Ok, so the idea behind this mod is to make each faction unique. Right now, it is focusing on the 5 normal armor sets which are gained through the warfare tech tree. Weapons are also being assigned slightly different numbers. Not necessarily to balance, per se, but to have certain factions use other weapons (instead of, for instance, all factions end up using the war staff, as it has an attack of 15). The highest attack value will still be 15, however, which weapon has the attack value of 15 will vary depending on the faction.

Note: This mod hides the core factions, and sovereigns. If you don't want to hide them (for instance you are running a mod which modifies the core factions/sovereigns), you can delete the two files in the core DF folder (DF_HideCoreFactions.xml, and DF_HideCoreSovereigns.xml).

The mod is available here: http://www.wincustomize.com/explore/elemental_war_of_magic/31/

Woah... nice. You may want to consider putting a shirt on them as well (in the vanilla armors, those are the ones that have attachmenttype skinned).

Yeah, I wanted to blow through the actual armor sets. That took quite a while to get them all up there. I'll probably go through the shirts at some later point.

I need some input now on how I should assign all the armor. Anyone?...Bueller?

EDIT: I put up shots of Relias, Markinn, and Karavox to complete to Sovs. They have their default sets right now. I kind of like how Karavox looks already, just thinking of giving him a mace instead (that's magnar's staff!). Not sure what to do with Markinn, I kind of like him as is, but I think he could use something else. I like the robe, so I can't put any torso armor on him. And relias...again, not sure what to do with him. Could leave him, maybe add some vambrances? I'm not sure about the club either. Nothing says all powerful leader of a faction of people like a gnarled club!

EDIT2: I changed Karavox's weapon to a cool looking sword instead.

Lord Xia, I'm looking at you. I've seen you complain that all the factions look the same a lot. Here's your chance to decide how they should look.

Ok, the Sovereigns are mostly done, minus a few tweaks here and there. And Lady Irane ... the bow fits so well with her (the quiver and all), but the problem is, it's not unique. It's the same shortbow you equip your troops with. At least the dagger is unique (although too tiny to really tell).

BTW, if you'd like to see a certain set, let me know, and I'll build it so we can get a screenshot of it. For instance, a kingdom Tier I set: leather chest a, with shoulder b, vambraces from c, thighs from a, greaves b, whatever. If you'd like to see a certain combination together, let me know.

Ok, so I finished the Sovereigns for now. I've uploaded v0.1 to wincustomize (the OP has the link).

Right now, the sovs have a unique modeltype so that no one else can use their armor set. It's also as a set. Which upgrades as you upgrade your armor tech. This way, you can keep the appearance the same, and get better stats. This will probably change in the future so that people can mix and match and do whatever they want later. Also, the weapons do not upgrade as of yet.

I like this idea alot. The only things is, do you pay for the upgrades to armor? I can see things getting out of hand there. You know we can keep this original image on the cards and still give them new armor. This is my usual method of giving them helmets without making them all shiny robots.

I would also like to hint at maybe making one race use only leather based armor. It could be upgraded just the same, but would keep that endearing texture alive throughout the game. It could be:

Padded => Leather => Studded Leather => Wargskin => Ogreskin => Dragonskin

The idea would be to not need metal for armor, freeing resources for other uses. It would require alot of gold and materials, but would not cause a dodge penalty and even increase dodge to allow some nifty unit combinations. Also, you could choose a different race and come to this one for their legendary Dragonscale Shields.

As for which race to have this armor, I would say Tarth are my first thought. They seem more rogue like than any other. I also think bows should be a focus of theirs and maybe even advanced staves to pull the whole thing off.

How difficult would it be to change some of the models to get leather to look different? i.e. color changes and adding studs.

I was thinking about something similar to that for Tarth, however, there aren't enough different leather types. BUT, if you are good with graphic manipulation, they can be made to look different (look at the heavy vs rusty). It takes some patience, as the graphic files for these are broken up (one image contains every piece of the set).

My idea for this was to use only in game assets. I suppose you could use the warg, ogre, and dragon skins on leather, the image would have to be manipulated to look right though.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the metal color on most of the armor can be set. Look at the color of the blade that Carrodus has to get an idea.

Thanks, murteas, I hope you enjoy it.

Now, a question for everyone. Would you like the armor to be split in pieces like it is now? (for capitar for instance, you would get a chest piece which is the chain shirt and shoulder guards, the thigh guards, and the greaves as seperate pieces) Or would you prefer to just have it all be one set like how the Sovs are in the mod right now?

EDIT: Also changed 1st level pariden's cloth arming shirt to a blue shade to match the faction's color. I also gave Markinn a different axe that I think fits a little bit better.

EDIT2: Modified K Arming Chain Shirt so the leather is purple for Capitar. I will continue to try to keep the faction colors in each set at least somewhat. I think the color will help to make things look less dull.

Version 0.2 Uploaded

- Created seperate tech tree for each of the 5 kingdoms (all techs are the same except for the armor/weapons tree)

- Created seperate folder for each race

- Created first tier of armor for each of the 5 kingdoms

- Added in second tier armor set for Altar

I wanted to get this out there. Just a note... not to worry...you can continue to play on beyond the first tier armor, it will give you the default stuff. I'll be working on the fallen tier 1 next. Then, it gets easier to do the rest,...well..the xml part of it. Still have to design a crap load more.

Let me know what you think.

*Note - Check all the above pics for how it looks.

impinc, instead of creating their own tech tree, is it not possible simply to add the new armor to the current tech tree and then give the core units new modeltypes? That's the approach I used for most expandedfactions. The only drawback is that each armorpiece will be listed multiple times when researching.

Also, another possible work-around to keep the mod compatible with updated weapons - when you get to the weapon techs, you don't actually need to unlock every item for that tech from the core tech directly (such as you do in df_coreweapons.xml). Instead, you can simply have the tech itself contain a gamemodifier to unlock the standard tech. That's how I made sure the elves, who required a unique tech tree, didn't need their own usable weapon definitions. However, for the elves, I still included weapons that could never be used so the player would visually see in the tech tree what he was researching.

Regarding the tech tree, I wanted the interface to be cleaner. Now that I have most of the leg work done, it's not so bad.

Regarding weapons, the plan is to give each faction unique weapons as well. Hence, just copy/pasting the current set and unlocking them.

I'll be adding the UW abilities in a bit. Probably after I've gotten the Empire races started.

I know it seems like a lot, and it was, but it's putting the effort in now, so I can just hit it piece by piece fairly easily for the rest of the way.

Depending on how this goes, and how much people input, it may turn into different tech trees for each faction. Right now, things are the same, just with the different armor sets. Once the visual stuff is done (armor, then weapons), we'll see where we're at, and how we can really make each faction unique with it's own feel.

Looks great Impinc. I know your focus is Armor but one Unique feature I don't think has been exploited yet is Shields. Even the Bow Weilders could carry one on their back. Is there even a Shield Skin file? Wintersong has created a total boat load of Crests that would transfer over with ease I suppose.

A very nice mod. This will really help liven up the visual aspect of combat and troop production. All units looking the same always bugged me to no end. Makes combat really boring... I really like how unique the factions are looking.

You probably have a good reason but since you seem to want input their are two small things that bug me. They are how Paridan tier 1 uses basically all leather and the chainmail for Capitar tier 1. They seem to advanced for tier 1 and out of place. For Paridan why did you use leather and not padded? Instead of chainmail you could use the noble surcoat even though it is being used by Lord Relias. Also their are hats that could substitute for helmets, like the Fezz and Flat Cap.
