and I can finally start the new game. I do not have any ideas what was wrong with my old X58-based system but I changed CPU, motherboard and memory modules. Maybe there was an incompatibility issue or maybe the crossfire profiles were corrupted... or maybe I just had bad luck. Thank you for the help everyone!
